It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming terrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but a good sense. It takes the most cool-headed (頭腦冷靜的) drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when they are forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behavior of politeness is by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced(用錯(cuò)了地方的) politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in a traffic stream without causing total blockages( 擁堵) that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone(更不用說(shuō)) master the roadman ship ( 公路駕車技能). Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give and take( 互諒互讓) from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

1.The passage mainly talks about______________________.

A. traffic jams B. good manners

C. road politeness D. modern drivers

2.Troubles on the road are often caused by__________________.

A. traffic jams

B. the behavior of the drivers

C. the great speed of modern life

D. terrible road conditions

3.According to the writer, a good driver should___________________.

A. encourage children to cross the road whenever they want to

B. beat back when forced to face rude driving

C. be able to recognize road politeness when he sees it

D. join in a traffic stream quickly however other people feel

4.It is not right for drivers to_________.

A. master the roadmanship

B. join in a traffic stream

C. give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness

D. encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to

A British shopper, Emma Mumford, who was named “the Coupon(優(yōu)惠券) Queen” has spent just £350 on a luxury Christmas for her and her family-but got £2,500 worth of food, drink and presents thanks to coupons and offers.

Ms Mumford is a so-called “extreme couponer” and spends hours hunting out the best deals and bargains. She has been preparing for this Christmas since the end of the last one. Ms Mumford made the huge savings by checking price comparison websites and as a result collected more presents than she needed for Christmas. After sorting out gifts for all of her family, she has even been able to donate £1,000 worth of presents to her local hospital.

“It has been so nice to have Christmas sorted and not having to worry about breaking the bank. I wanted to get high quality presents for my family and show that you can do it without spending a fortune. There is a misconception that everyone who does couponing only gets value products but through my careful shopping I have managed to purchase designer perfumes, a high-end coffee machine.” she explained.

She said “What started as a hobby to help me save money has turned into my life and I am able to run a business helping people save money. I know what it feels like to struggle as my ex-partner had a lot of debt which I took on for him. We were in a poor situation where every penny counted. That’s what really inspired me.”

She has now turned her bargain-hunting addiction into a business where she searches for the best deals and offer tips to the general public through video blogging and her Facebook Page.

The Lost Rules of Etiquette

Etiquette, or good manners, used to be the glue that held society together. 1. Sadly, these days it has mostly gone by the wayside. This list is several best rules of etiquette that have now disappeared.

Opening the Door

In days gone by, a gentleman would always open doors for ladies. 2. This h8s now almost entire-ly disappeared-and it is pot entirely the fault of the men. I have seen women laugh at men for opening a door for them. They seem to be confusing manners with chauvinism(大男子主義).

Writing Thank-You Notes

In days gone by, whenever a person received a gift, they would write a thank-you note as soon as possible. 3. Parents would sit children down after a birthday or Christmas and coach them in their first thank-you note. It is a shame that gift giving has now become a virtual obligation and the idea of a thank-you note would be laughed at.

4.

We seem to have completely lost the concept of correct timing when it comes to parties these days.

5. After all, a party normally has a guest of honor-this is usually the oldest woman present. It was considered extremely rude in the past to leave a party before the guest of honor-and once the guest of honor left, it was a signal to all that they should begin their own preparations to leave.

A. Arriving on Time.

B. Leaving at the Right Time.

C. People leave with various excuses.

D. It enabled people to get on well with each other.

E. This rule was true even if the giver was a relative.

F. It could be the lady they were driving, or a stranger.

G. We've thrown away the concept of a guest of honor at will.
