We don’t know how different our future will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.

At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet----even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today----we will feel a little lonely.

Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.

Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.

We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as our health will be in a better condition.

Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.

1.Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050?

A. Because the number of people will become much smaller.

B. Because people won’t communicate with each other much often.

C. Because people won’t like making friends with each other.

D. Because there will be less face-to-face communication.

2.According to the passage, which of the following will happen in 2050?

A. It won’t be difficult for people to travel to other planets.

B. The way of spending holidays will be the same as that of today.

C. The relationship between people will be more important than today.

D. Our environment will be much more polluted with a growing number of cars.

3.The underlined word “sanguine” in the last paragraph most probably means ______.

A. disappointed B. optimistic

C. curious D. surprised

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. How people will communicate in the year 2050.

B. What high technology will appear in the year 2050.

C. How people will travel and spend their holiday in the year 2050.

D. What our life will be like in the year 2050.

So the little girl now walked on, her bare feet quite red and blue with the cold. She carried a small bundle of matches in her hand, and a good many more in her tattered dress. No one had bought any of them the live long day; no one had given her a single penny. Trembling with cold and hunger crept she on, the picture of sorrow: poor little child!

The snow-flakes fell on her long, fair hair, which curled in such pretty ringlets over her shoulders; but she thought not of her own beauty, or of the cold. Lights were glimmering through every window, and the savor of roast goose reached her from several houses;it was New Year's eve, and it was of this that she thought.

In a corner formed by two houses, one of which projected beyond the other. She sat down, drawing her little feet close under her, but in vain, she could not warm them. She dared not go home, she had sold no matches, earned not a single penny, and perhaps her father would beat her, besides her home was almost as cold as the street,it was an attic; and although the larger of the many chinks in the roof were stopped up with straw and rags. The wind and snow often penetrated through. Her hands were nearly dead with cold; one little match from her bundle would warm them. Perhaps, if she dared light it, she drew one out, and struck it against the wall, bravo! It was a bright, warm flame, and she held her hands over it. It was quite an illumination for that poor little girl; no, I call it rather a magic taper, for it seemed to her as though she was sitting before a large iron-stove with brass ornaments, so beautifully blazed the fire within! The child stretched out her feet to warm them also; alas, in an instant the flame had died away, the stove disappeared, the little girl sat cold and comfortless, with the burnt match in her hand.

1.The author emphasized that the story happened on New Year’s Eve in order to _________.

A. highlight the cold weather

B. contrast with the girl’s sadness.

C. present the time

D. describe the situation

2.Which below is not the reason why the little girl dared not go home?

A. She earned not a single penny.

B. Her father would beat her.

C. Her home was almost as cold as the street.

D. She didn’t finished selling her matches.

3.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph told us ___________.

A. the girl was so cold that she formed an illusion that she sat beside a stove

B. a stove did give her some warmth on such a cold night

C. the thought she had could give her warmth

D. the light the match gave out did warm the little girl

4.The little girl gave us an impression of being __________.

A. beautiful and kind B. poor but imaginable

C. poor and pitiful D. poor but lively

Can you imagine that several hundred years ago, tomatoes were seen as toxic food in Europe?

What made Europeans believe this was John Gerard’s publication of Herbal in 1597. Gerard wrote: “The leaves and stalks of the tomato plant are toxic.” Undoubtedly, Gerard’s opinion was based on a misunderstanding of tomatoes. But his opinion was widely spread in Britain and North America for over two hundred years.

In the late 1700s, a lot of Europeans held more fears for tomatoes. A nick name for the fruit was “poison apple” because it was believed that aristocrats(貴族) got sick and died after eating them. But the actual reason was the pewter plates they used. Since tomatoes are high in acidity, when placed on the plates, the lead(鉛) in the plates would dissolve(溶解). This caused many deaths. Unluckily, no one knew this at that time. So the innocent tomatoes were picked as the killer.

Today, more than one and a half billion tons of tomatoes are produced every year around the world. Tomatoes are cooked in various ways. This healthy and tasty food finally wins its innocence(清白) back.

1.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

A. Europeans’ fears for tomatoes

B. History of tomato planting

C. Why do people eat so many tomatoes

D. How did the tomato prove its value

2.What does the underlined word “toxic” in paragraph 1 mean?

A. delicious B. nutritious(有營養(yǎng)的)

C. poisonous D. safe

3.When did people begin to eat tomatoes according to the text?

A. About 100 years ago. B. About 200 years ago.

C. About 300 years ago. D. About 400 years ago.

4.What’s the key point for the death of the aristocrats mentioned in the passage?

A. Tomatoes. B. The pewter plate.

C. Serious illness. D. Chemical reaction.
