If you feel at present that you don’t have enough friends in your life, one reason may be that you have let yourself become too busy to make time for the relationships you already have. Starting and keeping friendship requires effort and commitment.

Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other commitments that we don’t get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal(敘舊)with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.

Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of the invitations you receive from others can improve your social life in a hurry!

Are there any people you could call right now and be assured of a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could count on to help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?

If you haven’t seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument?

If the main reason you haven’t been getting together with the people you already know is that you have got too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with your real values and priorities(優(yōu)先考慮的事)in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want?

If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material toys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be over-committed because you never say “No” to anyone? Do you insist on doing things yourself that could be appointed to others? If so, why? Do you believe that everything depends on you?

Examine whether the way you are now spending your time accurately reflects your deepest values and priorities. Make sure that you schedule adequate time for the things that are truly most important to you.

If you really want to keep friends in your life, make a space in your schedule, and a space in your heart for them.

There is no doubt about it. The best way to learn new words is to do it unconsciously. I don’t mean while you’re unconscious. I mean while you are unconscious of the fact that it is sinking in.

That is how I learnt the 30,000 words in my vocabulary by living in an English-speaking world, mother tongue. I just pick them up. But some of them may be misunderstood. Now,to misunderstand does not mean not to understand. To misunderstand is to understand but incorrectly.

The 5% mislearnt of all the words we“know”will be the least frequently used words,as the more frequently used words are less likely to be mislearnt. Some of the misunderstandings may live with all our lives, without knowing that we got them wrong.

Many English teachers think that this natural method of learning words in one’s own mother tongue can be used for a second language learning. They teach their students how to play the Guessing Game.“There is no time to look up in your dictionaries all the new words you come across,”they will say.“You have to practise guessing what the word means from the context.”

This method of guessing in a second language learning does not work. It may succeed in many cases, but results in hundreds or thousands of wrongly-guessed meanings of words.

And what’s more, there are more separate meanings than there are words themselves. Our learners’ dictionaries usually have many meanings. A good dictionary is what makes self-learning possible.

  Don’t guess! Look it up!

59.It is certain that the best way to learn new words is_____.

A.to learn them by oneself

A.Some of the words the writer knows must have been misunderstood.

B.Most of the 30,000 words the writer learned are frequently used ones.

D.All the words the writer knows were learned by reading them.

62.It can be inferred that_____.

A.when somebody is conscious,he or she usually can’t learn new words by heart

B.we must use the words as often as possible in order to master them

C.it’s the best way to learn new words that one should only guess their meanings from the context

D.only dictionaries can help us learn language well

At the end of my senior year of high school, I got a job working at a local coffee shop.I thought the job would be easy and stress-free.I pictured myself pouring the best coffees, making delicious doughnuts (炸面包圈), and becoming friends with regular customers.

I wasn’t expecting the people with enormous orders, the women who complained that the coffee was much too creamy (含乳脂的), or the men who wanted their iced coffees remade again and again until they reached perfection.I couldn’t seem to please anyone.

One rainy day, one of my regular customers came in looking upset. He said he felt like getting in bed, pulling the sheets up over his head, and staying there for a few years.I knew exactly how he felt.

Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He was surprised, since he hadn’t ordered anything but coffee.I had given him his favorite type of droughnut.

   “It’s on me,” I told him.“Have a nice day.”

He smiled and thanked me before heading back out into the rain.

The next day, it was still raining.I spent my afternoon hanging out the window handing people their orders.I was completely wet and freezing cold.Worse, no one was tipping that day.Every time I looked into our empty tip jar, I grew more depressed.

Christine,

Thanks for being so sweet, kind and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who’s indeed nice. Please don’t change your ways! Have a great day! –Hank

After that, whenever I felt depressed or sick of coffee, I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely, “How can I help you?”

第二節(jié)  (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

“You do not need to be a rocket scientist.” Americans hear these words often.

People say them in schools, offices and factories. Broadcasters on radio and television use them.

How did the expression begin? No one seems to know it. 66 “It grew,” he says, “because rocket scientists probably are the most intelligent people around.”

Not everyone would agree. Some people might be considered more intelligent than rocket scientists. For example, a person who speaks and reads fifteen languages, or a medical doctor who operates on the brain. Still, many people would agree that there is something special about scientists who build rockets. 67

Moving pictures from before World War II showed a man named Buck Rogers landing on the planet Mars. He was a hero who could withdraw any enemy from outer space. The rocket scientist is a different kind of hero. 68

Rocket scientists, however, can have problems just like everyone else. A Washington rocket scientist tells about a launch that was postponed many, many times. Finally, everything seemed right. Mechanical failures had been repaired. The weather was good. The scientists had planned that part of the rocket would fall into the ocean after the launch. All ships and boats within many kilometers of the danger area had been warned. But in the last few seconds a small boat entered the area. 69

70 One scientist said, "As a child I loved to build rockets. Now I am grown. I still love to build rockets. And now I get paid for it."

A. he or she makes space travel possible.

B. It’s dangerous for rocket scientists to build rockets.

C. Maybe it has something to do with the mystery of space travel.

D. When the work goes well, most rocket scientists enjoy their jobs.

E. Have you ever heard of the space travel?

F. But an official of the American space agency, NASA, says the expression just grew.

G. Once again, the launch was put off.
