【題目】Rescuers pulled out an eight-year-old girl alive from the ruins of a Taiwan apartment block on Monday more than 60 hours after it was destroyed by an earthquake, as the mayor of the southern city of Tainan warned the death toll could go beyond 100. The official death toll from the quake rose to 38, with more than 100 people missing.

The girl, named as Lin Su-Chin, was conscious and had been taken to hospital. There were possibly two other people still alive in the destroyed building.

The quake struck at about 4 am on Saturday at the beginning of the Lunar New Year holiday, with almost all the dead found in Tainan’s destroyed Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building. Rescue efforts are focused on the ruins of the 17-story building, where more than 100 people are listed as missing and suspected to be buried deep under the ruins.

Earlier a woman, identified as Tsao Wei-ling, was found alive lying under her dead husband. Their two-year-old son, who was also killed, was found lying nearby. Another survivor, a man named Li Tsung-tian, was pulled out later. Several hours later, Li’s girlfriend was found dead in the rubble. Tsao and Li were both being treated in hospital.

Rescuers continued to climb over the twisted(扭曲的) remain of the building as numb family members stood around, waiting for news of missing relatives. It’s reported that 36 of the 38 dead were from the Wei-guan building, which was built in 1994.

The mayor of Tainan said there needed to be a “general sorting out” of old buildings to make sure they were able to deal with disasters like earthquakes. A better job was also needed in ensuring building quality as well as building management in the near future.

“I’ve changed my mind.I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to his father for Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched everyone’s heart.Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us,we cannot see the stars for a while.

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And,in a strange way,I expect that you will find your father there, too,in your mind and heart.I find that my parents, who died years ago, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive.I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions.I remember that when I became a professor,I was so proud,or rather so pleased with myself that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did,all my mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.

It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care.Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.

I pray silently, sometimes,in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know the death comes to us all,and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on,I’m sure,in the lives of those we love, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

【題目】閱讀理解。

For my grandmother’s 70th birthday,my family and I visited South Korea. While there,I was attentive to Korean high schools and students.

I was surprised by how different Korea’s public high schools are from America’s.Korean high schools can be allgirls, allboys or coed (男女同校的) unlike our standard coed high schools. There are three grades:“go 1(10th)”,“go 2(11th)” and “go 3(12th)”.“Go” is the first syllable of the word “godeunghakkyo”,which, simply translated,is “high school”.

In America, unless you want to go to a private school, you don’t have to take an entrance exam.In Korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools.

Another difference I couldn’t help but notice was the students’ appearance. With very few exceptions, all wear uniforms. A name tag (標牌) with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn.Girl’s skirts can’t be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye(染) your hair or wear accessories (裝飾品) except small earrings. There are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes.

The final difference was the setup of the classes. There may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city.Although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which I think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. There are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. They just have tenminute breaks between subjects. In each class, students are ranked by their grades. This causes strict competition, and Korean students do a lot of studying. To help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. One other fact that helped me appreciate living in America is that Koreans have school on Saturdays.Although it’s only a half day,I think I speak for most Americans when I say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a Saturday.

Korea’s public high schools are clearly different from America’s.I had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now I have a clear picture of how different they are.

【1】How many main differences are mentioned between Korea’s public high school and America’s?

A.3. B.4.

C.5. D.6.

【2】It seems that the writer ________.

A.is familiar with the education system of high schools in Korea

B.is fond of Korean students’ appearance

C.prefers the high school life of America to the one of Korea

D.feels it common to have lessons on weekends

【3】What does the underlined word “setup” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.Arrangement. B.Size.

C.Number. D.Outline.

【4】According to the rules, the students of Korea can ________.

A.go to different high schools without exams

B.wear any clothes except uniforms at school

C.attend different classes as they like

D.have different hair styles

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A.B.C和D項中,選出最佳選項。

Americas No.1 Health Problem. So reads the headline of an article published by the American Institute of Stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: “It has been estimated(估計)that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.”

It is no exaggeration(夸張)to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the National Consumers League, “Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”

However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” As a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain.”

The picture is no less bleak in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers across all types of employment sectors. One survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.”

What about Asia? A report issued by a conference held in Tokyo concluded: “Job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” The report observed that “several countries in East Asia, including China and Korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. These countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers’ health.”

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A.B.C和D項中,選出最佳選項。

So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become certain. Christopher Reeve

Recently, for the first time in 5 years I simply went out back, put my cane down, and started walking. I made it 42 yards.

Today I walked 5 miles.

My medical team had said this would be impossible. My brain could no longer send the signals for walking because those nerves in it had been destroyed. Though certainly unintentional, my doctors did take something very important away from me: hope.

A while back, a psychologist pal of mine urged me to try to help myself. I was angry. I said, “They’re four of Boston’s leading neurologists. They all said I’d never get any better.”

“They could have all been wrong.”

“They said there’s nothing I can do! No rehabilitation(復原). No physical therapy(治療). I’m not putting any effort into trying to walk and then be miserable when I fail.”

“Trying is never failure.”

What made me finally try? The answer is simpler than I’d have ever imagined. That day I tried walking on my own, I had simply said to myself, “Why not?”

When I walk I have a Frankenstein-style gait. I get embarrassed so I explain. I met a gal who said, “Stop excusing yourself. Walk proud!” She’s just one of the many who’ve taught me that if I open my heart to acceptance, the world is filled with support teams.

One morning my husband, Bob, said there was a huge present for me in our driveway. He had researched “bicycles for disabled people.” It was a 300 pound cycle for two. The seats were side by side. He could pedal while I sat by him and enjoyed the outdoors again.

Um... did I mention it came assembled with a set of pedals for me too?

Now, hundreds of miles later, after exhaustive hours of pedaling along beautiful bike trails, I only wish that we owned stock in Bengay.

【1】What’s the best title of this passage?

A. Having a tour

B. Realizing an Impossible dream

C. Walking with a cane

D. Suffering from disability

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. My doctor concluded that I can walk again.

B. My brain could no longer send signals.

C. They're four famous doctors in my medical team.

D. My medical team’s conclusion took my hope away.

【3】The author didn’t want to try walking because _______.

A. her doctors said he couldn’t get any better

B. her friend’s words is unbelievable

C. she was miserable when he failed that time

D. trying is never failure

【4】The bicycle Bob found can be _____.

A. a 150 pound cycle for one

B. a bicycle for disabled people

C. a huge present that he sent.

D. of the same size as a normal one.
