Watercolor is the oldest paints known. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.

Fresco(壁畫(huà)), one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster(灰泥). Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world.

The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go down-hill, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly for doing sketches(素描) or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for the outdoors and also small, private pictures. The softness of watercolor had a remarkably strong attraction for them.

The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until in the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well-known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.

For many people around the world, a subway journey means speeding from one dull station to the next, surrounded by too many uncomfortable, impatient people. But on the Moscow Metro, taking the subway is like walking through a national heritage site. Depending on where you get off, you'll receive a brief course in architectural movements and face colorful glass windows, marble(大理石)columns, gilded (鎏金的)mosaics and painted scenes from Russian history.

“These extraordinarily beautiful places are unlike any metro station I've ever seen," says Vancouver-based photographer David Burdeny.

When Burdeny, who himself has a master's degree in architecture, first found out about Moscow’s metro stations, he was struck by the work of art. In all, he has photographed 20 of the most beautiful stations.

Burdeny had originally planned to focus on Russian stations more generally, taking photos of examples in both St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“But when I saw the stations in Moscow, they just completely blew away the St. Petersburg ones,"he says.

Shooting in the subway sounds simple, but it is not without challenges. For one thing, Burdeny had to figure out a way to access them between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., when the stations were closed.

In the end, he settled on Arbatskaya Metro Station, whose vaulted (拱頂?shù)模?arches he found the most beautiful. But it also represented a challenge he was not sure he was able to overcome: conveying the hugeness of the spaces. The Arbatskaya platform, for example, stretches 820 feet.“Some of the arches are quite long,” he says. “When you enter them, they' re just so completely grand."

1. We can learn from the text that David Burdeny_.

A. is a world-famous architect

B. is studying Russian history

C. took the subway to and from work

D. took photos of Moscow subway stations

2.What Burdeny found challenging was __.

A. when to take photos of Moscow subway stations

B. whether to work in St. Petersburg or Moscow

C. how to photograph the long arches at Arbatskaya Station

D. where to get off to study the Moscow metro system

3.What does the underlined word “shooting” mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Firing bullets from a gun.

B. Taking photographs.

C. Making movies.

D. Throwing the ball at the basket.

In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There’re too many cars, and you can’t move around a lot.”

Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (導(dǎo)航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique (獨(dú)特的) isthat we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what’s going to happen in front of you when leave home.”P(pán)rofessor Shahabi says his system does more than just answer current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give thefastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.

“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”P(pán)rofessor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

1.Professor Cyrus Shahabi is often late for work because of ________.

A. his living far away

B. his car’s navigation system

C. bad traffic conditions

D. too many cars in his university

2.What is unique about ClearPath?

A. It helps drivers know the road conditions ahead of time.

B. It can make sure that you will never be late for work.

C. It helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road.

D. It can use a lot of information and data all over the world.

3.The underlined word “ hits” in the fourth paragraph probably means ________.

A. has accident

B. gets to

C. turns left or right

D. collects traffic data

4.What’s Professor Shahabi’s attitude toward his invention?

A. Proud. B. Worried.

C. Disappointed. D. Optimistic.

Name: Sam Champion

Hot job: TV Weatherman

Where: WABC-TV, New York City

When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, and snow on TV?

I want to be a foreign journalist. I took courses in weather science at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored in broadcasting news.

How did you finally become a weatherman?

My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station in Paducah, Kentucky. I did everything from turning on the lights in the morning to writing and delivering morning news. I put together weather forecasts, and become interested in them.

Back then, how did you forecast weather?

Independent companies collected computer information that showed, for example, how a single weather system might split into snow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often opposite and the job of a weather man was to study the information and make the best educated guess about the storm.

Has weather forecasting changed much with new technology?

Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar(sound waves used to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But we still know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we just have theories.

Any advice for children who’d like to become weather scientists?

To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. There are still so many more questions about weather than answers. After all, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a society are we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love to solve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists will unlock many of Earth science, and study meteorology in college.

Thanks, Sam
