Abigale, who is in the sixth grade at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School, has turned a hobby into a good deed. The 12-year-old learned how to knit(編織) from her mother a year ago. Abigale saw her mom doing it and kept asking her mom to teach her and soon realized that the good could come from her new pastime(消遣).She decided to knit 100 scarves(圍巾) to give to Akron’s homeless population. Abigale said she was inspired by the event of the past year.“After Hurricane Katrina, I saw all those homeless people,”Abigale said.

She also got her mother on board. Since the two began the project, they have knitted about 50 colorful scarves of various sizes. Abigale, who is also involved in cheerleading, music and dance, said it takes her about a week to finish each scarf. Her mother said she does as much as she can to help out, even though she has multiple sclerosis(多發(fā)性硬化癥). Abigale and her mother try to pick out fun colors and textures to keep the project interesting.

It’s not unusual for Abigale to do something for others. In the past years, she has donated her hair for wigs(假發(fā)) through Locks of Love and has been a teacher’s helper at school. She’s been helping her grandmother baby-sit her new granddaughter and she recycles cans for the fire department.

“We’re just going to keep going,”her mother said.“Originally Abigale thought 100 scarves would be enough, but I told her,‘Honey, there’s more than 100 people out there who need them.’Neither of us plans on stopping.”

Parents are a child’s first teachers. But some parents never learned from good examples. In New York City, a nonprofit agency called Covenant House tries to help homeless young mothers become good parents.

The twelve or so teenagers who live at the shelter attend parenting classes four days a week. The class is called Mommy and Me. Teacher Delores Clemens is a mother of five and a grandmother. She teaches basic skills, like how to give a baby a bath and how to dress a baby depending on the season.

She remembers one student who learned from her mother not to pick up a crying baby. The mother said that would only make the child needy and overly demanding. Delores Clemens says, “that's not true. You have to hold your baby! He is crying for a reason. If you never pick him up, he's going to keep crying. Pick your baby up. Cuddle your baby. Hug him! And she started to do that. They just want a little cuddling and a little love. And it works!”

Delores Clemens says her students also learn how to be good mothers by letting themselves be mothered. Around three hundred fifty teenage mothers graduate from Covenant House's Mommy and Me class every year.

In class, with her baby son is Natasha. She lived on the streets. She is glad not only for the warmth and shelter of Covenant House. As she told reporter Adam Phillips, she is also glad for the help they offer in seeking a more secure life.

Drinking a lot of water does not do any good to the body, according to two experts in the United States. In fact, they warn, drinking too much water could be, in certain Cases, harmful.

In a study, Dr Stanly Goldfarb and Dr Dan Negoianu, both of the Renal, Electrolyte and Hypertension Division at the University of Pennsylvania, the United States, have denied the popular belief that drinking a lot of water clears body toxins (毒素) better, improves skin, and helps reduce weight.

Dr Goldfarb and Dr Negoianu say that they found little proof to support the public opinion that drinking 8 glasses of water every day benefits health. At the same time, they found little proof of harm in drinking 8 glasses of water every day.

It is widely believed that in some cases — such as athletes, people who live in hot, dry  environments, and those with certain medical conditions — drinking a lot of water indeed helps,  but no studies have been done to prove the benefits of this practice in average, healthy people, the  website medheadlines. com reports.

The study at the University of Pennsylvania also examined reports that some people experienced increased headaches when their consumption of water was low. In one small study, which the doctors reviewed, the group drinking the most water reported fewer headaches than the control group, “but the difference in the number of headaches was so small between the two groups as to be considered unimportant.”

The researchers concluded that there is no scientific proof to support that average, healthy people need to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day.

The website medheadlines. com says that, according to an Indian doctor, drinking too much water is harmful. If water enters the body more quickly than it can be removed, problems can occur.

   A. Drinking too much water might bring harm.

   B. Whether to drink enough water makes no difference.
