11.What's your opinion on spicy food?Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili(辣椒) in their dinner while others can't get enough of it.
Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love chili while others loathe it.Plenty of research has been done on the subject,dating as far back as the 1970s.Previous results showed that a love of chili is related to childhood experiences,and cultural influences affect our taste buds,too.But the latest study has found that a person's love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else,CBC News reported.
"We have always assumed that liking drives intake---we eat what we like and we like what we eat.But no one has actually directly bothered to connect these personality traits(特點(diǎn)) with intake of chili peppers,"said Professor John Hayes from Pennsylvania State University,who led the study.
But before you look at the study,you should first know that"spicy"is not a taste,unlike sour,sweet,bitter and salty.It is,in fact,a burning sensation that you feel on the surface of your tongue.This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people's longing for thrill,something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.
In the study,97participants,both male and female,were asked to fill out questionnaires about certain traits of their personality,for example.Whetherthey like new experiences or tend to avoid risks.They were then given cups of water with capsaicin(辣椒素),the plant chemical that makes chili burn,mixed into them.
By comparing the answers to questionnaires and what participants said they felt about the spicy water.Researchers found that those who most tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.
Interestingly,we used to believe that the reason some people can withstand(承受) spicy food is that their tongue have become less sensitive to it.However,this latest study has found otherwise.It's not that it doesn't burn as badly,it's thatyou actually learn to like the burn,"Hayes explained.

32.What's the meaning of the underlined word"loathe"in the second paragraph?D
A.a(chǎn)dapt to      B.fear       C.love    D.dislike
33.What did Professor John Hayes and his team discover from their study?B
A.what we eat actually helps to develop our personalities.
B.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food.
C.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females.
D.People are wrong to treat spicy as a kind of taste rather than a feeling.
34.Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?C
A.Because their taste buds have become less sensitive.
B.Because they want to challenge themselves.
C.Because they love the burning sensation.
D.Because the more they try spicy food,the less it burns.
35.What's the main idea of the passage?A
A.That a person enjoys spicy food depends largely on the personality.
B.What he or she likes to eat mainly decides on his or her personality.
C.His or her childhood experiences decide on his or her personality.
D.His or her cultural background decides on his or her personality.

15.Adults are happy to tell their children that crusts (面包皮) will give them curly hair,carrots will help them see in the dark,and spinach will make them strong.Even though adults know it's not totally true,they think it's good for their children's health,a study had found.
In a study about 31per cent of adults said they once told their children the curly hair tale,and 36per cent said they'd been told the same thing by their mother or father.Among the over-50s,almost half said they'd been promised curly hair if they ate their crusts.A quarter of the 2,000adults questioned in the study told their children carrots would help them see in the dark.This could be true to some extent because of the high levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene in root vegetables.
Another favorite among parents is that milk will make one strong.A third surveyed said their parents told them this,and about 29per cent said they told their children the same thing.But while there is plenty of evidence to suggest milk is good for people's health,there are also a lot of scientific papers saying it isn't.
Thanks to Popeye,spinach is also fed to children,along with the idea that it will make them strong.While there is also some truth in this one,scientists now believe it is not the iron,but the inorganic nitrates (無(wú)機(jī)硝酸鹽) that improve physical power.
One in seven of the surveyed admitted telling their little ones that runner beans will make them run faster,which is nothing more than wordplay and has no basis in science.Almost one in five adults were subjected to the same tale in childhood.
Just over one in 10parents told their children green food would turn them into a superhero,and a quarter admitted hiding vegetables in meals.
Lyndsay Jones,spokesman for Persil Washing Up Liquid,said,"It's clear that the most persuasive stories about food are passed on from generation to generation.Our research shows that the ideas continue,and we tell our kids the same things our parents told us,even if they're not always entirely true."
Crusts may not make your hair curly,but there's plenty of research that says crusts contain more of the goodness than the rest of a loaf.Hopefully,as a result of our Cook with Kids promise,more parents will be encouraged to spend time with their children in the kitchen and teach them the truth about food.

32.We can know from Paragraph 3thatC.

C.there is doubt whether milk is helpful to people's health
D.a(chǎn)bout 29percent people wish their children good health
33.Which of the following does Lyndsay Jones agree?D
A.Adults are willing to teach their children as their parents did.
B.Most persuasive stories about food are false.
C.Stories about food shouldn't be passed on from generation to generation.
D.Parents can't make sure if some stories about food are totally true.
34.We can learn from the passage thatB.
A.scientists think the iron in spinach helps children grow strong
B.parents are expected to tell children the truth about food
C.runner beans can really make children run fast
D.crusts are said to contain less nutrition than a loaf
35.How is the passage mainly developed?C
