Life on land probably began about 430 million years ago, though it has existed in the water for perhaps as much as 3,000 million years. When we think of the first thing on land, we probably think of strange animals coming out of the oceans, but in fact no animals could have been living if plants had not been on land first. Plants had to be on land before animals arrived. They supplied the first land animals with the surrounding and food necessity, since they, the plants, are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy.

The first plants to exist out of the water were probably certain kinds of algae(海藻)which were followed by other plants that grew close to the ground and needed water in which to reproduce. Once the move to land had been made, however, evolution(進(jìn)化)took place quickly. By the end of 100 million years, plants had developed their roots(根),and some had got tree-like forms since height was very important in gaining sunlight. About 300 million years ago, much of the world was covered with forests of huge trees. In most ways they were like modern trees. They had roots, leaves, wood, but mostly they had not developed seeds.

The main idea of the first paragraph is ________.

  A. life on land probably began 430 years ago

  B. the first animal on land came from oceans

  C. there wouldn't be animals without plants

  D. plants are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

  A. Algae has existed for more than 430 million years.

  B. It is impossible that algae might be the earliest plant on land.

  C. Plants get food from animals in the oceans.

  D. Evolution began after animals appeared on land.

Plants with roots appeared about ________ million years ago.

  A. 430 B. 300 C. 330 D. 100

According to the passage, ________ appeared earlier than ________.

  A. apples; oranges B. oranges; apples

C. oranges; roses D. algae; wheat

【小題1】C

【小題2】A

【小題3】C

【小題4】D

If you are planning to study in the United States. you need to consider several factors(因素). Everyone has different opinions about the best place to live in. Also, the best places to live in are not always home to the best schools. Finally, many schools specialize in different areas of study. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for example, is a great school for computer science and technology-related fields of study. However, if you want to study oceanography, your interests may be better served by attending school in a place that is on a coastline or near the ocean.

Now I am sure that you know which schools are considered the best in the country. So I will tell you about which states I believe are the best to live in.

California is a nice state. Northern California specifically has very good weather. Los Angeles in southern California is another story though. Life in L. A. is full of excitement and fast, and sometimes dangerous. As for me. I enjoyed the time I spent in Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland and these states have a lot of history and culture: The weather is not as perfect as in California, but it is still quite nice. My favorite area of America is the Midwest. Middle America, I think, is home to the true American sense of values. In additon, there are many good universities there.

Also, you need to think about your likes and dislikes and then research the various states. You like sunshine and hate snow? Then you probably won't like the Midwest or even the Northeast. Open space, nature and peace and quiet? Then you probably should stay away from America's larger cities. Are you interested in government? Then Washington D. C. is the only place for you. Whatever you decide, put some thought into it. The place where you live could be the difference between a great study abroad experience and a state of great suffering on earth.

(1)From the first paragraph we can conclude that in the USA ________.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)ll colleges and universities lie in big cities

B.a(chǎn)ll colleges and universities lie in beautiful places

C.famous colleges and universities lie in nice places

D.famous colleges and universities may not lie in nice places

(2)What should be considered first if you want to study in the USA? ________

[ ]

A.The climate.
B.The scenery.
C.Studying conditions.
D.Living conditions.

(3)From the third paragraph we can find that California is ________.

B.the worst place to live in
C.a(chǎn) state with different climates
D.a(chǎn) small state in the USA

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

When l was learning calligraphy(書法)my teacher told me a story.

A calligrapher taught handwriting. One of his students who often practiced handwriting with old sheets of newspaper complained that he made very little progress though he had learned it with the calligrapher for a long time. His teacher said to him, “Try to use the best paper.Maybe you'll write better.”

The student did as he was told.It really worked. He made headway not long afterwards and felt curious. He asked his teacher about the reason. The calligrapher answered, “When you used old newspaper to practice handwriting, you would think you were writing a draft. It didn't matter if you wrote badly as old newspaper was plenty in supply. In that case you wouldn't pay much attention to it.Now you use the best paper and you'll treasure it.Each time you write you feel strongly about the rarity of chances and you'll devote to it with all your heart and soul; you'll do the handwriting much more attentively than practicing.Of course you’ve made rapid progress.”

Indeed, we spend our ordinary days just as they are worthless “old newspaper”.We don't care if we scrawl and waste it, thinking that it will come endlessly-the“old newspaper”is inexhaustible(用不完的).In such a mood we may each day pass by opportunities but fail to catch any of them.

Life is not a military exercise but an actual war in which real weapons are used.In everyday life there's no chance for us to draft. That's because what we call “draft” actually is the answer sheet we write that cannot be changed.

Every day of our life is something new.Let us take every day as a sheet of the best paper.

the student would practice more carefully on the best paper

B.

it was comfortable to write on the best paper

[ ]

A.

the student finally gave up

B.

old newspaper is not useful

(3)

[ ]

A.

What teachers say is always true.

閱讀理解,閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

In America, Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort:brilliant beaches, a lively boardwalk, plenty of restaurants and nightspots, and amusement rides sure to appeal to kids. Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the off-season, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.

Meanwhile, some safety tips should be followed, enjoying the happiness and excitement the beach offers.

The number l safety tip concerns ocean safety:pay attention to Flag conditions posted on the lifeguard stands.Lifeguards post a red flag to warn when the ocean water is dangerous.Take them seriously! Tourists from land-locked regions are particularly easily attracted by the magic of the waves. However, a calm ocean can become risky without warning.Make sure you swim near a lifeguard.Swimming without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards.

Never swim alone. Many drownings involve single swimmers. When you swim with someone else, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to get help, including signaling for assistance from others.

Don't fight the current. The facts show that some 80% of rescues by lifeguards at ocean beaches are caused by currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of a beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. If you are caught in a rip current, don't fight it by trying to swim directly to shore.Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will help bring you to safety.

S,,o il is with the telephone calls made after 11:00 l)m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think that it's a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

In racial life, time plays a very important part. Ill the USA guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party reaches them only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time is not the same in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings begin to exist between people from different cultures that treat time differently; being on time is valued highly in American life, for example.
