The police do many things for us. They help keep our things and us safe. They help keep cars moving safely. They take care of people who are hurt. Then they see these people get to a doctor.
The police go around town to see that everything is all right. They get around town in many ways. Some of them walk or go by car. In some big cities, some of the police ride on horses. It is strange to see these animals in the street.
As they go around town, the police help people. Sometimes they find lost children. They take the children home. If the police see a fight, they put an end to it right away. Sometimes people will ask the police how to get to a place in town. The police can always tell the people which way to go. They know all the streets and roads well.
Some police stand at crossings. They tell the cars when to go and when to stop. They make sure that the cars do not go too fast. They help children cross the street. They also help people who can't walk too well.

Tracey Hermanstorfer's heart stopped beating and her son Coltyn appeared lifeless after the Caesarean(剖腹產(chǎn)術(shù))section on Christmas Eve. However a few minutes after he was born, both began breathing again. Dr Stephanie Martin told Good Morning America she could not explain how the pair survived. Mrs Hermanstorfer and her husband Mike told the American television show that their baby was now healthy and that they were doing “good” following the drama at Colorado Springs Memorial Hospital.
The couple, who already had two children, had to go into the hospital seven weeks earlier than planned. Her husband, 37, said his wife was tired after receiving an epidural(硬腦膜外麻醉)during the labour(分娩)but after closing her eyes, she “wasn't waking up”.She stopped breathing and she is believed to have suffered a heart attack before her heart stopped beating entirely.
Dr Martin said she was called in and that the outlook was grim(嚴(yán)酷的) since in most situations like this,“despite the best efforts of the team”, the mother was often unable to be revived. In that case doctors then tried to focus on delivering the baby but when he was born he was “completely lifeless”.
Mr. Hermanstorfer told the Associated Press news agency,“I had everything in the world taken from me, and in an hour and a half I had everything given to me.”
Dr Martin said she did not have a“great explanation”for why Mrs Hermanstorfer's heartbeat returned. “Somewhere between four and five minutes she had been without heart rate and had stopped breathing a minute or two prior to her heart stopping,”she said. The doctors were then able to bring the baby back to life, and the mother was alive after that.
Despite tests, she said doctors were still not sure about what had happened. However Mrs Hermanstorfer and her husband Mike have said they believed it was down to a miracle. She said:“I got a second chance in life.”

Apple a day may poison children
Children who eat an apple or pear a day may be exceeding(超過) the pesticide(殺蟲劑) safety limit because of remains on the fruit, according to research.
Using data of the British Department of Environment on pesticides on fruit collected from supermarkets, scientists thought that each day some children would get a poisonous level of pesticides.
The research, published on Sunday, says the government repeatedly claims that the levels of pesticide are safe because, instead of measuring individual apples, researchers buy 10,crush them and take an average reading to see if they are safe. This is the internationally agreed method of checking remains.
But government figures show that the pesticide is not averagely spread across the batch(一批),and one or two apples could contain 90% or more of the pesticide in the batch.
It used mathematical modeling to measure exposure(暴露) to pesticides for children aged between 18 months and four years old. The pesticides involved can destroy children’s hormones and some are suspected(懷疑) of causing cancer.
The good news for British fruit growers is that samples grown in this country had lower residue level than imported fruit,so buying home-produced fruit will reduce the danger, said Emily Diamand, one of the Earth’s senior food researchers and one of the authors of the report.
1.The reason why “Apple a day may poison children” is that ______.
A. there are some pests in the apple
B. children would get a poisonous level of pesticides because of the remains on the apple
C. there are always more pesticides on the apples produced in Britain
D. the apple is too hard for children to eat
2.The internationally agreed method of checking remains is to buy ______.
A. two apples, crush them and take an average reading to see if they are safe
B. five apples, crush them and test to see if they are safe
C. ten apples, crush them and take an average reading to see if they are safe
D. eighty apples, and then test them by crushing
3.The underlined word “residue” can be replaced by ______.
A. remains B. pesticide
C. poison D. medicine
4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The remains of the pesticides can do harm to the children’s health.
B. The remains of the pesticides can do harm to the children’s hormones.
C. Some remains of the pesticides are suspected of causing cancer.
D. For safety,we had better not import apples from Britain.
