From my second grade on, there was one event I feared every year: the piano recital(獨(dú)奏演唱會(huì)). A recital I had to practice a boring piece of music and perform before strangers. Each year I would ask my father if I could skip the recital “just this once”. And each year he would shake his head, saying something about building and working toward a goal.
One recent Sunday I stood in church, video camera in hand, and my 68-year-old father play the piano in his very first recital.
My father had longed to play music since childhood, but his family was poor and couldn’t lessons. He could have gone on regretting it, too many of us do. But he wasn’t stuck in the past. When he retired three years ago, he his church music director to take him as .
For a moment after my father sat down at the keyboard, he stared down at his fingers. Has he forgotten the ? I worried. But then came the beautiful melody (旋律). And I he had been doing what music teachers always stress: the notes and pretend the others aren’t there.
“I’m of him for starting something new at his age,” I said to my son Jeff.
“Yeah, and doing it so ,” Jeff added.
With his first recital, my father taught me more about self-confidence and the life goal than all the words he used those 30-plus years ago.

What would Barbie look like if she were average?
According to US artist Nickolay Lamm, she would be a brunette with a rounded face and a much thicker waist.
Frustrated with the unrealistic beauty standards of Barbie and her friends, Lamm took data from Disease Control and Prevention about an average 19-year-old American woman, who is about 163 cm tall, with a 84-cm waist. With those measurements, Lamm created a doll.
The doll-s tagline (口號(hào))is “Average is beautiful.”
“I think a realistic-size doll is important because when I look at current dolls on the market, they all look like supermodels," the artist told APF. “I just had the impression that the wall of supermodels suggests that something is wrong with you if you don-t look like one. So I created an alternative to suggest that it’s OK to look like a normal person."
The Lammily dolls, which are 27 cm tall, have been on sale since last month.
Lammily also has other features. Unlike Barbie and her friends, whose pointed legs would force her to walk on all fours if she were real, Lammily has articulated(樞接的) joints – able to walk, run, and play. The doll can even be put in a yoga position.
What’s more, the Lammily dolls include a sticker package that can help to add real-life marks to the dolls, including freckles, acne, moles, and tattoos.
“You can also add minor cuts and bruises, like ones you'd get from falling down while snowboarding," Lamm told NBC.
“I feel that, right now. dolls are very perfect looking, when, in real life, few of us have perfect skin," Lamm told The Huffington Post. “Things like pimples are a natural part of who we are. So, why not give dolls a real treatment?"
As The Huffington. Post said, "Getting kids used to the idea that these things are completely normal and not 6flaws'(缺陷) to be ashamed of can only be a good thing."
1.Why did Nickolay Lamm make the Lammily doll? (No more than 14 words) (2 marks)
2.How is the Lammily doll different from Barbie dolls? (No more than 13 words) (3 marks)
3.What does Lamm mean when he says, "why not give dolls a real treatment?" in the second-to-last paragraph? (No more than 1 words) (3 marks)
4.What is the author-s attitude toward Lammily dolls? (No more than 6 words) (2 marks)

Being active in your local community is important because it is an essential part of living a satisfying life.
Humans by nature are social beings. We need to be around other people to feel happy, secure and safe. Hanging out with friends helps, but that isn’t quite enough. We need to be active in our local community.
Everyone benefits from a strong community. Being active within our society helps individuals feel less lonely, have a more vital and interesting life, stay healthy and feel happier. Being active within our society brings us inspiration, helps us succeed in business and helps us find our way in life.
Communities thrive﹙興旺﹚ when people are better connected. Local economies expand, businesses succeed, education grows, support systems become more efficient, and so on.
There may be some obstacles on the way to being active in the local community. People may become disconnected from their community. It is a modern day reality that people turn to their computers for connection with others. This can be a great thing, but it can also go too far and we can become separated from our local, physical world society. Computers are usually at their best when used as a tool to accomplish tasks and not as a portal (傳送門(mén)) into an online existence that controls our life. Online communities have become very real and they help millions feel more connected, but they must not take the place of our physical life community.[來(lái)
It is also common for people to find jobs online and to migrate to different locations around the world. This uproots﹙使人遷移他處居住﹚ us and takes us away from the local society we grew up in, forces us to make new friends and establish ourselves in a new community.
Becoming active in our community does require effort, but it’s well worth it. Understanding the importance of community and becoming more active within yours will greatly increase your quality of life.

I still remember it was in the winter of 1990 that, together with the help of my older sister, I down my wishes for Christmas onto a piece of paper. How I wished on Christmas Eve my grandest wish would be and placed under the Christmas tree — a puppy. When we were done, our wish-lists were collected by our parents with the promise to be to Santa's hard- working helpers.
The next day, our parents sat us down in the living-room, with expressions on their faces. As it , they had seen our wishes, now wanting to talk to us about one wish — the puppy. For a moment, I held my breath, but was when they told us that they weren't against a puppy. What they against was putting it under the Christmas tree. That was not a good idea.
They taught us that an animal was not a gift that belonged to the same as our toys. Animals were creatures with that we should decide to have one, and it would be a(n) to our family. An animal a lot of responsibilities. It wasn’t anything one bought out of a mood. An animal could not be exchanged or when we didn't feel like it. An animal wasn’t a toy. An animal was a family member that needed lots of love and attention. An animal was not a , but a family decision. A serious decision. And a big decision.
, my parents share my love for animals, so the decision came reasonably . After our grandparents had given their up for taking care of the dog, while we were on future vacations, the answer was yes. Yes, we would get a puppy.
The following days and weeks, there was only one : our new family member! Yes, a family member, because animals have their rights. They are not simply food or gifts. We humans must attend, love and protect them.
