We know the westerners like to plan for their time carefully in order to do all the things that are important to them. So if your American or English friend asks you to dinner, he usually invites you a week ahead. But if you really have no time and can’t go to the dinner, you can ring him to say sorry. The dinner is usually served at home, sometimes at a restaurant. You should get there on time, and don’t forget to put on your fine clothes. It is also a good idea to take some little presents to your friend, such as flowers, chocolates and so on. When you are at dinner, you should also observe (遵守) some other customs. Here I’ll give you some dos and don’ts about them in the following:
●Don’t leave bones on the table or the floor. (You should put them on your plate with fingers.)
●Don’t use your bowl to drink soup, but use your spoon to help you instead.
●Don’t talk with much food in your mouth.
●Don’t ask others to have more wine. (This is quite different from that in China.)
●After dinner, use your napkin(餐巾) to clean your mouth and hands.
●Make sure small pieces of food are not left on your face.
Then after dinner, you can stay there a little time. And your friend will be pleased if you leave in half an hour or so. Next day, you had better ring him up to thank him for the good dinner.

The tree blocked the view and made the office seem dull. Unfortunately, this happened to be the room assigned to me, and l was depressed by it for quite some time.
When the first spring came, everything was green except the locust tree.I felt very happy because I had thought it had died!

STRANGERS parties go wild these days. The main idea of them is to never let the people know who their matches are until the last minute. These are some popular practices that are storming the world’s youth on this V-day.
Speed dating
It’s exactly what the name implies. Complete with a timer, a whistle and 50 willing singles, speed dating is not the traditional dinner and a movie type of first date. Singles pay US $35 for three minutes with more than two dozen future dates. They ask questions and try to get to know each other. At the sound of a whistle, they do the same thing all over again―25 times in all.
Lock and key party
Women are given a lock and men are given a key, upon arriving at the party. Each key and lock has several matches. One can hunt for his/her later-to-be sweetheart in various groups, and try out the key or lock. Each time a lock and key match the pair are entered into a ballot (票數) for top prizes!
Dinner in the dark
Waiters wearing night vision glasses guide the guests through the pitch-black dining room. They are seated at the table and familiarized with the wine glass and plate. Food is handled with the fingers. People will not see the food they are eating or the guests at their table until the dessert course. At that moment, dining partners will appear.
Message party
Have A Cocktail, Leave A Message! When you arrive, you get a tag with a number and a pad of post-it notes. If you see someone you like, write a message on the message board. But wait… You’ve got a message… Go and collect it! You can make new friends and win lots of gifts. The more messages you leave on the bulletin board, the more chances you have of winning prizes.

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked,“Who broke this window?” Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher may have found out.She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
“Oh,” I thought.I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt,I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? It is yours now. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.” I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide--the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.

The whole morning we just checked our own things. We were looking for items to give away. We thought of blankets, food and clothing. Our aim was not to find things we no longer wanted, but things we use every day and would be useful to others.
We made up boxes with the things and added some small toys. Inside the boxes a simple letter was placed, reading:
“Please take these items and know that your life is important. Times are difficult but they will pass. We share what we have, believing it will matter. Use the blanket to stay warm. Be safe and know that the human spirit can overcome anything. Don’t hold your head down. Someday please do the same when you can. How you do it and when, your heart will tell you.
This kind act was not because the phone rang or for any reason. It was simply because it was the right time to do. We have often seen homeless people at the park where we left the belongings. The city would say that it isn’t a problem but I see the lives walking to and from it.
I noticed that my wife had put her favorite green coat into one of the boxes. I asked if she was sure about it and she simply replied that it had a hood (風帽). She liked the coat but knew the hood could shelter (遮擋)someone from the rain.
We don’t know where these gifts of compassion(同情)will go. We never go back and see what happens. It’s unimportant. The right things will find the right people and that is all that counts. On the way my wife started to cry. When I asked why, she said because some things felt so right.
小題1:What can we learn from the first paragraph about the couple?
A.They had deep feelings of their work
B.They often threw the useless daily items away

D.They often gave away the daily items they didn’t use
小題2:The couple placed the letter inside the box mainly to_______________.
A.help the poor go through the difficulties
B.let the poor know who gave away the things
C.tell the poor how to use the items correctly

小題3:The couple liked this kind act because _______.
A.they thought it was the right thing to do
B.they had a good habit of saving things
C.they often received telephone calls for help
D.they hated being troubled by homeless people
