For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. In fact, until a place has a church and a pub,it isn’t really considered a community worthy of a name. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, since it is where people gather to give and receive news. In fact, the word ‘ pub' is short for public house.
That's how it used to be, but things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit decline is causing 39 British pubs a week to go out of business. People don’t have lots of spare money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned smoking in all pubs, and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.
This decline is happening despite the fact that in recent years the UK government has started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 p. m. Previously, with 11 p. m. as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as “binge drinking “, and it causes some long-term health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities. The UK government is changing the law to discourage binge drinking, and regularly spends money on television advertisements to warn people of the problems of drinking too much.
In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. Now, there are a number of different types of pubs.
As you can see, British pubs now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be
working men' s clubs, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.

【題目】Here’s a new warning from health experts: sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods, even if you exercise regularly, could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place--in the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV. Just the overall number of hours it takes matters. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die. While health officials have issued(發(fā)布) guidelines advising on the least amounts of physical activities, they haven’t suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.
“After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” said Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. She explained that genes controlling the amount of glucose(葡萄糖) and fat in the body start to shut down.
Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day but still spend a lot of time sitting might get more benefits if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single hour.
Still in a study that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether they exercised or not. Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects.
People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” Ekblom-Bak said. “And when they’re in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible.”
【1】The underlined word “offset" in Paragraph 6 most probably means_______.
A. get rid of B. make use of
C. work out D. turn to
【2】Sitting too much is dangerous because it can________ .
A. increase glucose and fat in the body
B. make a person become lazy
C. destroy the balance of glucose and fat in the body
D. make a person unable to exercise enough in a day
【3】In the opinion of Ekblom-Bak, when at work, you’d better have a rest by_______ .
A. taking a walk around your office
B. chatting online or playing computer games
C. sending your friends emails
D. listening to music while sitting
【4】Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. More and More People Sit Too Much
B. Side Effects of Sitting Too Much
C. Don’t Sit Too Much While Working
D. Sitting Too Much Could Be Dangerous

On January 5th, students in our school visited Robot World, which we saw a great diversity of robot. It was amazed to find those robots could do a great number of things just like real people, included playing chess, playing the piano and drawing pictures. What’s more, the robots were in different kinds and shapes, which made us enjoyable. In addition, that excited me most is the show given by a group of robots. They danced just as if they were dancers on the stage. By visiting Robot World, I have learned a lot of about robots, especial about their functions and shapes. The great human wisdom is so powerful that it make us feel more comfortable live in the world.
