When was the last time you were late and expected someone to understand? How about the time you left your dishes on the table for someone else to clean up? Or perhaps you left the lid on the peanut butter jar loose, and the person after you opened the jar to find it dry and not fresh.

Often, we are eager to ignore our own faults. But we have higher standards when it comes to our expectations of someone else who has the same expectations. We need to as equally understand the weaknesses of others and excuse them just as we excuse ourselves.

Two of my strengths are punctuality(準時) and organization. I like to meet deadlines when they are due and keep the space around my computer neat and orderly. But sometimes things happen, and I slip from being perfect. When this happens, I show myself mercy and lower the standard for myself. However, if someone else makes a mess around my computer, I might not show them as much mercy as I show myself. If it can happen to me, then I should be willing to realize that it can happen to someone else as well.

I am not suggesting that we should not work on improving our faults, or that it should be right to be late or leave a mess behind us. Although we should always be working towards self-improvement, we shouldn’t have a double standard that says we are excused from our own mistakes but we cannot excuse someone else. If we are not 100-percent perfect, we shouldn’t expect others to be.

Mercy shows an understanding heart. If we are blind to our own faults, we will not be very merciful towards others. Showing a little mercy goes a long way when life’s little mistakes take place. When the tables are turned, showing mercy towards someone’s shortcomings could cause us to receive some in return.

1.From the first paragraph we can learn that________________.

A. we all make a mess sometimes

B. we all need private space

C. we should accept others’ help with gratitude

D. we should not open the lid on the peanut butter jar

2.How does the author develop the third paragraph?

A. By raising questions.                                           B. By giving examples.

C. By analyzing opinions.                                         D. By showing research findings

3.The underlined part,       “When the tables are turned” in the last paragraph, can be best replaced by____________.

A. “When good luck comes”                                  B. “When benefits increase”

C. “When our mistakes happen”                           D. “When the situation is changed”

4.What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Changing Bad Daily Habits                                  B. Excusing Our Own Faults

C. Being Merciful Toward Others                          D. Working Toward Self-improvement

Section D

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions and complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

An addiction(癮)is an activity or substance we are eager to experience repeatedly, and for which we are willing if necessary to pay a price. Common addictions involve alcohol, cigarettes, food, drugs, gambling, etc. This article discusses the concepts which can be helpful in coping with addictive behavior.

Relatively minor addictions, such as watching too much television, or lying in bed on weekend mornings, are often not even considered addictions, because the price paid for engaging in them is not high. On the other hand, we tend to use the term “addict” to describe the person who, at least in the eyes of others, continues to be addicted in a behavior long after it has become clear that the substantial price being paid was not worth the benefit. The individual who has lost career, house, family and friends because of cocaine (可卡因) use, but is unwilling to consider stopping is an unfortunate example.

Negative addictions range from those with very minor negative consequences, to those as serious as the cocaine addict just mentioned, with much area in between. Although it is not necessarily true that a negative addiction grows stronger over time, yet a constant level of addictive behavior (e.g., overspending $ 200 a week ) can lead to an increasing level of negative consequences.

You may be surprised to learn that addictions can also be considered positive. Positive addictions are those in which the benefits outweigh the price. A common example would be the habit of regular exercise. The price of membership in a gym, the time involved and any clothing expense is outweighed by the benefits of better health, energy, self-confidence and appearance. As with negative addictions, positive addictions may not get stronger over time, and there is a broad range of how much benefit is actually obtained.

What is common to both positive and negative addictions is the urge to engage in the addictive behavior, and the satisfaction that is felt when the urge is acted upon. The urge is a state of tension and expectation that is experienced uncomfortably as a desire for the substance or activity. Because we experience relief when the urge is acted upon, there is an increased likelihood that we will act on the urge again.

82.We use the term “addict” to describe a person when he or she goes on _______________even

When asked such a question: Which is better, to get scores or to get abilities, many students' answer like mine would be that to get abilities is better than to get scores. To make it clear, we have to compare the both sides.

Two different aims lead to two different methods and two different results. If we are eager to get good marks, our teachers would take a cramming-duck hand to force us to do much hard work. We have to learn by heart a lot of lifeless knowledge. We have to recite many many poems and texts. We have to carry a heavy school-bag. We have to do much homework after school. All of what we do is merely for a single purpose----to pass examinations. As a result we cannot enjoy anything. We have no free time. We have no holidays. We have no games and plays. We have no pleasure. We have no childhood. In the end, we have no skills or abilities except some dead knowledge from books. We are not able to wash our clothes. We are not able to cook meals. We are not able to labour in the fields. We are not able to operate machines in the factories. In a word, we cannot do any practical work.

On the other hand, if we intend to gain abilities, our teachers will take flexible and varied measures in their teaching practice. They will provide for all the students chances to share equal education and we students are supposed to enjoy all-round development. While we learn knowledge from books, we are showed how to use computers, how to make a radio or recorder, how to make experiments and researches in sciences; how to play the piano or violin, how to sing or dance, how to draw or paint pictures and portraits; how to prepare a dish or how to make bread; how to plant trees and grass, how to go in for farming by means of scientific methods; how to do business and how to keep in touch with others. All in all, we can play an active part in our studies. At last we will master not only book knowledge, but also the other three abilities----living ability, working ability and manageable ability. Thus, we will serve the people better.

By comparing the two ideas, we can come to a close that the purpose to get scores is far worse than the aim to get various abilities. Only when we know well both scientific knowledge and practical skills, can we live happily and work wonderfully in the society in the coming future.
