I’ve recently discovered that I have a second personality(個性) when I speak English, compared to the original me when I speak Chinese.

Speaking English brings out 1 more outgoing, enthusiastic, relaxed and confident side of me. I am also more open 2 physical expressions when speaking English, such as hugging, gesturing and using more exaggerated (夸張的)3 (face) expressions. I have to say I love this new version of me 4 (well).

Similar things happened to my friend when we were traveling in Japan. My friend, a Chinese 5(speak) fluent Japanese, showed a more modest and gentle attitude when using Japanese. I think it must have something 6 (do) with the fact 7 the Japanese use special words and styles to show respect for an older person or a person at a higher position than themselves.

So learning a new language is really worthwhile. We can not only have direct 8 (communicate) with people from other countries, but also fully understand 9(we) and explore the different sides of us.

I’ve recently started to learn German. Probably in a few years I 10 (see) a more cautious, accurate and hardworking version of myself.

1a

2to

3facial

4better

5speaking

6to do

7that

8communication

9ourselves

10will see

2to。be open to sth.“……開放,易于接受……”。當說英語時我也會對身體動作更加接受,例如擁抱、手勢、并且使用更加夸張的面部(facial)表情。

3facial。facial adj.

6to do。have something to do with …“……有關”。這一定跟日本人在跟長者或者地位比他們高的人說話的時候用敬語有關。

7that。that在此處引導同位語從句。同位語從句所修飾的詞通常是表示抽象概念的詞,同位語來解釋說明它的含義和內容。

8communication。此處需要填名詞communication作賓語。have direct communication with ………

10will see。

Grandparents Answer a Call

As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.

No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to adult children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing. Even President Obamas mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and move into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study by grandparents. Com, 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson s decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obamas family.

In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t get away from home far enough for fast enough to prove we could do it on our own, says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand, a magazine for grandparents. We now realize how important family is and how important it isto be near them, especially when youre raising children.

Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.

A. 17% expressed their support for it.

B. Few people responded sympathetically.

C. 83% believed it had a bad influence.

A. They were unsure of themselves.

B. They were eager to raise more children.

C. They wanted to live away from their parents.

D. They had little respect for their grandparents.

【4】What does the author suggest the grandparents do in the last paragraph?

A. Make decisions in the best interests of their own.

B. Ask their children to pay more visits to them.

C. Sacrifice for their struggling children.

D. Get to know themselves better.

It is reported that although our genes and environment play an important role, how happy we are largely depends on our choices and activities. The following are just several areas that tend to make a big difference to people’s happiness.

Take a positive attitude

Positive emotions―like joy, gratitude, satisfaction, inspiration and pride― don’t just feel good when we experience them. 1 So although we need to be realistic about life’s ups and downs, it helps to focus on the good aspects of any situation―the glass half full rather than the glass half empty.

Accept who you are and what you are

2 Learning to accept ourselves and being kinder to ourselves when things go wrong will increase our enjoyment of life. It also helps us accept others as they are. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to tell you what they think your real strengths are. 3

4

Caring about others is fundamental to our happiness. Helping other people is not only good for them; it’s good for us too. It makes us happier and can help to improve our health. Giving also creates stronger connections between people and helps to build a happier society.

Take part in something bigger

People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier. They also experience less stress, anxiety and depression. 5 It might come from doing a job that makes a difference, or spiritual beliefs, or our family. The answers may be different for each of us but they all involve being connected to something bigger than ourselves.

A. Our broader social networks bring a sense of belonging.

B. Nobody is perfect.

C. Give them a call or offer your support.

D. Try to make more use of these.

E. They also help us perform better, and improve our physical health.

F. But where do we find meaning and purpose?

G. Do things for others.

Like it or not, there will be difficult times in our lives. You might lose your job, fail in your exams or have an illness. 1 Here are some ways not to lose hope during difficult times.

1.1Have faith.

2 No matter how bad the situation is, things will turn out to be good in the end. Several years ago I failed to get my master’s degree. It was a really bad experience.3 It was of much better quality than my previous university. Experiences like this strengthen my belief that having faith is important during difficult times.

2.Be around supportive people.

Going through difficult times is hard, and going through them alone is even harder. You need a group of positive people who can support you. 4 If you don’t, my suggestion is to start looking for one. Don’t wait until you need it, because it will be too late by then. You need the community before difficult times come.

3.Help others.

An additional benefit of being in a good community is that it encourages you to think about other people. It pushes you to help others and, therefore, think about other people. 5 As a result, your situation won’t look as bad as it would be otherwise. Often the situation looks worse than it really is because we give too much attention. Shifting(移開)some of your attention away will put the situation in a better view.

A.Your community helps a lot.

B.Whatever it is, it’s important not to lose hope.

C.However, I changed my attitude towards failure.

D.In this way you shift your focus away from yourself.

E.But I got a scholarship at an overseas university later.

F.You must believe that things will work out well eventually.

G.You should become part of a community that cares for one another.
