Earlier this morning I e-mailed an old friend, Mark. We have been out of touch for 12 years, but the 36 is a wonderful thing. Finding his e-mail address 37 less than a minute. He is working on his doctoral paper in western America.
Mark and I met at a summer 38 that we both attended. I went every year from the time I was 8 or 9 until I was 15. I don’t 39 exactly, but I think Mark was there for as many years as I was.
We lived close to each other and 40 saw each other around the campsite, but not often. Mostly we stayed together for a week or two in the 41 and wrote letters back and forth during the rest of the first few years. I still have all of his letters in a box somewhere. I come across them occasionally and 42 to sit down and read through them, but I never have. He was a 43 and precious friend to me, and I am deeply 44 that we have drifted so far apart.
Mark was a very kind and incredibly bright and funny 45 . He loved Monty Python — I mean he was a fanatic(狂熱者), and could 46 entire movies from memory. He was one of those kids who 47 such a unique and powerful mind 48 they never quite fit into the main stream of life. 49 Mark, who I believe realized that, never seemed to care about it. When I knew that Mark was working on his 50 (on a highly intellectual and fairly mysterious and difficult topic), I thought, “Well yes, of course.” He is just where I would
51 him to be.
I wonder if he will write me back. I wonder if he will be 52 by where I am. I wonder whether he and I can be 53 again, or whether these years have left us with 54
in common. I wonder whether he can ever be the man I 55 , or only remain the boy I knew.

A man came home from work late, tired and found his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man. 71 “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Then he looked up and said, “Daddy, may I borrow $10?” The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked for that is to borrow some money to buy a silly toy, then you should go to bed.” 72
After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think. Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. 73 “Are you asleep, son?” He opened the door and asked. “No, Daddy,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you just now.” said the man, “Here’s the $10 you asked for.” 74 “Oh, thank you, Daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some small change. 75 “Why do you want more money if you have already had some?” the father asked angrily.
“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do.” The little boy replied, “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home earlier tomorrow, I would like to have dinner with you.”
A. Silently the little boy returned the money to his father with tears.
B. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.
C. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
D. “Daddy, how much do you spend a day?”
E. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room.
F. The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
G. The little boy sat straight up, smiling.

One Sunday morning in June 1959 my mother walked into my room. “Surprise!” she said, proudly holding up a yellow dress. “I made it just for you. What do you think?”
I bit my tongue. How could I tell Mom it was the ugliest dress I had ever seen?
“It’s perfect for church,” my mother continued delightedly.“I wish someone had made a dress like this for me.”
Too bad you can’t wear it, I thought. But I knew Mom had spent a lot of time on the dress. No one should refuse.
Unwillingly I put it on.
All through church I prayed(祈禱),Lord, let me get out of here without anyone seeing me. Especially Dennis Pearce, the boy I had a crush on, one of the coolest boys at Neptune High School. Although we were in some of the same classes, Dennis had never taken any notice of me. Every time I got near him, I became tongue-tied.
At the end of the service I rushed for the door. But I had to wait on the steps while my parents chatted with their friends. Just a little while longer…Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Pearces coming near. Before I could escape, Dennis was right beside me.
I started talking, hoping if I kept it up he wouldn’t notice my ugly dress. “I’m going to college in September,” I said.
“That’s great,” Dennis replied “I got accepted to police academy(學(xué)院).”
“Wow!” I said. Somehow I kept the conversation going. The next thing I knew Dennis had asked me out on a date!
We courted(戀愛)through college, and eventually got married. Months after our wedding I asked Dennis if he remembered the day he had first asked me out.
“Certainly I do,” he said.“You were always quiet in school. I didn’t think you’d be much fun. But you were so lively when we talked on the church steps, I wanted to get to know you better.” Maybe that yellow dress wasn’t what I would have chosen, but that day it was the perfect dress for me.
