Wealth is what you accumulate(累積), not what you spend. If you make $1 million a year and spend $1 million, you’re not getting wealthier, you’re just living high.

The most successful accumulators of wealth spend less than they can afford on houses, cars, vacations and entertainment. Why? Because these things offer little or no return. The wealthy would rather put their money into investments(投資) or their businesses. It’s an attitude.

Millionaires understand that when you buy an expensive house, you buy an expensive life-style too.Your property taxes(財(cái)產(chǎn)稅), insurance, and the prices of nearby services tend to be higher.

The rich man’s attitude can also be seen in his car. Many drive old cars. Sam Walton, billionaire founder of the Wal-Mart Store, Inc, drove a pickup truck.

Most millionaires measure success by net worth(凈值),not income. Instead of taking their money home, they put as much as they can into their businesses. Why? Because the government doesn’t tax wealth; it taxes income you bring home for consumption(消費(fèi)).

The person who piles up net worth fastest tends to put every dollar he can into investments, not consumption.

The best wealth-builders pay careful attention to their money and seek professional advice.

The self-made rich develop clear goals for their money. They may wish to retire early,or they may want to leave something to their children. The goals vary, but two things are consistent:they have a goal in mind-- the amount they want to save by age50, perhaps--and they work unceasingly(不斷地)toward that goal.

One thing may surprise you. If you make wealth---not just income--your goal, the expensive house you’ve been dreaming about won’t seem so attractive. You’ll have the attitude.

1.In the author’s opinion, those who spend money on expensive houses and cars_____.

A. will not be taxed by the government

B. live high and have little saved

C. Have accumulated wealth in another sense.

D. can show that they are among rich

2.The rich put their money into business because_______.

A. they are not interested in luxury houses and cars

B. they can get much in return to build their wealth

C. their goal is to develop their company

D. that is the only way to spend money yet not to be taxed by the government

3.The US government doesn’t tax what you spend money on______.

A. cars B. houses C. boats D. Stock(股票)

4.To become wealthy, one should______.

A. work hard unceasingly

B. seek as much income as he can

C. stick to the way he lives

When was the last time someone unexpectedly did something nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It’s happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.

A few years ago, I was dining in a restaurant with a friend who kept talking about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn’t my friend’s talks that made me suffer. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship. I could have burst into tears right there at the table.

When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didn’t have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man I saw out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a beer, and stayed for maybe ten minutes. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman in white paid for you.” It felt like an angel was saying, “I see you, honey. It’s going to be okay.”

Just last year, I was running a half?marathon. With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting the wall”. I thought I couldn’t move another inch. Out of nowhere, a stranger came up to me and said, “What’s your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let’s go! Come on! It’s just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn’t even supposed to be in the race that day.

I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need. Do you have any experiences like these?

1.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.The kindness of strangers

B.Valuable friendship

C.Two special experiences

D.Helping others is worthwhile

2.According to the passage, the man in white ________.

A.was the author’s friend

B.had a big meal in the restaurant

C.was generous and kind?hearted

D.enjoyed making fun of others

3.The underlined expression in the passage means “________”.

A.being hurt by the wall B.winning the game

C.taking a deep breath D.running out of energy

4.Who is the stranger in the marathon race?

A. the writer’s friend

B. the winner of the race

C. an athlete in the race

D. a stranger passing by
