Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed tragically. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair for the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?

Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interest. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance (基因遺傳), conflicts would be sure to come up if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends upon fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of the parents simply because of bad luck?

Every baby should be wanted for itself, as an individual. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is carefully specifying (詳細說明) the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the United States, much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I suggest there is a greater need to consider the interest of the child and to refuse these suggested uses of cloning.

1.for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one...having particular talents and interests”可知,對于失去孩子的父母來說,他們希望看到的是死去的孩子帶著他原有的天賦、才能和愛好回到他們身邊,而不是一個只有樣貌相同的另一個孩子,說明,父母的期望近于苛刻,這對復制的孩子不公平,故選B。

2.But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance, conflicts would be sure to come up if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original...Success also depends upon fortune.”可知,父母的期望能否實現(xiàn),主要取決于克隆孩子的性格,因為性格只是部分地由遺傳決定,另外還有運氣的成分在里面,故選B。

3.a parent is carefully specifying (詳細說明) the way he or she wishes that child to develop”可知,父親或母親希望克隆的孩子按照他們的愿望來成長和發(fā)展,根據(jù)“much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish”可知,最近,特別是在美國,人們強調(diào)克隆的孩子有權(quán)作為獨立的個體并按照自己的愿望來發(fā)展自己,說明克隆孩子被他們的父親或母親剝奪了作為個體自由發(fā)展的權(quán)利,故選D。

Educating girls quite possibly harvests a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world. Women’s education may be an unusual economical field, but increasing women’s contribution to development is actually as much an economic as a social issue. And economics, with its focus on encouragement, provides an explanation for why so many girls are rid of an education.

Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school-the prophecy becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious(惡性的) circle of neglect.

An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle.

Few will argue that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant effect on health practices, including family planning.
