14.When a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn't touched a cat or a dog in over 20years.I spent at least 20minutes,knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around,relaxed.What he was expressing outwardly,I was feeling inwardly.It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a life or another creature with something as simple as my care.
Over the next few days,there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered there.They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat.These were guys you wouldn't usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group,not chasing people away,but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water appeared along with bread,wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.
The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place.He's getting treated like a king.This was true.but as I watched I was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America.We need more programs.We need more psychologists or treatment of various kinds.Some may even talk about making prisons more kind.But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness.Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged.It's often seen as a weakness.
Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak.
The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,"I need some help here",he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.
24.Which of the following statements is true?B
A.The cat was dirty because it was kept in prison.
B.The author realized the importance of practising kindness.
C.The officer in the prison enjoyed petting the cat.
D.The prisoners prepared food for both the cat and birds.
25.We can infer from the third paragraph thatD.
A.caring for others is encouraged in American prisons
B.the American prison culture will be improved
C.showing love to others can make prisoners strong
D.the author is not content with the prison culture
26.What is the best title for the passage?C
A.Animals Need Care.
B.Prison Culture is Important.
C.Caring Makes Us Human.
D.Everyone Needs to be Cared for.
27.In Paragraph 2,the author mentioned that"Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners."toC.
A.show us the officer and prisoners get along well with each other
B.show us the officer and prisoners all like the cat
C.show us the American prison culture does need improvement

Make a decision not to hold back in conversations.What you have to say is just as important as what other people say.And don't turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.
Prepare yourself for being with others in groups.Make a list of the good qualities you have.Then make a list of ideas,experiences,and skills you would like to share with other people.Think about what you would like to say in advance.Then say it.

No one ever gets over being shy completely,but most people do learn to live with their shyness.Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy.They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the cameras and the public.Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards.But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know more about you.

8.Dogs can know the meaning of a human perspective,say researchers.
Dogs are more capable of understanding situations from a human's point of view than has previously been recognized, according to researchers.
They found dogs were four times more likely to steal food they had been forbidden, when lights were turned off so humans in the room could not see.
This suggested the dogs were able to alter their behavior when they knew their owners'perspective had changed.
The study,published in Animal Cognition,conducted tests on eighty-four dogs.
The experiments had been trying to find whether dogs could make their behavior suitable to react to the changed circumstances of their human owners.It wanted to see if dogs had a"flexible understanding"that could show they understood the viewpoint of a human.
It found that when the lights were turned off, dogs in a room with their human owners were much more likely to disobey and steal forbidden food.
The study says it is"unlikely that the dogs simply forgot that the human was in the room"when there was no light.Instead it seems as though the dogs were able to differentiate between when the human was unable or able to see them.
Juliane Kaminski carried out the research into how dogs are influenced by human circumstances.
Dr Juliane Kaminski, from the University of Portsmouth's psychology department, said the study was"incredible because it implies dogs understand the human can't see them, meaning they might understand the human perspective".
Previous studies have suggested that although humans might think that they can recognize different expressions on their dogs'faces, this is often inaccurate and a projection of human emotions.
"Humans constantly attribute certain qualities and emotions to other living things.We know that our own dog is clever or sensitive,but that's us thinking,not them,"said Dr Kaminski.
"These results suggest humans might be right,where dogs are concerned,but we still can't be completely sure if the results mean dogs have a truly flexible understanding of the mind and others'minds.It has always been assumed only humans had this ability.

C.Dogs may adapt their behavior in response to the changed circumstances.
D.The research is carried out to find out how dogs are influenced by light.
44.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?C

9."Up until about five years ago, students at this school could have worn anything they wanted on Halloween,"said Rosemarie Nielson,a sixth-grade teacher at St.Theresa School,a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx where there is a prohibition on toy weapons
"When you consider all the horrific things that have happened in recent years, including 9/11,I can't blame any school for wanting to stay away from anything that might promote violence,"Ms.Nielson said.
Mary Ellen Manniello, whose daughter,Courtney,9,is a fourth grader at St.Gabriel School,a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, said she understood why officials had banned weapons with costumes."They're learning more about guns from issues in the street than educational issues."
This year, the school has gone one step further and is prohibiting all costumes at its Halloween festivities.Ms.Manniello said it had become"a chaotic scene,"with parents helping their children change into their costumes at school.
Some parents said the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes went too far and denied children a chance to express themselves
"Halloween has always been the one day when it was acceptable for our children to be dressed like somebody they are not, like a cowboy or a pirate or a person from outer space, and now we're taking that away from them,"said Laura Santoro,a nurse from New Milford,Conn.,whose 7-year-old son,Johnny,is a second grader at Northville Elementary School there.
Ms.Santoro said that her son would dress as Capt.Jack Sparrow, the character played by Johnny Depp in the"Pirates of the Caribbean"movies,at the school's Halloween party, but that he would not be allowed to take a sword-part of a policy that caught her by surprise last Halloween
"I sent my son to school last year dressed as a special force Power Ranger, and he was told that he couldn't take along his red laser blaster, which really surprised me,because the laser is red and made of plastic and lights up,and it could never, ever be mistaken for a real gun,"Ms.Santoro said."I mean, come on,the whole thing is getting really sad."
53.What do you think is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?B
A.To introduce to the public the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes.
B.To state parents'attitudes towards the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes.
C.To tell the public that children should bring any weapons for Halloween costumes.

A.schools should take a cautious approach to Halloween to prevent violence.
B.children are buying real guns in the street and there is always violence now.
C.those parents like to help their children change into their costumes at school.
D.children are learning more about guns from educational issues.
55.Which of the following is probably right according to the passage?B
A.Children could bring any weapons into school five or six years ago.
B.The parents surveyed are those whose children are in elementary schools.
C.Guns are necessary on Halloween for children to express themselves.
D.Jack Sparrow is an actor who at one time acted as a pirate in a movie.
56.What do the underlined words"laser blaster"in the last paragraph refer to?C
A.A kind of costume.
