NPR has ended its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.
NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his ending in this organization on Wednesday night.
The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O’Reilly, asked him to respond to the idea that the United States was facing a “Muslim dilemma(窘境).”Mr. O’Reilly said, “The cold truth is that in the world today jihad(圣戰(zhàn)), helped and encouraged by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet.”
Mr. Williams said he agreed with Mr. O'Reilly.
He continued: “You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane. I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim clothing and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and known as Muslim. I get worried. I get nervous. ”
Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who was guilty this month trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square. “He said the war with Muslims, America's war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don’t think there’s any way to get away from these facts,” Mr. Williams said.
NPR said in its statement that the remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and weakened his reputation as a news analyst with NPR”
The public radio organization said it thanked him for many years of service. Mr. Williams did
not immediately respond on Wednesday night to an e-mail seeking comment.
Mr. Williams' contributions on Fox raised eyebrows at NPR in the past. In February 2009, NPR said it had asked that he stop being identified on “The O’Reilly Factor” as a “senior correspondent for NPR,” even though that title was accurate.

A newly-published study has shown that loneliness can spread from one person to another, like a disease.
Researchers used information from the Framingham Study, which began in 1948. The Framingham Study gathers information about physical and mental health, personal behavior and diet. At first, the study involved about 5,000 people in the American state of Massachusetts. Now, more than 12,000 individuals are taking part.
Information from the Framingham Study showed earlier that happiness can spread from person to person. So can behaviors like littering and the ability to stop smoking.
University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo led the recent study. He and other researchers attempted to show how often people felt lonely. They found that the feeling of loneliness spread through social groups.
Having a social connection with a lonely person increased the chances that another individual would feel lonely. In fact, a friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. A friend of that person was 25% more likely. The researchers say this shows that a person could indirectly be affected by someone’s loneliness.
The effect was strongest among friends. Neighbors were the second most affected group. The effect was weaker on husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters. The researchers also found that loneliness spread more easily among women than men.
The New York Times newspaper reports that, on average, people experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. It also found that every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about five percent, or two and a half fewer lonely days.
Loneliness has been linked to health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties. The researchers believe that knowing the causes of loneliness could help in reducing it.
The study suggests that people can take steps to stop the spread of loneliness. They can do this by helping individuals they know who may be experiencing loneliness. The result can be helpful to the whole social group.
What is true about the Framingham Study?
A. It was only conducted in 1948. B. It involves more than 12,000 participants.
C. It was led by John Cacioppo D. It showed that any behavior could spread.
From the passage, we can learn that .
A. the habit of littering doesn’t spread
B. a lonely person won’t have friends
C. everyone may be affected by others’ loneliness
D. lonely people don’t know the cause of their loneliness
Which statement about the spread of loneliness is true?
A. The spreading effect was the second strongest among friends.
B. No spreading effect was found on husbands and wives.
C. Women are more likely to be affected than men.
D. Brothers are more easily affected than neighbors.
If you make 10 more friends in a year, the days of your feeling loneliness will be reduced by .
A. 48 days B. 25 days C. 20 days D. 15 days
What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Actions should be taken to help lonely people. B. People feel lonely for many reasons.
C. Ways to fight against loneliness. D. Lonely people can affect others.

Too cold for recess? School policies vary as much as temps
When is it too cold for schoolchildren to go outside for recess(課間休息)? The answer varies widely based on where a school is located and what the kids are used to.
Consider: One northern Minnesota school says it has to be 15 below zero before kids are kept inside. But in areas along the East Coast, temperatures below 35 to 40 degrees could keep kids inside. Canceling recess because of the cold is no small issue considering that much of the USA is trembling through what may be its coldest winter in a generation, according to AccuWeather.
There is no national temperature standard for when to keep kids inside during the winter months, the U.S. Department of Education says. Decisions are made at the local level, either by principals or school districts.
Consequently, policies are all over the map:
?? In International Falls, Minn., the self-described "Icebox of the Nation," where the average high temperature in January is 13 degrees, Falls Elementary School Principal Jerry Hilfer says, "if it's 15 below (or warmer), they go out, no matter what." "At 20 below, it gets iffy," he adds.
?? In Wicomico County, Md., principals typically keep children indoors when temperatures drop below freezing, or if it's raining or snowing, says Susan Jones, the school system's director of elementary education.
"That's the bottom line," says Curtis Twilley, principal of Pemberton Elementary School in Salisbury, Md. Twilley says students get little exercise when recess stays indoors. At Pemberton Elementary, the students will typically play board games or computer games in a classroom because the school's gym is occupied with other classes, he says.
?? For schools in Marquette, Mich., which averages about 12 feet of snow per season, school officials acknowledge students are probably a little more prepared than those in some more mild climates.
Which of the following is not true according to the passage_________.
A. No national temperature standard is made for when to keep kids inside during the winter months.
B. Susan Jones insists students get little exercise when recess stays indoors.
C. In Wicomico County, children are kept indoors when temperatures dip below freezing.
D. Mich has about 12 feet of snow per season on average.
Which place calls itself Box of Ice?
Wicomico County B. Marquette C.Salisbury D. Minn
Considering_______, canceling recess In USA because of the cold is a big issue.
A. different schools have different principles.
B. much of the USA has very cold winter.
C. physical activity can boost student performance.
D. decisions are made at the local level,
The underlined word iffy means _______.

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught--- to walk , run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle --- compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone(更不用說) correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(常規(guī)的) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn: how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible(合情理的) to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense(無意義的) in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential(基本的), something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learnt it.
What does the writer think is the best way for children to think?
By listening to their parents’ instructions.
By asking a great many questions.
By making mistakes and having them corrected.
By copying what other people do.
What does the writer think teachers should not do?
A. Give children correct answers.
B. Point out children’s mistakes to them.
C. Allow children to mark their own work.
D. Encourage children to copy one another.
According to the passage, learning to speak and learning to ride a bike are _____.
A. the most important skills B. the basic skills children should master
C. almost the same as learning other skills D. much different from learning other skills.
The writer thinks that children’s progress should only be estimated(評估) by ______.
A. the children themselves B. their parents
C. their teachers D. education authorities(權(quán)威)
The writer is afraid that children will grow up into adults who are ______.
A. too selfish B. too independent
C. dependent and unable to use basic skills D. able to think for themselves
