He wishes the holiday season would end already. His back aches, his red suit feels like a spacesuit , his cheeks have gone tight from smiling for 12 hours —and still the kids keep coming and coming , like ants at a picnic . As Christmas becomes more commercialized (商業(yè)化) across the U. S. and Canada, so must Santas. As the holiday begins earlier each year, so must its spokesmen .
The questions from children these days are harder than ever. Now, with thousands of children expecting a father or mother serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, the questions are as heart-breaking as they are unanswerable. For example, “Can you please bring Daddy home from the war in time for Christmas morning?”
Santas also have a pretty good chance of getting sued (指控). A professional Santa Claus in Canada told a story: A Santa had a girl on his knee, and he commented, “You have nice eyes and nice hair.” The girl later said it was sexual harassment (騷擾) . When a Santa feels anxious, he often shows it in the same ways ordinary people do: The Santas were always seen to hang around at the dinner table when the show ended. Many of them just sleep in bed for several days and don’t see other children again.
【小題1】In the first paragraph, “spokesmen” refers to .
A.businessmen | B.political leaders |
C.organizers of the activities | D.Santa Clauses |

I was in lodgings (寄宿處) now, on my own, but the other lodgers had constant visitors up and down the stairs past my door. None of this disturbed me except one girl who sang softly to herself an old Russian folk song as she ran up to the room above. It was a sound of sweetness, musical, soft, unselfconscious and happy. I began to listen out for it, jumped up from my table, and threw open the door to catch a glimpse(一瞥) of her as she passed, but I was always too late. I asked the people upstairs who she was, and described the beautiful sounds she made. They became rather reserved(拘謹(jǐn)) and exchanged glances and hurriedly admitted it might be Sally. I thought she was someone special, not to be discussed in the ordinary way, and became a little curious to meet her. But the last thing I wanted at that stage was to get caught up with anybody. I’d just come to the end of a rather painful friendship, and now I had work to do.
One day, I came face to face with a girl on the landing. It was certainly her; whoever made that noise would look as she did. We stood and stared at each other too long for comfort. I broke the moment and, excusing myself, moved past her because it was too like the movies. I thought for some time of that long, silent stare, and laughed. She was tall and looked proud, with a slight , round-shouldered look that made me breathless and I didn’t know why.

You may argue with your partner and end up in a quarrel; or you disagree with a friend, and have an argument with him or her. In either case, you end up feeling low, and want to make up as soon as possible. The only way is to say “sorry”! This is the most precious word in the English language. Read on to find out how to say sorry in the right way.
The first thing to remember is not to hide your feelings. Apologize only if you really do feel sorry. Do not lie or give false excuses. Even if it takes the person a long time to respond(回應(yīng)),do not let your temper rise, since you cannot expect a person to accept your apology at once. Give your partner time to cool off a bit, and then apologize. It is always better to sort things out quickly. Remember that it does no good to keep arguing about who is right or wrong when tempers are flying.
When apologizing, always look the other in the eyes, and stay calm. Do you want to know how to say sorry to a girl? Once you’ve accepted that you’ve make a mistake, meet her in person to apologize. Never say sorry to a girl on the phone. You can say sorry with flowers or with a card. Small gifts are also very effective.
It can be difficult to say sorry after a fight. A written apology for an unforgivable mistake, such as cheating, is often the best way.
Owning up to a mistake is very important, and it takes courage to apologize for bad behaviour. Your effort will not change the past, but can have a big effect on the future.
