【題目】Researchers are placing robotic dogs (機(jī)器狗) in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. “No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated (刺激),” Edwards points out. “The problem is how we promote (使……成為現(xiàn)實(shí)) that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”

In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.

“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a seventy-year-old lady. “When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”

The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.

“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry, ” Beck says. “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”

“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people’s minds. ”

1The purpose of Beck and Edwards’ study is to __________.

A. understand human-animal relationship

B. make lonely old people’s life better

C. find the causes of old people’s loneliness

D. promote the animal-assisted research

2In the research, the old people are asked to ____________.

A. note the activities of AIBOs

B. keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeks

C. record their feelings and activity.

D. analyze the collected information

3What is the advantage of AIBO over live dogs?

A. It is easier to keep at home.

B. It can help the disabled people.

C. It responds to all the human orders.

D. It can watch TV with its owner.

4The author seems to suggest that the future robotic dogs may _____________.

A. cure certain diseases

B. keep old people active

C. change people’s beliefs

D. look more like real dogs

【題目】In a room at Texas Children Cancer Center in Houston, eight-year-old Simran Jatar lay in bed with a drip (點(diǎn)滴) above her to fight her bone cancer. Over her bald (禿的) head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third graders cheery dressing didnt mask her pain and weary(疲倦的) eyes.

Then a visitor showed up. Do you want to write a song? asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic(電子) keyboard, a microphone and speakers(揚(yáng)聲器). Simran stared. Have you ever written a poem? Anita Kruse continued. Well, yes, Simran said.

Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone. Some bird soaring through the sky, she said softly. Imagination in its head…” Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling (鳴, 唱) birds, and finally the girls voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song.

That was the beginning of Anita Kruses project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer(作曲家) and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help came in one flash.

The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling (蜷縮) in pain in her wheelchair, stood unaided to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkins disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It.

My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses, says Anita Kruse. But they also make you happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families.

Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the really sweet and nice and loving lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.

Dear Brad,

I’m very glad to hear from you. In your last letter you ask about the post-80s in China. Actually I am the boy who belongs to this group. Comparing with our parents, life for us is getting much hard. The job market is tough and the house is expensively to afford. Now many girls prefer to marry with a man who owns a house and a car. Therefore, I don’t think love built on house and cars is true love, and I doubt how long it will last.

As a matter of fact, though situations are tough today, a lot of we post-80s are making great efforts to live a good life. I believe we will have a nice future.
