Mark Twain

　　Mark Twain(whose real name was Samuel Clemens)was born in Missouri and grew up close to the banks of the Mississippi River．Clemens started out as a printer, setting type in Iowa, New York City, Philadelphia, and other cities．Clemens then turned to piloting a steamboat on the Mississippi River until the American Civil War．

In 1861, Clemens served briefly as a soldier in the Confederate(聯(lián)盟)army．Later that year, Clemens moved to Nevada and began writing articles as a newspaper reporter．

　　In 1863, Clemens began signing his articles with the pseudonym(筆名)Mark Twain．In 1865, Twain finished his first story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”．which became an instant hit．

　　In 1870, Twain married Olivia Langdon, and they later moved to Hartford, Connecticut．Some famous writings followed, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876), A Tramp Abroad(1880), The Prince and the Pauper(1882), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court(1889)．

　　Twain's masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1884)remains an icon(偶像)of American literature．

　　Later works include Puddn'head Wilson(1894), Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc(1896), and the short story“The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg”(1899)．

　　In his later years, Twain became a celebrity, becoming known for wearing white suits wherever he went．

　　Although known primarily as a humorist during his life, scholars now regard his work as some of the best and most authentic(可信的)in American literature．His portraits of pre-civil war America, and his use of spoken language in his novels dominate(占優(yōu)勢)Twain's legacy(遺產(chǎn))．

　　Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

　　The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1894)was a pinnacle in Twain's career－not only as author, but as critic(批評(píng)家)．In that book, Twain had attacked racism with irony．In the following years, he spoke out on themes of morality(道德)，religion, and politics while still, somehow, eliciting(引起)laughter．

　　After the Spanish-American War(1898), Twain became an ardent(激烈的)anti-imperialist(抗擊帝國主義者)；he was especially critical of Belgium's role in the Congo(剛果)and the policy of the United States in the Philippines．Twain was not always funny, and not always well received, but, he was always repeated．By the close of his career, the New York Times estimated that Twain was quoted(引用)in common conversation more often than any other American, including Ben Franklin and Abe Lincoln．Ernest Hemingway(海明威)stated what generations of readers were convinced(確信)of, that“All modern American literature comes from on book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn．American writing comes from that．There is nothing before．There has been nothing as good since．”

                               Mark Twain tells a boy’s story in The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn. Huck is a poor child, without a mother or home. His father drinks too much alcohol and always beats him.

Huck’s situation has freed him from the restriction of society. He explores in the woods and goes fishing. He stays out all night and does not go to school. He smokes.

Huck runs away from home. He meets Jim, a black man who has escaped from slavery(奴隸制). They travel together on a raft(木筏) made of wood down the Mississippi River.

Mark twain started writing “Huckleberry Finn” as a children’s story. But it soon became serious. The story tells about the social evil of slavery, seen through the eyes of an innocent child. Huck’s ideas about people were formed by the white society in which he lived. So, at first, he does not question slavery. Huck knows that important people believe slavery is natural, the law of God. So, he thinks it is his duty to tell Jim’s owners where to find him.

Later, Huck comes to understand that Jim is a good man. He finds he cannot carry out his plan to inform Jim’s owners of his whereabouts(下落). Instead, he decides to help Jim escape. He decides to do this, even if God punished him.

     "Mark Twain" was the name used by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) when he wrote
books. His father was a lawyer, but a poor one, who lived at Florida, Missouri. The family was so
poor that Samuel did not receive much teaching. He had to learn all that he could from the people
whom he met. His father died when he was very young, and then there was even less money than
before.
     Many of the men in this part of America worked in the ships on the great River Mississippi, and
he did this himself at one time (1857).
     Where did he find the name "Mark Twain"? It came from the great river itself. It was part of one
of the cries used by men who worked in the ships. When a man called "By the mark twain!" he meant
that the river was "two marks deep" there, that is to say, six feet deep ( "Twain" is an old form of the
work "Two".) Samuel Clemens often heard these words when he was young, and he used them as a
penname all his life.
     During his work on the Mississippi he met travelers of all kinds, and this helped him a great deal
when he started to write. But the number of travelers became smaller when war started in America in
1861. Many of the great ships on the river stopped work. Samuel left then and went to Nevada with
his brother, who was at that time Governor of Nevada. There, near the town of Carson, Samuel
became a gold miner, but he never made much money at the time. He soon saw that life in the gold
mines was not for him. He also tried writing for the newspapers in Nevada, and this seemed more
hopeful. He found that he could write.
     He went to Europe in 1867 and visited France and Italy. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon,
and two years later he was spending nearly all his time writing. Among his books is his own story
(1908).
     He is now always known as Mark Twain, and many people do not even know that his family
name was Clemens. He traveled in America and in England, and went to Oxford in 1907. He was
one of the great American writers of the time, and could make his readers laugh - a thing which few
writers can do. He died in 1910.

     Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this,
he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real
name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain,
his penname.
     Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected
to live through the first winter. But with his mother's care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he

direction of the nearby Mississippi(密西西比河). He was nearly drowned nine times.
     After his father's death, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him

army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short
stories. Afterwards he became a full time writer.
     In 1870, Mark Twain got married. In the years that followed he wrote many books including
Tom Sawyer in 1876, and Huckleberry Finn in 1884, which made him famous, and brought him
great fortune.
     Unfortunately, Mark Twain got into debts in bad investments(投資) and he had to write
large numbers of stories to pay these debts. In 1904, his wife died, and then three of his
children passed away.
     At the age of 70, his hair was completely white. He bought many white suits and neckties.
He wore nothing but white from head to foot until his death on April 21, 1910.
