4.West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre in London,or sometimes more specifically for shows staged in the large theatres of London's"Theatreland".Along with New York's Broadway Theatre,West End theatre is usually considered to represent the highest level of theatre in the English speaking world.Seeing a West End show is a common tourist activity in London.
Total attendances broke the 12million in 2002,and in May and June 2005.The Times reported that this record might be broken in 2005.Factors behind high ticket sales in the first half of 2005included new hit musicals such as Billy Elliot,the Producers and Mary Poppins and the high number of film stars appearing.Since the late 1990s there has been an increase in the number of American actors on the London stage.
London's main theatre district is located in the heart of the West End of the city centre.Renowned theatre streets include Drury Lane,Shaftesbury Avenue,and the Strand.This area contains approximately forty large theatres and is often referred to Theatreland.The works staged are mainly musicals,classic or plays,and comedy performances.
Most of the theaters in"Theatreland"are late Victorian of Edwardian,and they are privately owned.Most of them have their own characteristics with a splendid past.On the other hand,present audience will find them not comfortable as the leg room of the seat is often cramped (people were smaller a hundred years ago) and audience facilities such as bars and restrooms are often much smaller than those in modern theatres.The protected status of the buildings and their confined urban locations,combined with financial limit,mean that it is very difficult to make through improvements to the level of comfort offered.In 2004,it was estimated that an investment of£250million was required for modernization,and the theatre owners failed to request a lower tax to help them meet the costs.

12.If you need to spend time on the road,it's important to find ways to keep safe on your feet.Don't suppose it's your right of way.Yes,you might be crossing at the right place,at the right time,within the crosswalk area,but you are still exposed to danger.It could be a distracted driver,or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules,so you could still get hurt.You can be in the right legally,but that won't be much help when you're in the hospital.
Follow pedestrian signals.Just as drivers aren't supposed to speed up to beat a light when crossing through an intersection,pedestrians need to take the same care when obeying their own signals.If the hand is flashing and the countdown is into single digits (數(shù)字),stay where you are.Trying to outrun the flashing hand is unsafe,especially as cars try to clear the intersection before the light turns red.
Give drivers enough time to stop when crossing.Don't suppose that drivers will jam on their brakes when you hit the crosswalk signals.Some provinces,such as Alberta,issue (發(fā)出)a ticket if you don't give drivers enough time to brake.
Cross quickly.Once you've followed all of the other rules,and it is safe to cross the street,don't then just wander along in front of six lanes (車道)of traffic.There's no need to run or jog,but respect the drivers who respected you enough to stop for you.

19.I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free.But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed.No problem,I thought:we'll buy another.But the insurance payout didn't even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car-I worked out that,with the loan (貸款) we'd need plus petrol,insurance,parking permits and tax,we would make a payment as much as£600a month.
And that's when I had my fancy idea.Why not just give up having a car at all?I live in London.We have a railway station behind our house,a tube station 10minutes'walk away,and a bus stop at the end of the street.A new car club had just opened in our area,and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby.If any family in Britain could live without a car,I reasoned,then surely we were that family.
But my new car-free idea,sadly,wasn't shared by my family.My teenage daughters were horrified.What would their friends think about our family being"too poor to afford a car"?(I wasn't that bothered what they thought,and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)
My friends,too,were astonished at our plan.What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital?(an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events?(buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas,before saying they were sure I'd soon realize that a car was a necessity.
Eight months on,I wonder whether we'll ever own a car again.The idea that you"have to"own a car,especially if you live in a city,is all in the mind.I live-and many other citizens do too-in a place that has never been better served by public transport,and yet car ownership has never been higher.We worry about rising car costs,but we'd be better off asking something much more basic:do I really need a car?Certainly the answer is no,and I'm a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

A.most families chose to go car-free
B.he was hurt in a terrible car accident

A.Argue against it.
B.Take their advice.
C.Think it over.
D.Leave it alone.
62.What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?C
A.Life cannot go without a car.
B.Life without a car is a little bit hard.
C.His life gets improved without a car.
D.A car-free life does not suit everyone.

4.Can people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson?Perhaps yes.Scientists have found the gene that determines skin color.
The gene comes in two versions,one of which is found in 99percent of Europeans.The other is found in 93to 100percent of Africans,researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.
Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebra-fish(斑馬魚(yú)) to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish.As with humans,zebra-fish skin color is determined by pigment cells,which contain melanin (黑色素).The number,size and darkness of melanin per pigment cell determine skin color.
It appears that,like the golden zebra-fish,light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (變異) in the gene for melanin production.This results in less pigmented skin.
However,Keith Cheng,leader of the research team,points out that the mutation is different in human and zebra-fish genes.
Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太陽(yáng)光紫外線),which can cause skin cancer.
But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes,they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D.So the related gene changes,according to Cheng.
Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans,so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng.
The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer.It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.

57.It can be inferred from the passage thatC.
A.the new discovery couldn't help to find medical treatments for skin cancer.
B.Europeans and Africans have the same gene.
C.nowadays people who want to change their skin color have to suffer a lot from the damage caused by the chemical treatment.
D.there are two kinds of genes.
58.Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra-fish in order toA.
A.prove the humans'skin color is determined by the pigment gene.
B.find the different genes of humans'.
C.find out the reason why the Africans'skin color is dark.
D.find out the ways of changing people's skin color.
59.The reason why Europeans are light-skinned is probably thatB.
A.they are born light-skinned people.
B.light-skinned Europeans have mutation in the gene for melanin production.
C.they have fewer activities outside.
D.they pay much attention to protecting their skin.
60.The passage mainly tells us thatD.
A.people can not change their skin color without any pain.
B.the new discovery could lead to research into ways to change skin color safely.
C.pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he liked.
D.scientists have found out that people's skin color is determined by the gene.
