The Taj Mahal is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian architecture (建筑). It is at Agra in northern India. It lies beside the River Jumna in the middle of gardens with quiet pools.

The Taj Mahal was built by the Mogul emperor (皇帝) Shah Jehan, who ruled India in the seventeenth century. It is in memory of his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Bagam, known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by a local Muslim architect (建筑師), Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The whole building, with gardens and gateway structures, was completed in 1643. The Taj Mahal stands at one end of the garden tomb with marble (大理石) path. The room is softly lighted by the light that passes through double screens of carved marble set high in the walls. The building now is kept in good condition.

The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build. Shah Jehan planned a similar building, but in black instead of white, to lie on the other side of the river. But before it could be built, Shah Jehan was imprisoned (監(jiān)禁) by his son and buried next to his wife in the Taj Mahal.

                                                 British English and American English
Many students want to know the differences between American English and British English. Written English
is more or less the same in both Britain and America, though there are some spelling differences. For example,
the words colour, centre and travelled are spelt color, center, and traveled in American English.
The differences in the spoken language are greater. For example, Americans say dance /dns/, and in southern
England they say /da:ns/. In America, they pronounce not./nt/, in southern England they say /not/. However,
most of the time, people from the two countries do not have any difficulty in understanding each other.
How did these differences come from? There is no quick answer to this question. When people from England
travelled to other countries they took the English language with them. At first, the language stayed the same as
the language used in Britain, but slowly the language began to change from one part of the world.
Sometimes, the English spoken in America or Canada or Australia changed, but sometimes the language
spoken in these places stayed the same while the language in England changed. For example, 300 years ago, the
English talked about "autumn". But Americans still talk about "fall" just as people do in some parts of western
England. In the same way Americans use the expression "I guess" (meaning "I think") just as the British did 300
years ago.
A great many words and expressions have come into the language from American English, for example
movie, gas, store, mail, right away (at once), way of life and so on.
American English has changed over the centuries, too. There are several reasons for this. One of the reasons
is that people travelled to America from all the European countries and from other parts of the world, too. They
started to use English, but they also brought in some words from old French. One of the States in the USA is
called "Florida". In Spanish this is "the land of flowers". There are a great many American Indian words, for
example, "to howl" means "to cry". And "cookbook" is a German word.
根據(jù)文章內(nèi)容判斷下列句子的對(T)與錯(F)。

(     )4. "Florida" means"the land of flowers" in American English.

The world's first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way
to reduce traffic problems. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people. So the officials decided
to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a
convenient way to get to and from work, they would live outside of the city
and this would help reduce the
pressure. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems, but the first track was finally opened in
January,1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers long.
About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. They were treated to comfortable seats and pleasant
decorations inside the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels. Fans had to
be put in the tunnel later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the
Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.
Modem subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground.
Today there are more than one hundred underground systems around the world. Shopping malls built in
traffic stations have helped the popularity of subways. Nowadays many stations include underground

Nowadays in China, parents care about their children’s education more than anything else. They spend a lot coaching their children in their studies; those who have time or are not able to do it have tutors hired for their children. Many have their children sent to after-class schools. Some others even have tired to improve their living environment. It seems as if a better education is all that parents expect for their children.

The situation can be explained by the following reasons. First of all, the swift development of China’s economy is calling for more and more skilled and knowledgeable workers and professionals(專業(yè)人士). Second, the awareness of today’s parents’ has been growing that success in this world depends more on skills and knowledge than on anything else. Skills and knowledge means competitiveness(競爭). At last, with school education becoming more and more expensive, it is natural for parents to expect their children could become somebody or doing something great.

Of course, I’m happy to see much of parents’ attention paid to their children’s education. However, they should not go too far to ignore their children’s abilities and personal qualities. I think the first thing to lean is how to survive and how to be a qualified citizen. if parents can try their best to help children’s characters, it will bring a happy life to their children when they grow up.
