Dachi was the name of my pet cockatiel. His name comes from the second half of the Japanese word tomodachi, 1means friend.

I taught Dachi to whistle two songs, “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” and “Happy Birthday to You”. Though his whole range of skills was small, his 2 (confident) never lagged (滯后), and he would frequently wish me a happy birthday when it wasn’t — which could be 3 (embarrass).

When Dachi had been with us for three or four years, I think I may have become a bit too confident with him. One day, I didn’t realize that he was still sitting on my shoulder 4 until the door behind me shut loudly. He 5 (fly) away.

After I placed 6an advertisement in the local paper, I received a phone call from a woman. I was so relieved to hear this news that I 7 (immediate) drove to her house. When I arrived, she asked me to see whether the bird was 8(my).

I had a better idea 9 (identify) Dachi and began to whistle the “Happy Birthday” song. The lady stopped me, saying, “He is yours alright — he’s been whistling that all week.”

So Dachi came home in the car 10 (sit) on my shoulder, whistling.

故填which。

2

not…until/till直到……

故填an。

7

故填to identify。

10

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.

I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”

“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery!

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

It’s time to reconsider food. Around the globe, food problems threaten wildlife, wild places and the planet itself. Today, 7.3 billion people consume 1.6 times 1the earth’s natural resources can supply. By 2050, the world’s population will reach 9 billion and the demand for food will double.

So how do we produce more food for more people without 2(expand) the land and water already in use? We can’t double the amount of food. 3(fortunate), we don’t have to—we just have to double the amount of food available now instead. 4short, we must freeze the footprint of food.

In the near-term, food production is enough 5(provide) for all, but it doesn’t reach everyone who needs it. About 1.3 billion tons of food 6 (waste) each year—four times the amount 7 (need) to feed the more than 800 million people who are 8(hunger).

By improving efficiency and productivity while reducing waste and shifting consumption 9 (pattern), we can produce enough food for everyone by 2050 on roughly 10 same amount of land we use now.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

This is a story about a book that just kept selling, catching publishers, booksellers and even its author off guard. The book is Sapiens, by the Israeli academic Yuval Noah Harari, published in the UK in September 2014.It is a recondite(深奧的) work of evolutionary history charting the development of humankind through a scholarly examination of our ability to cooperate as a species.

Sapiens sold well on publication, particularly when it came out in paperback in the summer of 2015.What is remarkable about it, though, is that it's still selling in vast numbers. Sapiens has sold a further half million copies, establishing itself firmly at the top of the bestseller lists. The book's wild success is symptomatic of a broader trend in our book-buying habits: a surge in the popularity of intelligent, challenging nonfiction, often books that are several years old.

It was trade publication, the Booksellers, that first noted the rise of what is called the “brainy backlist”, it also highlighted a concomitant fall in the sales of the books that had been such a staple of publishers' catalogues-celebrity biographies. We are turning away from exciting but disposable stories of fame towards more serious, thoughtful, quiet books that help us understand our place in the world. Mark Richards, publisher at John Murray Prese, see the return to serious works of nonfiction as a response to the spirit of the age, “People have a hunger both for information and facts, and for nuanced(有細微差別的) exploration of issues, of a sort that books are in a prime position to provide.” he says.

In the end, the story of Sapiens is about a book becoming part of a national conversation. At a time when politics is more furious and fragmented than ever, when technology is colonizing our everyday existence.

The World Health Organization(WHO)has the following advice to protect yourself from being infected with the coronavirus or other flu-like diseases.

1 Clean your hands often and carefully with an alcohol-based hand cleaner or wash them with soap and water. Washing your hands kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Keep social distancing. 2 When someone coughs or sneezes, he releases small drops of liquid from his mouth or nose which may contain the viruses. If you are too close, you can breathe in the liquid, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Your hands touch many surfaces where viruses can survive up to nine days. Once contaminated(弄臟), hands can carry the viruses to your eyes, nose or mouth. 3

Make sure that you cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or facial tissue when you cough or sneeze. 4

If you have a fever, a cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. Stay home if you feel unwell, even with mild signs of infection such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover. If you have a fever, a cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention, and follow the directions of your local health official. 5 This will also help to prevent possible spread of the coronavirus and other viruses.

Scientists in the U.S. have created an artificial sunflower less than 0. 04 inches wide that can bend towards a light source and harvest solar energy. The flowers were found to be about 400 percent more efficient than other equipment, making them promising technology for solar power potentially even as a power source for solar-based spaceships.

The team, led by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, was looking to improve. the efficiency of solar cells by modeling after a feature of nature-phototropism. This is where a plant adjusts itself to face the sun, getting the most amount of energy it can get. In a study published in Nature Nanotechnology, the team said it was a 'big challenge'.

However, this problem has now been overcome. The team has developed a polymer(聚合物) that is responsive to being simulated by light, The system, which they have named SunBOT for short, is able to instantly explore and track a light source. It can do this across a range of temperatures without power supply or any human intervention.

The researchers used the polymer to create a 'stem'. Then they placed a material commonly used in solar cells on its top, representing the 'flower'. When the team shone a light at the SunBOTs, the polymer began heating up and shrinking, causing the stem to bend so the flower faced the light.

The researchers tested their artificial sunflowers to see how efficient they were at harvesting solar energy Findings showed they were up to 400 percent more effective than non-phototrophic materials.

The practical applications of SunBOTs are some way off. The study shows a proof of concept, but the technology will need to be scaled up to be used commercially. However, the team is confident it could one day be used a across a broad range of industries.

This work may be useful for solar harvesters signal revere smart windows, self-contained robotics solar sails for spaceships and intelligent energy generation (for example, solar cells and biofuels), the scientific team said.

1Why do the scientists create the artificial sunflower?

A.To prevent pollution.B.To protect sunflowers.

C.To reuse green energy.D.To warn us of the energy crisis.

2What can we learn about SunBOTs?

A.SunBOTs are likely to be too limited in future use.

B.There is some time before SunBOTs are put into markets.

C.Scientists are still not sure of the function of SunBOTs.

D.SunBOTts are not efficient, though advanced, in collecting energy.

3Where can we read such a text?

A.In an education report.B.In a market report.

C.In an experiment report.D.In a science report.
