We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself? Not very well probably, especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence of films, but recently some programs on television showed how people can defend themselves without guns. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the ground. How? She knew Judo.
Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called, means "muscle science" in Japanese. The student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a number of "falls", "holds" and "throws". Someone who does not know judo cannot defend himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is stronger than you. You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall without hurting themselves! Being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is another. In judo, you use the other person's body to help you. You "throw" him to the ground and "hold" him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice, but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to be able to defend yourself.

The earth's biosphere (the surface layer of the planet and the surrounding atmosphere) provides the land, air, water, and energy necessary to sustain life. This life-support system is a complex, interdependent one in which energy from the sun is changed into food for humans. The entire system depends on the sun, reasonably moderate temperature, and enough supplies of oxygen, pure water, and fertile soil.

Since the earth's creation millions of years ago, the ecosystem has worked as an interdependent system relatively undisturbed by outside forces. But recently, especially since the Industrial Revolution, human beings have begun to disturb the balance of nature. Natural resources have been severely depleted (消耗) (forests have been destroyed, fertile land worn away, water polluted, and minerals used up), and the life-support system of air, water, and land has been poisoned by a variety of waste products and chemicals.

The degree of these problems was noted in a report by the U.N. Developing Council on Environmental Quality. This report predicted that if present trends continue, the world will be more crowded and polluted and less stable ecologically and politically than the world we live in now.

The twin problems of resource shortages and pollution are caused by three social forces.  First, the tremendous increase in population growth constantly increases the demand for food, energy, and other products. As the current population continues to increase, the stress on an already overburdened environment will be increased.A second source of the problem is the concentration of people in urban areas, where the ecosystem simply cannot absorb their waste products. Finally, environmental problems are worsened as more and more nations move toward modem development: an increased reliance on modern technology. As these nations become more technological, they will consume more energy, deplete more natural resources, and create more waste products than the biosphere can absorb.

The life-support system is composed of _____.

A.a(chǎn)ir, water and land   B.the earth, the sun and energy

C.food, land and energy     D.food, energy and the sun

The life-support system _____.

A.change energy from the sun into food for humans

B.depends on the sun for enough supplies of air, water and land

C.exists in the surface layer of the earth and the surrounding atmosphere

D.is a complex but independent system

The life-support system has been badly damaged by _____.

       A.natural forces   B.human activities  C.social movements      D.political changes

The passage mainly talks about _____.

A.the effects of Industrial Revolution on human beings

B.the importance of life-support system to human beings

C.the significance of balance of nature

D.the destruction of life-support system and its causes

In Canada it is   37   for people to have pets. Many people have dogs. Many others have cats and there are people who keep fish, birds or rabbits. Some keep what we call exotic pets. Cats are cutest, of course, when they are small kittens but a kitten is   43   for a longer time than we may have left.
I think having a pet is very good for a number of reasons. It helps to teach children how to look after a   44   creature, makes them realize that animals have feelings just like we do and that, in many ways, we depend on each other. For older people like me an animal is a   45   and a comfort to have around, a pet, properly treated, returns the favor by   46   unconditional love. Wouldn’t this world be a great place if people could learn how to do that.

讀寫任務(wù)(共1小題;滿分25分)

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

Nowadays, we live in a global village, and many difficulties will arise if we can’t express ourselves fluently in English.

In spite of my awareness of its importance, I seldom find chances to practice and improve my oral English. So, I am still very weak with regard to this respect(方面). One reason is that my pronunciation and intonation aren’t good enough. The other is that I am so shy that I am always too nervous to find other exact words to express my ideas and feelings. As a result the best way for me to do is to remain silent when others are practicing and making great progress in their oral English every day.

Now I am attaching much more importance to oral English and I have made up my mind to seize every opportunity to practice. I begin to participate in activities, such as going to “English Corners”, talking in English with my classmates and with native speakers. As the Chinese saying goes, “Nothing is difficult in the world if you really put your heart into it.” If I can build up my confidence, if I am not afraid of losing face any more, if I really work hard at it, I am sure my oral English will be excellent some day

What does it mean to day that we live in world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam take priority(優(yōu)先)over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic interest may have other choices.

In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence what others believe and how they behave. We may not always prevail(占優(yōu)勢(shì))--other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merits of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.

Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome approach to their lives or as a control. In contrast, we believe that persuasion is inevitable--to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be moral or immoral, selfless or selfish, inspiring or discouraging. Persuaders may enlighten our minds or make us hurt. Moral persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, an essential part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.

Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is a need to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the basic principle of the American political system.

1.What’s the author’s attitude towards persuasion?

A.Critical.                             B.Uninterested.        C.Supportive.             D.Neutral.

2.The passage states that some people are against persuasion because they think it is       .

A.a(chǎn)n unwelcome influence                               B.difficult to do well

C.not trustworthy at all                                    D.never successful

3.We can conclude from the passage that persuasion means         .

A.getting people to act according to your will

B.exercising power over other people

C.making use of your past wise experience

D.getting other people to consider your reasonable points of view.

4.According to the passage, we can infer that            .

A.we can learn how to persuade in school

B.only society can benefit from persuasion

C.persuasion plays an important role in America

D.persuasion is considered to be an inborn ability
