Are you worried by the rising crime rate? If you are, then you probably know that your house, possessions and person are increasingly in danger of suffering from the great rise in the cases of burglary(入室行竊) and attack.
Figures indicate an ever- increasing crime rate but it is only too easy to imagine “it will never happen to me”. Unfortunately, numbers show that it really can happen to you and, if you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim(受害者).
Fortunately, there is something which you can do. Protect Alarms can help to protect your house with a burglar alarm system which is effective, simple to operate and easy to buy.
You must remember that possessing a burglar alarm is no indication that your house is filled with valuable possessions. It quite simply indicates to unwelcome visitors that yours is one house they will not break into easily so they carry on to an unprotected house where their job is made a lot easier.
Send now for our free leaflet(小冊(cè)) telling you how we can Protect Alarm your house quickly, easily and cheaply. Complete and tear off the slip below and post it to us. Postage is free. When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry. Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted. People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白內(nèi)障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distances as people with two eyes.

With the pace of life continuing to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.
【小題1】People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.
A.they do not know how to enjoy themselves |

B.Stress is always harmful to people |
C.It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work. |
D.Different people can withstand different amounts of stress |
A."making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'" |
B."reaction to stress both chemically and physically" |
C."responding to crises quickly" |
D."losing heart at the signs difficulties" |
A.Stress is a bad thing. |
B.Different people can withstand the same amount of stress. |
C.A certain amount of stress is not a bad thing. |
D.Our health will become endangered if we cannot remove stress. |

Americans have contributed to many art forms, but jazz, a type of music, is the only art form that was created in the United States. Jazz was created by black Americans. Many blacks were brought from Africa to America as slaves. The black slaves sang and played the music of their homeland.

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself. It is part of a system in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the nature order, this will almost certainly bring about changes in some other parts.
The cutting of forests reduced the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals led to the wide-spread poisoning of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean hurt life in the sea, while waste gases changed the chemical balance of the atmosphere and shut out some of the sun’s necessary life-giving rays.
And so we could go on adding more examples until in despair(絕望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs, but he is not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be. Man may well destroy himself because of his silly action.
1.The first paragraph tells us that _____.
A.a(chǎn)ll living things in nature depend on each other |
B.everything in nature can’t exist without the help of man |
C.man has known the importance of the balance of nature for a long time |
D.no living thing can live naturally |
2.In the second paragraph the examples given are used to prove that _____.
A.a(chǎn)ll forms of life belong to a system in which all the parts can be changed for one another |
B.it is only during the last few years that man has generally known the balance of nature |
C.there are some living things which can exist by themselves without change |
D.we can’t change one form of life without destroying the balance of nature |
3.The last paragraph suggests that in order to get his immediate benefits(利益) _____.
A.man is always anxious to control his activities within limits |
B.man is always too eager in planning for distant future |
C.man often fails to think about their future results of his action |
D.man often feels that he will have to give up in despair |
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Cutting down woods does little harm to human beings. |
B.Man has to pay much more attention to the future results of his present action. |
C.Oxygen comes from forests. |
D.The passage tells us to try our best to get as much as possible immediately. |
