Yesterday I was fortunate enough to find one more person in our world who is kind and caring. It was about 11:00 p.m.   16   my telephone rang. The caller ID showed the number of a Best Western Hotel.   17  , I would ignore this type of call. For some reason,   18  , I went ahead and answered.

The man on the other end asked if I knew Samual K. I   19  , as he is my 91 – year – old grandfather. Still not   20   why I was the one that had been called, the caller went on to tell me that I was the only   21   listed in the phone book. He said his name was Mason and that he was the   22   at the Best Western Hotel. The   23   was that grandpa had no money with him, and that he couldn’t   24   any phone numbers, so Mason called all over the state trying to get help.

Grandpa told me that he just wanted me to tell Mason that he is a (n)   25   guy and would pay the money once he got home. But the man in charge there was   26   because my grandfather seemed to be   27  . He had been going somewhere else when he got on the wrong bus and   28   100 miles from home.

Not wanting to turn him away and not wanting the police to   29   him to the police station, Mason,   30   any normal duty, not only took the time to   31   me, but also charged just $ 39 so that grandpa could   32   safely and comfortably overnight. (The rooms normally rent for about $ 140!) Besides, he had the staff of that hotel all   33   him until my uncle was able to drive the 100 miles to pick him up!

So, it’s just one more piece of   34   that proves that there are still good people out there; wherever you go, there is always one who   35  .

It seems that the Englishmen just cannot live without sports of some kind. A famous French humourist once said that this is because the English insist on behaving like children all their lives. Wherever you go in this country, you will see both children and grown-ups knocking a ball about with a stick or something, as if in Britain men shall always remain boys and women girls! Still, it can never be bad to get exercise, can it?
Taking all amateur (業(yè)余) and professional sports in Britain into consideration, there can be no doubt that football is at the top of the list. It is called soccer in the United States. The game originated (起源于) in Britain and was played in the Middle Ages or even earlier, though as an organized game, or "association football", it dates only from the beginning of the 19th century.
The next is rugby, which is called "football" in the United States. It is a kind of football played by two teams of fifteen players than eleven. In rugby, an oval-shaped ball is used which can be handled as well as kicked. It is a pretty rough game.
In summer, cricket is the most popular sport. In fact, it has sometimes been called the English national game. Most foreigners find the game rather slow or even boring, but it enjoys great popularity among the British.
Tennis rates high on the list, too. It was introduced into England from France in the 15th century, but it was from England that it spread to practically every country in the world Table tennis, or "ping-pong", surely is not played on a great scale as it is in China or Japan. Basketball and volleyball were introduced into Britain during the late 19th century from America and are gaining popularity. Horse-back riding, swimming, rowing and golf all attract a lot of people.
41.The main purpose of Paragraph 1 is to tell us that the English ___________.
A.a(chǎn)re all sports lovers           B.behave like children
C.like to kick a ball around       D.can remain young all their lives
42.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true about football and rugby?
A.They differ in the shape of the ball.
B.They are played by different numbers of players.
  C.They both can be handled.
  D.They both can be kicked.
43.The game that was never played in Britain until the late 19th century is _________.
  A.basketball    B.tennis    C.rugby   D.football

In the computer age, most of us take a broadband(寬帶)Internet connection for granted. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those in the early days. Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files(檔案文件)download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger too.

There’s a catch, of course: You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.

Technology experts often talk about the “l(fā)ast mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs(郊區(qū)), it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely (稀疏地) populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense.

But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere.

Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables (光纖電纜) promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.

Still, the “l(fā)ast mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication (跡象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.

1.The underlined part “a catch” (in Paragraph 2) probably means “_____”.

A.a(chǎn) rare challenge                        B.a(chǎn) desirable plan

C.a(chǎn)n efficient device                      D.a(chǎn) hidden problem

2.What can we know from the third paragraph?

A.Internet connection has not been popular in most cities.

B.Internet service providers care about rural(農(nóng)村的)customers.

C.Computer is popular in developing countries.

D.It is hard to bring Internet access to users in remote areas.

3.Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that technological advancements _____.

A.make TV and telephone available everywhere

B.bring great change to people’s everyday life

C.make it possible for more people to use the Internet

D.bring faster Internet connections to users

4.What may eventually settle the “l(fā)ast mile” problem?

A.The broadband connection’s getting faster.

B.More and more Internet users.

C.more and more Internet connections.

D.The rapid progress in cell phone technology.
