Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isn’t stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022 and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet.

“Everything we need to go to Mars exists,” said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. “We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the settlement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists.” Yet the four astronauts chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars One’s thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. The biggest road block could be the mission's huge cost ($6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet.

Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to Mars. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars.

“It’s even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars,” said Adam Baker, senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. “The size of the rockets you’d need to do this would be absolutely colossal.”

1.According to Project Mars One, humans could send four people to Mars within the next ________years.

A.seven B.eight C.ten D.six

2.According to Bas Lansdorp, which of the following is NOT TRUE?

A.Robots are prepared for the settlement for humans.

B.He could not come up with the fund for Mars One.

C.We humans have the rockets to send people to Mars.

D.The equipment is ready for humans to land on Mars.

3.The word “colossal” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ___________.

A.very large B.very small

Hybrid cars (混合動力車) are cars that run on petrol and electricity. They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery (電池) electric motor to provide electric power.

There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic light, keeping only the electric engine running.

Conventional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating. Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less petrol. Another way that fuel consumption is cut is by a system of "regenerative (再生的) braking". The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.

In 1928 Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first mass-produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999. As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don't have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.

1. Hybrid cars consume less energy than conventional cars because hybrid cars _____.

A. have large engines to deal with accelerating

B. have conventional brakes to slow down the car

C. have electric power to assist when needed

D. have no energy consumption when stopping

2. In regenerative braking, _____.

A. energy wasted in conventional cars is stored in the battery

B. the conventional brakes are used to slow down the car

C. the battery charges itself when the car is accelerating

D. the petrol engine is usually turned off automatically

3.From the last paragraph we can learn that Hybrid cars ____.

A. were first available in the USA

B. will gain more popularity

C. free their owners from tax

D. are free to park anywhere in the city

4. The main purpose of this text is to_____.

A. show haw hybrid cars slow down

B. encourage people to buy hybrid cars

C. inform people a kind of energy-saving cars

D. explain why hybrid cars use less energy

One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me. "What’s a colander(漏勺)? " he asked.

I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.

As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, "What’s for dinner?" So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (餡餅皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.

I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive— but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. "I appreciate what you do as a mom," he told me one day. Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子氣概的) about being helpless.

Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man. I’m glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter-in-law.

1.Why was the author shocked at her son’s response?

A. Because he was not well behaved.

B. Because he refused to help with dinner.

C. Because he didn’t know the common kitchen tools.

D. Because he was very curious about kitchen tools.

2.In the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to _______.

A. building up children’s confidence

B. telling kids what is right and wrong

C. preparing children for their future life

D. making children live a hard life

3. After learning to do housework, Ray _______.

A. fell in love with sewing

B. did other work in the house

C. began to be more hardworking

D. acknowledged his mother’s efforts

4. We can infer from the text that Ray _______.

A. made great progress in cooking.

B. always thought housework interesting.

C. preferred sewing to cooking.

D. was unwilling to learn cooking at first.

5.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Useful education for boys

B. The importance of housework

C. Boys should be involved in housework.

D. Cooking and sewing make boys masculine.
