The Juniper Institute for Young Writers （JIYW） offers high school students a unique opportunity to participate in intensive creative writing workshops，craft sessions，and studio courses designed especially for young writers．We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting online applications for the 2017session!
Eligibility （資格）
The Juniper Institute for Young Writers welcomes high school students．We operate on a rolling admissions basis，and we do our best to make admission decisions within 6weeks of receiving applications．Once your application is accepted，enrollment in the JIYW is guaranteed on a first-come，first-served basis．
Application Process Overview
Applications are accepted online．The application deadline is March 2，2017．Early application is encouraged，as admission is competitive and the program fills quickly!Application materials include：30applicationfeeawritingsample/apersonalstatement．ApplicationFeeAnon-refundableapplicationfeeof30is required with each application．Applicants pay the fee by debit or credit card through a secure site on the online application．
A Writing Sample
The writing sample should be 5-7 pages of fiction．Please include your name & email address as a header or footer in the writing sample．
A Personal Statement
This statement of no more than 300 words should describe your interest in the Juniper Institute for Young Writers．Please explain why this would be a meaningful opportunity for you and what you think you can contribute to the institute．
Tuition & Housing
Tuition of﹩1，350 includes all institute activities （workshops，craft sessions，studio courses and field trips）．You will need to pay a 200 non-refundable tuition deposit in order to guarantee your space．Remaining tuition is due in full no later than May 15，2017．
The cost of housing is﹩216 for a shared room in our residence hall．Participants may choose to stay elsewhere off campus，but the immersive （沉浸式） nature of the program and residence life curriculum encourages on-campus residence．

    Top quality instruction is provided by distinguished members of the AU Confucius Institute faculty who are experienced teachers，fluent in both English and Chinese．
Who Can Attend？
    This week-long，day camp is for students aged 7-16 who wish to participate in a fun，dynamic summer experience in Chinese language and culture．For classes，students will be divided into younger and older age groups．
Schedule
    Students must arrived at the Confucius Institute each day by 9：00 a．m．a(chǎn)nd must be picked up at 3：30 p．m．Morning lessons will focus on Chinese language classes，while afternoons will be filled with hands-on cultural activities．Instructors will bring students to the Powell Campus Center dining hall for a supervised，cafeteria-style lunch each day．

Cancellation （取消）Policy
    Full refunds（退款）will be made for cancellations received by 3：30 p．m．on July 22，2014．We cannot make refunds to students who cancel after July 22 because the amount of materials purchased，meal counts and classroom spaces are based upon the number of students expected and cannot be changed after that time．

2．People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions--and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why．
    Rachael Jack，University of Glasgow researcher，said that rather than scanning evenly（均勻的） across a face as Westerners do．Easterners fix their attention on the eyes．
"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions，"Jack said．"Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure，whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect （忽略） the mouth．"
    According to Jack and her colleagues，the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed．As a result，facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations．
    The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories：happy，sad，surprised，fearful，disgusted，angry，or neutral．They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies．
    It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners，"The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions，"Jack said．"Our data suggests that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion，Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less．"
    In short，the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion．From here on，examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion．Otherwise，when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures，Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation．

1．Did you know that the first documented use of OMG（oh my god）was in 1917，or that LOL was once a common term meaning little old ladies in 1960？That's what the world learned when OMG，LOL，and FYI （for your information） were added to the Oxford English Dictionary last week．This dictionary is considered by many to be the reference book that defines the English language．
Words added to the Oxford English Dictionary are truly considered new members of the language．People invent new words all the time，but only a few become popular enough to get defined in dictionaries．

One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit，but in fact，they accepted his new look．He swam freely and got along with others well，although he was the only penguin with a black stomach．
