Computer programmer David Jones earns £35,000 a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank ready to let him have a credit card (信用卡). Instead, he has been told to wait another two years, until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of his age is finding a job. David’s firm releases (推出) two new games for the fast throwing computer market each month.

But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Even though he earns a lot, he cannot drive a car, take out a mortgage (抵押貸款), or get credit cards. David got his job with the Liverpool-based company four months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels and working for a time in a computer shop. “I got the job because the people who run the firm knew I had already written some programs,” he said. David spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 50 pounds a week. But most of his spare time is spent working.

“Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school,” he said. “But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway.” David added:“I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement is a possibility. You never know when the market might die away.”

1.In what way is David different from people of his age?

A. He often goes out with friends.

B. He lives with his mother.

C. He has a handsome income.

D. He graduated with six O-levels.

2.What is one of the problems that David is facing now?

A. He is too young to get a credit card.

B. He has no time to learn driving.

C. He has very little spare time.

D. He will soon lose his job.

3.Why was David able to get the job in the company?

A. He had done well in all his exams.

B. He had written some computer programs.

C. He was good at playing computer games.

D. He had learnt to use computers at school.

4.Why did David decide to leave school and start working?

A. He received lots of job offers.

B. He was eager to help his mother.

C. He lost interest in school studies.

D. He wanted to earn his own living.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:

I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family

Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.

I am fat because I burn calories slowly

Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陳代謝). If fact, although fat people consume more energy that slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.

Exercise is boring

Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set a distance or time challenge.

No pain, no gain.

Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but when your body adapts to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If you don’t, rest and seek medical advice.

1.What does the author think about being fat?

A.It is the family genes that make people fat.

B.People are fat because they consume too little energy.

C.It is the consequence of people’s unbalanced lifestyle.

D.A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.

2.According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?

A.By taking varied exercise.

B.By choosing simple exercise.

C.By doing regular exercise.

D.By sticking to outdoor exercise.

3.What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?

A.Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.

B.Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.

C.Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal.

D.Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.

4.What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To argue the importance of keeping fit.

B.To prove some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.

C.To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.

D.To inform readers of some misunderstandings about fatness and exercise.

How to Survive Exam Stress

Exam time is one of the most stressful in school, whether it is high school, college or graduate school. Even the best students feel the pressure. The first sign of a problem while preparing for an exam is worry. 1. If we can get rid of worries, or at least control them, then we’re in a much better position to do well on our tests. Take the following steps to survive exam stress and increase your overall performance as a result.

2. What causes you anxiety when you are studying? Too much noise? Then move to a quieter place. Delayed work? Catch up with your studies a couple nights before. That way you can save the final night before the exam to review and get a good night of sleep.

The second way to deal with worry is to replace thoughts. Suppose you wake up at three in the morning and you’re worried about an exam. What do you do? 3. Doing something productive might allow you to sleep better when you finally do go back to bed.

Another way to replace negative thoughts is to do something physically active. Work out. Take a quick walk or a nice run. 4. For example, I might worry about the exam having surprise questions that I’m not prepared to answer. But I can put those thoughts aside by reminding myself that I’ve taken many exams and I’ve handled surprise questions before.

The third option is to treat the symptoms. Keep things in perspective. Think of one final exam that causes you the most anxiety. Now think of the worst thing that could happen. If you’ve prepared, then likely the worst grade you could get is a C. And, if you’ve been applying what we’ve been talking about, then you’ll likely do no worse than a B. 5.

A. How bad is that really?

B. The first is to delete the causes.

C. Another idea is to think positive thoughts.

D. Worry robs us of energy, focus and motivation.

E. How about getting up and studying for an hour?

F. What we should do is to think positively and get rid of it.

G. So we are supposed to make our effort to improve our surroundings.

Dear Smith,

I have a good news for you. All senior three students will take part in a mountain- climbing activity in May 18th, which is intending to help reduce our pressure from study. So I’m writing to invite you to go along.

We plan to gather at the school gate at 8:20, weather permitting. Then they will set off at 8:30, heading for the mountains nearby on feet. After having a good time, we are supposed to go back school for lunch at about 12.

The suggestions are as following. You’d better wear strong and comfortably shoes so that you can enjoy the trip. A bottle of water and some snacks were also necessary in climbing. In addition, you can take with you a camera to get some photos taken.

Look forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Yan

The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the subjects (實(shí)驗(yàn)對(duì)象) read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, they took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When the subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. They also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given (考慮到)the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (過濾) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

1.In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to______.

A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

B. have their blood tested per hour during the trial

C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

D. have their sleep patterns observed all night

2.The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to______.

A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

B. become less energetic the next morning

C. have a lot more melatonin secretion

D. fall asleep more easily after reading

3.The special software recently developed can______.

A. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

C. remove the blue light from your devices completely

D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

4.Which title is the best one for the text?

A. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

B. New software for night e-readers

C. No e-reading in bed before sleep

D. No games on iPad in bed

Being able to count at least ten people as friends makes us happy, but those with five or fewer are likely to be miserable, researchers say.

Their study of hundreds of men and women also found that people who feel satisfied with their lives always have lots of close friends and regularly make new ones.

While it is not clear whether our friends make us happy or we make friends because we are happy, the researchers say it is clear that we should maintain our friendships. Psychologist Richard Tunney said,“Whatever the reason is,actively working on friendships in the same way as to maintain a marriage is a prerequisite(必備條件) to happiness.”

Dr.Tunney,of Nottingham University, quizzed more than 1,700 people about their satisfaction with their lives and the state of their friendships. Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 percent chance of being happy. .

In other words they were more likely to be unhappy than happy.Ten was the first number at which people were more likely to be happy than unhappy. The happiest people were those with dozens of friends, according to the study, which was carried out for the National Lottery(彩票).

For women, this meant having 33 friends;for men,the number was 49. Dr.Tunney said,“People who were extremely satisfied with their lives had twice the number of friends of people who were extremely dissatisfied.” Women tended to have fewer friends than men but formed tighter relationships.

Interestingly, the study found that childhood friends are no more likely to make us happy than people we become close to later in life.Lottery winners, however, have a different opinion on life. They are always happier than others despite spending their time with a small circle of old friends. This could be because they trust people they’ve known for a long time.

1.What’s the best title for this passage?

A.The Secret to Happiness Is to Make New Friends

B.Having at Least 10 Good Friends Makes People Happy

C.Why Most People Like to Make Friends Regularly

D.Men’s and Women’s Friends Are Different

2.Which of the following opinions may Richard Tunney NOT agree with?

A.People with few friends are sure to be unhappy.

B.Our friends can make us happy.

C.Happiness may come from a good marriage life.

D.We may become happier if we have more friends.

3.According to the passage,lottery winners ________.

A.enjoy making new friends

B.make new friends easily

C.like staying with old friends

D.have no time to make friends

4.We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A.it’s enough for one person to have ten friends

B.unhappy people must have few friends

C.childhood friends make people happier than adulthood ones

D.friendships play a major role in people’s life
