One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.

We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,

“May I get you something?”

“A coffee would be nice.”

Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,

“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?”

“Who?”

“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”

I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!

My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and no matter another human being with kindness and sincerity.

Twelve years ago, Danny called me from a dark, damp subway station. “A baby!” he shouted. “Get down here, and flag down a police car or something.” By nature, Danny is a remarkably calm person, so when I felt his heart pounding through the phone line, I ran.

When I got to the subway station, Danny was holding a light-brown-skinned baby, about a day old. The baby had been wrapped in an oversize black sweatshirt and left on the ground in a corner behind the gate.

Three months later, Danny appeared in family court to give an account of finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge asked, “Would you be interested in adopting this baby?” The question stunned everyone in the courtroom, except Danny, who answered, simply, “Yes.”

“But I know it’s not that easy,” he said.

“Well, it can be,” assured the judge before barking out orders to allow me to be a parent-to-be.

My first reaction, when I heard, went something like: “Are you crazy? How could you say yes without consulting me?”

In three years as a couple, we had never discussed adopting a child. I was an ambitious playwright working as a part-time word processor. Danny was a respected yet wildly underpaid social worker. We had a roommate, who slept in our living room, to help pay the rent.

We knew how many challenges couples usually faced when they wanted to adopt. And while Danny had patience and selflessness, I didn’t know how to change a diaper(尿布), let alone nurse a child. I didn’t trust the system and was sure there would be obstacles. Also, I couldn’t handle parenthood. So I promised myself I wouldn’t get attached.

The caretaker held him and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the innocence and hope he represented, I, like Danny, was completely hooked.

1.Why did the author rush to the subway station?

A. Because Danny finally found their long lost son.

B. Because she sensed Danny met something urgent.

C. Because Danny was knocked down by a police car.

D. Because Danny wasn’t a remarkably calm person by nature.

2.How did the author react on hearing Danny’s answer to the judge’s question?

A. Surprised by the question.

B. Crazy to be a parent-to-be.

C. Annoyed at Danny’s decision.

D. Interested in adopting this baby.

3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_________.

A. the author will adopt the baby

B. the caretaker will take the baby away

C. the couple love each other very much

D. the baby will bring hope to the family

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To introduce a story of a poor family.

B. To inform people of how to adopt a baby.

C. To call on people to donate money to them.

D. To show human’s kindness and love by nature.

Some people may think I’m crazy when I say “work is rest”. But that’s the way it is — we need to rest. Without rest, we will die. At a minimum, we won’t have the energy to work.

Nobody forces us to be so stupid about this. We just don’t know how to rest properly. We rest in ways that are not restful, even stressful. Some of our ways of rest interfere with our working energy. Instead of sleep, we go to the movies and clubs, drink or have a smoke with friends. This is because we misunderstand the meaning of “rest”.

We should remember that rest means not working, both physically and mentally. Only then is it real rest. When tired, rest. It’s simple. Actually, dogs and cats are smarter about this than people. People are stupid enough to rest in ways that destroy their capacity to work.

Rest and work always go together. There must be a balance: work during the day and rest at night. When the sun comes up, one has plenty of strength to work well and enjoy it. In other words, rest is a kind of investment, so that one has the strength and energy to continue working. So we need rest to work, recognizing that we can’t have one without the other. Rest is what recharges our batteries. We need enough time to charge up adequately to the tasks we undertake. Thus, we need to rest correctly; otherwise, illness will occur and also can affect the efficiency of our work.

Rest can’t be skimped. Without enough rest, good work is impossible. This is why we say that rest is another kind of work.

1.Which of the following is the best rest according to this passage?

A. Sleeping at home.

B. Drinking or having a smoke with friends.

C. Going to the movies and clubs.

D. Playing cards with family members.

2.We can know from this passage that _____.

A. dogs and cats are smarter than we human beings

B. rest can make us work more efficiently

C. it’s not proper to sleep in the daytime for people.

D. rest is more important than work for people

3.The underlined word “skimped” in the last paragraph probably means “______”.

A. added B. connected

C. saved D. developed

4.What is the best title for the text?

A. How to Form the Habit of Sleeping B. Why People Need to Rest

C. Sufficient Rest Leads to Success D. Rest is Another Kind of Work

China dropped its decades-long, one-child policy last year to allow each family to have two children. This change has put 270 million married women of childbearing age in the position of choosing between family and work. The employers also face big challenges as more female workers will have two maternity leaves(產(chǎn)假) for a total of seven to eight months.

In a survey published by classified advertising website Ganji.com, career women who might be considering having a second child were asked what kinds of pressure they might expect. More than 76 percent of the women who were questioned mentioned concerns about the financial burden of raising two children, while more than 71 percent said it would be difficult to balance career and family. In addition, nearly 56 percent said that having a second child would definitely have a negative effect on their career.

Another survey conducted by Chongqing-based human resources website job.cq.qq.com found that over 70 percent of job seekers believe that having a second child would make females less popular in the job market, although two-thirds of the employers said the policy will make no difference in their employment of staff.

Feng Lijuan, s senior expert on human resources at 51 job.com, a leading Chinese job finding platform, said she would not say “there is prejudice against career women.” Feng said Chinese women shoulder more family responsibility. “It is not only about maternity leave; a female employee might only fully get back to work after three to five years after having her first child.”

Wang Yixin, a senior employment adviser, said the positive side is that more companies are trying to attract more talents by providing support to career women. “Different from before, it is not only employers choosing employees. Many talents, including professional career women, also choose employers.” said Wang. “According to our survey, many large companies are very open to their employees’ choice of having a second child.”

①Financial burden of raising two children

②Fewer opportunities to get a pay rise

③Negative effects on their career

④Difficulty in balancing career and family

Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship.

However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略,好斗) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission(順從).

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.

What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other’s body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.

The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don’t get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

1.The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. early B. mostly

C. quickly D. smoothly

2.Some cats and dogs may fight when ________.

A. they are cold to each other

B. they look away from each other

C. they are introduced at an early age

D. they misunderstand each other’s body languages

3.It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ________.

A. have common interests

B. are less different than was thought

C. have a common body language

D. are not so smart as was expected

4.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

A. We should learn to get along well with others.

B. We should know more about animals.

C. We should live in peace with animals.

D. We should learn more body languages.

On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun bad been out.The first alert my husband,Jimmy,67,and I,65,got came around 9 p.m.,from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola,Florida, station.

No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us.It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out.The wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor, because the cupboard down there is underneath a brick staircase.

I didn't know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet.I tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place.

As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out.Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere.Suddenly,a three-foot-long tree branch crashed into the door frame. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches.Had we been one step up,it would have hit us.

By the time I reached the cupboard, the tornado had been over us for about a minute.Jimmy pushed me down to the cupboard floor, but he couldn't get inside himself because of the wind.I held Jimmy's arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it.My knees were full of glass, but at that moment,I felt no pain.If I had let go,Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.

All of a sudden,Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies.I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet.In those first quiet moments,I couldn't believe it was over,Jimmy said he'd go outside to check."No,"I said."Don't leave me.Don't leave me."

Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed.Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage.Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.

D. Jimmy didn't fly right out the back of the house.

3.Why didn't the wife feel pain?

4.The author wrote the passage to .
