It was a cold, windy night with a bright full moon in the sky. I was standing at a lonely bus stop waiting for my ride home. I heard a bus coming,so I turned to look. I saw the numbers 666 on the bus. For western people, the number 666 is evil (邪惡) !

I was too frightened to get on. I stopped a passing taxi, jumped in and left there.

A number of years ago I took a Chinese class but things quickly turned sour when the teacher asked me what my favorite number was. “Four ,” I answered. The teacher's face went pale. “No,no no!You. .. you evil!” she screamed. I didn't want to cause trouble. “4” really has been a favorite number of mine since I was a little American boy. Of course,I lost that teacher. But the experience gave me a new favorite number “8” which I proudly declare safe in the knowledge that my Chinese friends will praise (稱贊) my choice.

In Chinese, there are numbers for making a lot of money “888” and those for of a long life “99”. But there also is a number for death “4”. That is why you should never give your Chinese friends four of anything. That is also why every Wang,Liu and Zhang wanted to get married on August 8 ,2008. Please remember 13 and Friday mean bad luck for western people, but 9 means good luck.

Numbers are just one thing. To Chinese people a full moon is good luck. But in the West a full moon is a sign of bad luck. I tried to get praise from my Chinese friends but I couldn^ make myself comfortable to see the full moon and 666 in this dark night.
