【題目】I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.

This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for,Alice, had gone through a difficult time .She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice .In November I was finally able to get her back to her“home”.

Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad.Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy,I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!

On Christmas Eve,I gave her a surprise by asking if she could like to go to a candlelight service at church that night

Instead of taking her to my church,I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in.Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.

Recently I have read an article in a magazine. It was about the mother who was worried about her son just because of he always kept his hair long. The mother thought that was not right, but the son felt there was nothing unusually about it. Different generations have different opinion on the same thing. That is what is meaning by "the generation gap". We can see them in our daily lives. Most of our parents like listening to old songs when young people prefer pop songs. Every time my father finds me listen to rock music, he always shouted, "Shut it off. It's awful!" How can we deal the generation gap?

【題目】There are many traditions around the holidays. “Holiday traditions” are things that people do every year during a holiday such as Christmas or Thanksgiving. At Christmas, for example, many people put up a Christmas tree or Christmas lights. These are Christmas traditions that have been going on for many years. But there is a “new” Christmas tradition that has become very popular: the TV firelog, a TV channel that shows nothing but a large log fire, blazing in a fireplace.

By running the firelog during the holidays, everyone could go home for a few days and enjoy a bit of time off.

At that time, it was only broadcast to people in Edmonton but today it reaches people across Canada and beyond. This year, the Shaw firelog was updated. It is pretty high tech. Although it’s still really just a fire log that has been filmed, it has its own Twitter account (@ShawFireLog), its own Facebook page and it even has a computer App so you can see the burning log on a smartphone or a tablet. 【題目】While most teachers enjoy the summer break from work, other teachers try to find part-time work during that time. If you’re one of those teachers who are finding part-time work during the summer, writing for children might be the right job you’re looking for.

During the school year, you’re very familiar with children in your classroom. That means you know what children think about, how they talk and how they act. If you read stories and books for children with your students during the school year, you also know the kinds of story that children are fond of.

As a teacher, you can go to the school library and find out what kinds of books students are most interested in. Also, what kinds of books seem to be in short supply? Use this information to create stories and novels.

If you continue writing for children during the school year, you won’t have enough time to write as much while you’re teaching, but you can probably manage to work on at least one short story for children each month. Even if you don’t finish these pieces during the school year, when school ends for the summer you will have lots of writing projects to finish and hand in to editors (編輯).

Recently, many teachers have turned to writing for children as a part-time job. If you enjoy writing as much as you enjoy teaching, then writing for children might be the second job for you, too.

【題目】Time and how we experience it have always puzzled us. Physicists have created fascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum(鐘擺)and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the difference remarked, “When you sit with a nice girl for two hours it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove, a minute seems like two hours.”

Psychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example, a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beach. Since most of us spend fewer days at the beach and more at the office as we age, an increase in structured tune could well be to blame for why time seems to speed up as we grow older.

Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly. Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere we’ve never been before. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when we’ll arrive, we experience the trip as lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The unfamiliarity of the journey has become routine. Thus taking a different route on occasion can often help slow the clock.

When days become as identical as beads(小珠子)on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day. To fight this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day—to stop time. Learning something new is one of the ways to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seems so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. For many of us, learning ends when we leave school, but this doesn’t have to be.

1The quotation(引用語(yǔ)) in the first paragraph is used to indicate ______.

A. physical time is different from psychological time

B. time should not be measured by a pendulum

C. psychological time is quite puzzling

D. physical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time

2Why do units of time fly faster as we grow older?

A. Our sense of time changes.

B. We spend less time at the beach.

C. More time is structured and scheduled.

D. Time is structured with too many appointments.

3What is the main idea of the passage?

A. It gives various explanations about time.

B. It explains why time flies fast and how to slow it down psychologically.

C. It shows the different ideas of physicists and psychologists on time.

D. It describes how we experience time psychologically.
