When I was little, I always wanted a luxurious house. That was my idea to be successful. I took all the classes with full carefulness and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this wonderful future.

Then in the tenth grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.

After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.

Enjoying life's precious quirks(偶發(fā)事件) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn't content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.

I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.

13.On a bright,warm July afternoon,Mac Hollan,a primary school teacher,was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends.One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair,but they had encouraged Mac to carry on,and they would catch up with him soon.As Mac pedaled (騎行) along alone,he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home.He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him."Man,that's a big dog!"he thought.But when he looked to the side,he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all,but a wolf,quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped.He found out his can of hear spray.With one hand on the bars,he fired the spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud enveloped the animal,and to Mac's relief,it fell back,shaking its head.But a minute later,it was by his side again.Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike,tearing open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a second time,and again,it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追趕).
Mac was pedaling hard now.He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down.He saw a steep uphill climb before him.He knew that  once he hit the hill,he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment,Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska.They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road.A bit later,they spotted what they,too,assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike.As they got closer,they realized that the dog was a wolf.Mac heard a large vehicle behind him.He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast,just a dozen yards away now.
注意:
1.所續(xù)寫短文的詞數(shù)應為150左右;

A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived."Thank godness!Where did you go?"Mac held his two friends tightly in arms."I'm happy to see you again,my friend.Inoticed a big dog running on the road when I was repairing my bike. And then we realized thatit was a wolf,so we kept hiding ourselves until it went away.""Oh,my god, without these two gentlemen's help,I would be the dinner of the wolf."Finally, though tired, they continued their way and reached Alaska, safe and sound.(高分句型三) What an unforgettable experience they shared!.

13.Winter is the time of year when people feel very blessed. This isn't becau se people feel thankful for the cold weather, nor because the important festivals---Christmas or Spring Festival---offer an excuse to celebrate. In fact,"Bless you!"is a common response if someone sneezes,a symptom(癥狀)of catching a cold or the flu.
Colds and the flu are the most common illnesses of autumn and winter as the weather gets colder.Viruses cause them.If you get one you will feel annoyed, but it is not usually serious. The flu is spread from person to person when we come into contact with a person with the virus. We get the virus on our hands and then we touch our noses and our mouths. We can pass on the flu before we realize we have it.You can infect(傳染) others one day before symptoms develop and for up to five days after becoming sick.
Getting a flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the illness.Even if your body has built up antibodies(抗體)for one kind of flu.The vaccine(疫苗)is only effective for one year and viruses are different from year to year,so it is necessary to get a flu vaccination every year. The best time to get the vaccination is October or November.Besides, there are other ways to reduce your chance of getting a flu.Wash your hands.Get enough rest.Eat garlic regularly.Don't let stress control you.Exercise regularly.

14.People are being lured (引誘)onto Facebook with the promise of a fun,free service without realizing they're paying for it by giving up large amounts of personal information.Facebook then attempts to make money by selling their data to advertisers that want to send targeted messages.
Most Facebook users don't realize this is happening.Even if they know what the company is up to,they still have no idea what they're paying for Facebook because people don't really know what their personal data is worth.
The biggest problem,however,is that the company keeps changing the rules.Early on,you keep everything private.That was the great thing about facebook-you could create your own little private network.Last year,the company changed its privacy rules so that many things-your city,your photo,your friends'names-were set,by default (默認)to be shared with everyone on the Internet.
According to Facebook's vice-president Elliot Schrage,the company is simply making changes to improve its service,and if people don't share information,they have a"less satisfying experience".
Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money.Its original business model,which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page,totally failed.Who wants to look at ads when they're online connecting with their friends?
The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington.In April.Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy.He also urged the Federal Trade Commission to set guidelines for social-networking sites."I think the senator rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,"Schrage admits.
I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy,it's only the beginning,which is why I'm considering deactivating(撤銷)my account.Facebook is a handy site,but I'm upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don't know.That's too high a price to pay.

66.What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?C
A.It is a website that sends messages to targeted users.
B.It makes money by putting on advertisements.
C.It profits by selling its users'personal data.
D.It provides loads of information to its users.
67.What does the author say about most Facebook users?B
A.They are reluctant to give up their personal information.
B.They don't know their personal data enriches Facebook.
C.They don't identify themselves when using the website.
D.They care very little about their personal information.
68.Why does Senator Charles Schumer propose?C
A.Setting guidelines for advertising on websites.
B.Banning the sharing of users'personal information.
C.Working out regulations for social-networking sites.
D.Removing ads from all social-networking sites.
69.Why does the author plan to cancel his Facebook account?C
A.He is dissatisfied with its current service.
B.He finds many of its users untrustworthy.
C.He doesn't want his personal data to be used in a wrong way.
D.He is upset by its frequent rule changes.
