This morning I went to a shoes shop to buy a pair of new shoes. When I got there, I noticed a foreign lady talk to a salesgirl. But the salesgirls didn’t understand that foreigner was saying. They both looked worrying. I went up to help them. The lady is Australian. She wanted to buy a pair of traveling shoes. So I told that to the salesgirl. The lady was very much glad when she took it. She sings high praise for my spoken English. All of them expressed their thanks to me. I felt happy that I expressed myself free in English.

Dear Grandma,

It was nice seeing you at Christmas. You looked so happy!

After losing two grandparents within the past year, I have taken some time to reflect on(反思) what is most important.I want to let you know what a positive influence you have been on me.I am the person I am because of you.

I remember being on your farm a lot when I was younger.I remember the projects you planned for us.We painted rocks to represent our family members. We made doll clothes out of colorful socks. We made many "playhouses" in the woods.

We learned that if you left a bucket of soybeans in the rain, you would soon have a bucket of growing beans. We learned that if we helped pick the strawberries in the morning, we'd have them on our ice cream in the afternoon. We learned that some plants have funny names, like the elephant ear plant. We learned that you could make do with what you had.We learned that making things out of paper and cardboard was more fun than what came inside the packaging. We learned it was OK to get dirty, but Grandma would wash us up before Mom came.

You once made models of everyone's houses, which made me want to be an architect.Another time, you made quilts for all of the grandkids.I still use mine every night. The edge has worn out.

But you taught me how to fix it.

I love and respect you.You are always patient, with a quiet determination.

Grandma, thank you for everything you have taught me.I hope that I am able to pass on all these memories and skills to my children and grandchildren.

Love always,

Kelly

In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.

We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mom's vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn't care much about my bedtime.

Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mom was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel (桶) of paint but couldn't really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.

Mom and Dad were occupied/busy in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mom rescued me. 1 hadn't turned 5 yet.

As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail(欄桿) at school?

As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder (駕雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn't realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped heavily and well sheltered (保護(hù)) from the freezing and blowing weather.

In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d'Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbors of Alaska.

1. What can be inferred about the author's family?

A. His father was a cruel man.

B. His parents didn't love him.

C. His mother didn't have any jobs.

D. His parents used to be very busy.

2.What happened when the author was 4?

A. He learned to smoke.

B. He was locked in a basement.

C. He was arrested(拘捕) by the police.

D. He nearly caused a fire accident.

3.Which of the following is true?

A. Leonhard was good at driving dog sleds.

B. The author spent his whole childhood in Alaska.

C. Leonhard often visited the author's family after 1950.

D. The author suffered a lot while taking the dog sled in Alaska.

4.What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

A. To describe the extreme weather of Alaska.

B. To look back on his childhood with adventures.

C. To express how much he misses Leonhard.

D. To show off his pride in making trouble.

Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children.

One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs.

A second study ,looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year –olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don't rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年輕人)may watch lots of TV.

Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. These with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per week night during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2 1/2 hours for those who had no education beyond high school.

In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest.

While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms

1.According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _________.

A. have watched a lot of TV

B. not be interested in math

C. be unable to go to college

D. have had computers in their bedrooms

2.What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results?

A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV.

B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest.

C. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds.

D. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain

3.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. More time should be spent on computers.

B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV.

C. 'IV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms,

D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done

4.What would be the best title for this text?

A. Computers or Television

B. Effects of Television on Children

C. Studies on TV and College Education

D. Television and Children's Learning Habits

On Punctuality

A punctual man is in the habit of doing everything at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.

The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. 1. There is a proverb that says, “Time flies never to be recalled.” This is very true. 2. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself, and the unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his own valuable assets as well as others'. The unpunctual man is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or to return calls, or to keep appointments promptly. 3. He knows that he can't get through his immense amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every appointment promptly and deals with every piece of work when it has to be attended to.

4._ If a person is invited to a dinner and arrives later than expected, he keeps all the other guests and the host waiting him alone. This is great disrespect.

5. Imagine how it would be if those who are entrusted with important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or his fellow men. And the unpunctual man is a source of annoyance both to others and to himself.

A.Failure to be punctual is a sign of disrespect towards others.

B.A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained.

C.He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both his time and his good name.

D.Unpunctuality is very harmful when it comes to doing one's duty.

E.Of these the former are the majority.

F.But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it.

G.Broadly speaking, humans can be divided into two classes.
