Libraries everywhere in the world have always been people’s only access to important sources of information.  This historical function of libraries has worked out for centuries and has made libraries a necessity to people.  Now, that function has been called into question by the fast development of digital media over the past several decades. In order to continue to hold the public interest, libraries everywhere are forced to develop means of granting access to these expensive new services to average people.
In the past, the publishing industry maintained the rights of libraries to freely provide published materials on the condition that libraries bought so many of their books. Since the new electronic publications can easily be copied in their completeness by the library readers, the publishing industry is reconsidering its former support of the library system. There have even been attempts to stop libraries from delivering digital media.
In addition to the reluctant cooperation of the publishing industry, there is the problem that the newer forms of information are much more specialized than those which they replace. Deciding how to transfer already limited resources is increasingly difficult as there are more methods. While a single reference index(索引) might have covered an entire field in the past, now there are frequently several specialized indexes available in electronic form. Above all, in order to continue to make use of the newer technology, libraries must decide which kinds of material are most useful to the majority of their readers. There are many different solutions being applied, but only the process of trial and error will help find out the most effective method.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 20 WORDS)
1. What has been called into question?
2. In the past, publishers cooperate with libraries because ______________.
3. The most important way to use the new technology is to determine ________
4. According to the passage, how can best solutions be found?

Bernstein had been appointed Assistant Conductor for the New York philharmonic only a few months before that night. Just 25 years old, he was relatively inexperienced. People in the United States honour their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.

People fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor in 1944, when she starred in National Velvet-the story of Velvet Brown, a young girl who wins first place in a famous horse race, At first, the producers of the movie told Taylor that she was too small to play the part of Velvet. However, they waited for her for a few months as she exercised and trained—and added three inches to her height in four months! Her acting in National Velvet is still considered the best by a child actress.
Elizabeth Taylor was born in London in 1932. Her parents, both Americans, had moved there for business reasons. For much of the world, vegetarianism (素食主義) is largely a matter of economics: Meat costs a lot more than beans or rice, so meat becomes a special-occasion dish. Even where meat is more plentiful, it’s still used in control, and it often provides a side note to a meal rather than taking center stage.
In countries like the United States where meat is not as expensive, though, people choose to be vegetarians for reasons other than cost. Parental preferences(父母親的偏愛), religious or other beliefs, and health problems are among the most common reasons for choosing to be a vegetarian. Many people choose a vegetarian diet out of concern over animal rights or the environment. And lots of people have more than one reason for choosing vegetarianism.
Different people follow different forms of vegetarianism. A true vegetarian eats no meat at all, including chicken and fish. A lactoovo(乳制品)  vegetarian eats dairy products  and eggs, but keeps out meat, fish, and chicken. It follows, then, that a lacto(乳,乳汁) vegetarian eats dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo (蛋,雞蛋) vegetarian eats eggs but not dairy products.
A stricter form of vegetarianism is veganism. Not only are eggs and dairy products excluded (排除) from a vegan diet, so are animal products like honey. Some macrobiotic (養(yǎng)生的) diets fall into the vegan category. Macrobiotic diets limit not only animal products but also refined(經(jīng)過提煉的) and processed foods, foods with preservatives, and foods that contain caffeine or other stimulants (刺激物).
Following a macrobiotic or vegan diet could lead to nutritional deficiencies (營養(yǎng)不足) in some people. Teens need to be sure their diets include enough nutrients to fuel growth, particularly protein and calcium (鈣). If you’re interested in following a vegan or macrobiotic diet it’s a good idea to talk to a registered dietitian(營養(yǎng)學家). He or she can help you design meal plans that include enough nutrients.
小題1:The underlined sentence in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A.there is usually a note beside the meat in a meal
B.meat often attracts people’s attention in a meal
C.meat is served only a small amount in a meal
D.meat should play an important part in a meal
小題2:Which of the following is NOT the reason for Americans being vegetarians?
    A.They are environmentally friendly.
B.They are concerned about the rights of animals.
C.They worry about their own health.
D.They can’t afford to buy meat.
    小題3: A vegan diet will include ______.
A.neither animal products nor diary products
    B.diary products but no eggs
    C.a(chǎn)nimal products like honey
    D.processed food
小題4: According to the passage, the author would probably think that ______.
A.a(chǎn)ll the people should become vegetarians

C.vegetarianism is not a good thing for the world
D.vegetarianism can make a country develop faster

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I’m tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter.” I also surprised by how hard-working US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.
小題1: What does the word “tan” in the sixth paragraph mean in Chinese?
