I remember the exact moment I learned the principle of preparing for luck.
I was on the wrestling team. Now, if there’s one thing I can tell you about any sport, it is that wrestling is probably the sport that has the least   31  .There are only two people out on the mat, so you cannot   32  it on your teammates or your coach. And guess what? There is no   33    because we do the whole thing indoors, so you can’t say, “It was raining” or “It was snowing.” It makes   34  to say wrestling is the sport with the least luck.
On our team were two world champions; one of them had been a world champion five times. We   35  had five people who were national champions. One of them was a guy   36  the name of John.
John had never been   37  in any high school wrestling competition that I could remember, 38  he was a national champion. There was nobody locally who could touch him.
One day, we   39  a match with our biggest opponent(對手). John went out on the mat, and about a minute and 30 seconds into the match he tried to make a particular   40  He rolled over, and his opponent  41  him halfway through his roll. He waspinned(壓住) 42 !

We used to have this big   45  in our wrestling room that the coach had put there: “Luck is what happens when opportunity meets   46 .”
John’s opponent was prepared to make use of this opportunity. The possibility of beating John was not   47  and he knew it. But he waited for the  48   opportunity to present itself, and he defeated and pinned a five-time national champion.
In other words, the real  49  is “Be prepared!” It’s not just finding the opportunity; you have to be prepared to   50  it.

After her husband had gone to work, Mrs. Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy-dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost(幽靈) and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on. Though the costume consisted only of a sheet, it was very effective. After putting it on, Mrs. Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.
Just as Mrs. Richards was entering the dining room, there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man, Mrs. Richards quickly hid in the small storeroom under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall. Suddenly the door of the storeroom was opened and a man entered. Mrs. Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had come to read the meter. She tried to explain the situation, saying “ It’s only me”, but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. He has lived through various dangers but time may be running out for the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.
On September 11, Israel announced its decision to remove him, following several Palestinian suicide bomb attacks on Israel. “He should be punished for the killings,” an Israeli official said, “He has done nothing to stop the terrorist groups.”
But the decision has angered many other countries. China said that Arafat is the true leader, elected by the Palestinian people, and removing him would harm the peace in the Middle East. Other governments share this idea.
Arafat himself said: “They can kill me, but never get me out of my country.” He has spent most of his life in danger as the most important aim of Israel. But, just like a cat with nine lives, Arafat escaped every time.
For years he has made a practice of sleeping in a different bed each night, thinking a moving person is harder to hit. In 1985, Israel sent fighter planes to kill Arafat. The wild bombing destroyed his office in Tunis but Arafat himself was unhurt. In 1992, the aircraft in which he was flying over North Africa broke in two during a crash landing. The pilot was killed but he managed to remain alive.
What is so unbelievable is that he always remains calm in great danger. Israeli tanks and planes attacked his office building in Ram Allah in December 2001. When they saw the attackers coming, Arafat’s bodyguards took no notice of his orders to stay still and carried him to safety underground. Seconds later, several bombs were dropped nearby. Though safe, his bodyguards were so frightened that they were wet in sweat.
But, Arafat, with Israeli tanks only 200 meters away, showed no fear at all. He stayed in the damaged office, talking by phone with foreign leaders in hope of preventing further attacks from Israel.
All these experiences have made him a beloved leader to his people and an enemy to some others.
But has he used up the last of his nine lives? Only time will tell.
小題1:.   According to the passage, which statement is true?
A.In 1992, Arafat’s plane crashed in South Africa.
B.Israeli officers thought Arafat himself sent the terrorist groups to Israel.
C.China is the only country against Israel’s decision of removing Arafat.
D.Being Palestinian leader, Arafat would rather die in his own country than be driven away
from his people.
小題2:.  . What did the author mean by saying “just like a cat has nine lives” when he talked about Arafat?
A.Arafat is as clever as a cat.
B.Arafat can live as long as a cat.
C.Arafat can stay alive after accidents or disasters as if he has nine lives.
D.Arafat should have died for at least 8 times.
小題3:.   The underlined phrase “took no notice of” can be replaced by __________.
A.obeyed B.ignoredC.disagreed D.dissatisfied
小題4:.  . What’s the writer’s attitude towards Arafat’s future, judging from the last sentence of the passage?
A.Hopeful.B.Interesting.C.Satisfactory.D.Doubtful.

Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly loved children--all under the age of 5--and I'm upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example: They lock the doors to their children's bedrooms at night because the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them."
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty
word, all three are given hot sauce (辣醬汁) in the mouth. I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
--- Gram
Dear Gram,
Children's bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare (噩夢).Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other. Children who use "naughty" words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth-they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the "naughty" word.
小題1:Gram's daughter _____________.
A.is very strict with her childrenB.does not love her three children
C.a(chǎn)lways punishes her children at nightD.often gives her children hot sauce
小題2: Gram writes the letter in order to ____________.
A.disclose her daughter's ways as a mother
B.criticize her daughter's ways as a mother
C.express her anger about her daughter s ways as a mom
D.get others' opinion about her daughter's ways as a mom
小題3: Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Gram seems to care for her grand children very much.
B.Gram is against some of her daughter's ways as a mom.
C.Abby is for only one of Gram's daughter's ways as a mom.
D.Abby agrees with Gram about her daughter's ways as a mom.

It was a Sunday morning and I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in and said, “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck?”
“No ! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and went. I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it.    “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital.”
When I reached the hospital,my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911,thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨)might have pieced(穿透)a lung…” My mother might have said more, but I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: leave me alone.
It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him. “Daddy…I am so sorry…” “It’s okay, sweetheart.” “No,”I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day.”
My father never tells lies but he looked at me and said, “I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though.” I regretted for my thoughtless words.

Fred Michel is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight. Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three hours to another teenage treatment center.
Last year, 5.4 percent of the American workforce held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.
Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides, says Carl Hausman , the writer of “Moonlighting: 148 Great Ways to Make Money to the Side”.
The information from the US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters take a second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.
People also take second jobs with an eye to the future -- wanting to try out a new field or gain experience.
Michel started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable. He wanted to make sure he wasn’t tied to one system that ended up failing.
Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all ages and racial groups. And they work in a variety of industries -- no longer just service, office and sales jobs.
“Technology just affects your ability to make money,” Hausman says. “That makes a frequent change in moonlighting.”
As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures. Chief among them is time.
Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work because they fear it will affect their employees’ 9-to-5 performance.
“The primary employer is saying, ‘Wait, I’m paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you,’” says Tom Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago. “If you’re burning yourself at both ends, it’s going to show.”
Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety, freedom and chance to do something new. They may also find their part-time jobs strengthen what they do full time.
Besides, “it’s fun,” Michel says. Not only do his part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his professional skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn’t find just in a full-time job.
It’s a way of pulling from the spice cabinet,” he says, “and offering a little variety throughout the day.”
小題1:The reason why Fred Michel began to moonlight is that ________.

A.he found it exciting to do a part-time job
B.he needed to make ends meet with more money
C.he feared he would lose his present job one day
D.he felt more and more pressure from his employer

A.their workers cannot do extra-hour work for them
B.their workers will be too tired to try their best at work
C.their workers will one day turn to some other different jobs
D.their workers will not get to work and be off work on time
小題3:The underlined sentence “It’s a way of pulling from the spice cabinet.” in the last paragraph means ________.
A.moonlighting gets you away from the job you don’t enjoy
B.moonlighting offers you freedom to make extra money

D.moonlighting brings you chances to do something different
小題4:What is the article mainly about?

Well, Mrs Evans, I’ve done my best to look after David. I’ve tidied his room up every day, got him a meal together whenever he needed one and made sure he’s always had a clean shirt to put on. It’s not been easy, with two of my own to worry about, as well. David had the best of attention, I must say. But now because I asked him to give up bringing that American friend to his home he has got quite and unfriendly. He comes in at all hours and his behaviour—well, it’s quite hard to put up with—and it’s all because of this friend. I’m sure he’s a bad influence. You see, David is a visitor and doesn’t fully understand our ways.
He used to study most evenings. He’s got through quite a bit of work. He did up his room quite nicely, with bookshelves and large posters. He’d ask Mr Smith and me up for a drink and cheer us up with songs from his country. He’s very good at the guitar, you know.
I don’t want to appear as if I’m running after him, but it’s about time we made it up. I’m sure he’s upset because I blame him for that. It might be a good idea to take him out for a meal, perhaps even with his friend. I don’t know whether it will do any good but we can try. I’m glad I’ve had this little chat with you, Mrs Evans, and I’ll let you know how I get on.
