It must have been around nine o’clock when I drove back home from work because it was already dark. As I came near to the gates I turned off the head lights of the car so as to prevent the beam from swinging (擺動(dòng)) through the window and waking Jack, who shared the house with me. But I needn’t have done so. I noticed that his light was still on, so he was awake anyway—unless he had fallen asleep while reading. I put the car away and went up the steps.
Then I opened the door quietly and went to Jack’s room. He was in bed awake, but he didn’t even turn towards me.
“What’s up, Jack﹖” I asked.
“For God’s sake, don’t make a noise,” he said.
The way he spoke reminded me of someone in pain who is afraid to talk in case he does himself serious injury.
“Take your shoes off, Neville,” Jack said.
I thought that he must be ill and that I had better give way to him to keep him happy. “There is a snake here,” he explained. “It’s asleep between the sheets. I was lying on my back reading when I saw it.I knew that moving was out of the question. I could not have moved even I’d wanted to.” I realized that he was serious. “I was depending on you to call a doctor as soon as you came home,” Jack went on. “It has not bitten me yet but I dare not do anything to upset it. It might wake up. I’m sick of this,” he said.“I took it for granted that you would have come home an hour ago.”

Younger adults who get either little sleep or a lot of it may see a greater expansion in their waistlines(腰圍)over time, a study published suggests. Researchers found that among black and Hispanic adults younger than 40, those who typically slept for five hours or less each night had a greater accumulation of belly fat over the next five years, versus(相比于) those who averaged six or seven hours. Those who slept eight hours or more in bed each night also showed a bigger fat gain - but it was less obvious than that seen in "short sleepers."
The study, reported in the Journal Sleep, does not prove that too little or too much sleep directly leads to excess fat gain. But the findings support and extend those of other studies linking sleep duration - particularly a lack of sleep - to weight gain and even to higher risks of diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease. Among participants younger than 40, the study found, those who said they slept for five hours or less each night gained more belly fat than those who averaged six or seven hours of sleep. On average, short sleepers showed a 32 percent gain in visceral(內(nèi)臟的)fat, versus a 13 percent gain among those who slept six or seven hours per night, and a 22 percent increase among men and women who got at least eight hours of sleep each night. A similar pattern was seen with superficial abdominal(腹部)fat.
The findings, according to lead researcher Dr. Kristen G. Hairston, support the belief that sleep habits affect weight and health in general. "Sleep is an important part of your overall health - not just in whether you're tired during the day," she said.
There may be indirect effects; people who get too little sleep may be too tired during the day to exercise, while those who spend a lot of time in bed may spend less time being active, relative to people who sleep fewer hours. Research also suggests that sleep loss alters people's levels of appetite-regulating hormones(荷爾蒙)- which could, in theory, cause them to overeat. Depression, which often affects people's sleep and has been linked to weight gain, could also be a factor, Hairston noted.

The holiday's upon us. Finally, after months of study, you have some time to yourself. so, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, "Why bother with books? We have the Internet and other media that offer a lot more colorful entertainment. Books are history!" But don't be fooled. There's still a lot to be said for reading.
One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful source of vocabulary, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it's far easier to get new English words and phrases from a book or article than it is from the TV or the Internet.
But an even more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply can not. The average webpage is picture-heavy and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. While "easy" may be attractive, unfortunately it's little use for many long-term development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there's still no substitute (替代品)of a book.
But perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it independently means that it's something you do by yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but something down the line, you will find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. We asked three bookworms -- an English teacher, a book editor and a film critic - to pick some favorite reads for you.
小題1: How many reasons for reading a book does the author mention in the passage?
A.OneB.TwoC.ThreeD.Four
小題2: According to this passage, we basically need a ______ in reading.
A.computerB.dictionaryC.notebookD.pencil
小題3:In the author's opinion, reading on the Internet may ________
A.develop long-term reading skillsB.improve the general language ability
C.not take the place of reading booksD.be an effective way of reading
小題4: The passage is written mainly to ____________.
A.share the pleasure of reading booksB.a(chǎn)dvise readers to read books
C.stress the importance of reading online.D.help readers to choose good books.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between teams of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously team work. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
小題1:Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Differences between Golf and Mountaineering.

B.mountaineers depend on each other while climbing
C.mountaineering climbers are free to use their won rules to climb

小題4: In the author’s opinion, one of the most important reason why so many people enjoy
mountaineering is that ____.
A.there are no man-made rules for mountaineers
B.mountaineering is a sport and not a game
C.it is one of the most dangerous sports
D.mountaineering brings us more enjoyment than other sports

Many college-bound freshmen are worrying about more than just who their roommates will be this fall. They may also be nervous about the well-known fact that they are likely to gain weight this school year. Or will they? While many of us remember the extra weight that showed up right around the start of our college careers, we are not always clear on how much weight we realize gained or why.
Many nutrition experts and psychologists think that it is the change in environment and the stress of a new beginning that cause the typical college freshmen to gain extra pounds. As students start a new stage of their lives, many eat to deal with the stress of change or loneliness. Often, college students are making meals or choosing foods independently for the first time in their lives. If they live in the college dormitory, they have a wide variety of foods to select from that may be higher in calories and fatter than the foods they consumed living at home. In addition, college social events usually center around food. I clearly remember sitting in my dorm cafeteria for two or three hours on a Saturday morning socializing with my new friends. Instead of eating only one meal, we would start with breakfast, eat throughout the duration of our socializing, and finish with lunch. Food also makes an appearance after late-night parties, as part of a school day, or simply to break the monotony(單調(diào) ).
So will this year's typical freshmen really gain 15 pounds? According to a 2006 Tufts University study, students enrolling in college this fall will gain weight, but maybe not the assumed 15 pounds. Based on the students surveyed, the study found that men can expect to gain an average of 6 pounds and women an average of 4.5 pounds during the freshman year.
小題1:According to the passage, it is obvious that __________.
A.the foods the freshmen had at home may be healthier than those in the dorm cafeteria
B.to break the monotony, the students should start with breakfast, and finish with lunch
C.the students should eat to deal with the stress of change or loneliness in new situations
D.the boys may gain less pounds than the girls during the first year in the college
小題2: Nutrition experts and psychologists think that __________.
A.students should get used to the stress of change through foods they had at home
B.the new environment and the stress have something to do with the students' extra pounds
C.students should know in what way they gain so much weight
D.choosing foods independently can make people lose weight naturally
小題3:From the writer's experience, the writer thinks that ____________.
A.foods in the dorm cafeteria are all higher in calories and fatter
B.the best way to break the monotony is through breakfast, lunch and supper
C.students in college will gain an average of about 5.25 pounds every fall
D.social events in the college are usually celebrated around food
小題4:This passage is mainly about ______________.
A how and why the freshmen gain extra pounds
B. the experience of the freshmen in the college
C. the freshmen with trouble in a new environment
D. the views of the nutrition experts and psychologists about gaining weight

We keep reading that TV is bad for you. If this is true, how come the current generation of TV-addicted kids is much smarter than we are? In my home, the only people who can work the remote control are the children.
Perhaps TV does educate you. For example, you learn a useful medical fact: A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies. “The killer was…” (dies)
But I guess the biggest things we learn from TV can be regarded as “Life Skills”. Bad things only happen on dark and stormy nights. Emotional breakdowns cause people to wander in the heavy rain without umbrellas. And contrary to what scientists say, the crack(霹靂) of lightning and the accompanying flash happen at exactly the same time, wherever you are.
I’ve even acquired useful geographical facts from science-fiction shows: Aliens speak English no matter which planet they come from.
Making use of what we learn from TV can improve our security. Consider these truths. If you are ever attacked by 20 bad guys, don’t worry about being outnumbered. The criminals will hang back and take turns to approach you in ones and twos just so you can conveniently defeat them all. Bad guys who are completely covered in black clothes always remove their black masks to reveal that they are in fact, aha, women.
TV also teaches us important information about escaping from danger. Watch and learn. (1) If anyone is running after you down a passage, you will find that boxes have been conveniently placed near all the walls you need to jump over. (2) If you are tall and handsome, you can run from any number of armed criminals, and every shot will miss you.
Be warned, however. If your name card says “henchman” (幫兇) and you are part of a group of plain-looking people trying to catch a handsome individual, a single shot will kill you. But don’t be anxious: TV also delivers useful information for bad guys. All cars are inflammable (易燃的) and have amazing shock absorbers that enable them to fly into the air and land without damage — except police cars.
TV even teaches us about TV. Whenever anyone turns on a TV, it shows a news flash about someone they know. They then turn the box off immediately after that news item.
小題1:By saying “A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence
before he dies” (Paragraph 2), the writer shows his________.
A.humorB.sympathy
C.deep concernD.medical knowledge
小題2:We can infer from Paragraph 3 that in the real world_______.
A.bad things cause people to break down in the rain
B.bad things never happen on dark and stormy nights
C.people with emotional problems like to walk in the rain without umbrellas
D.the crack of lightning and the accompanying flash don’t happen at the same time
小題3:On TV what usually happens when a person turns it on?
A.The news shown is always about someone the person knows.
B.The person always turns off the TV when it’s time for news.
C.The program shown is always about the importance of TV.
D.TV always shows news about famous people.
小題4:What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Life skills can be learned from TV.
B.TV plays an important role in society.
C.Watching TV makes people more creative.
D.What happens in TV is very different from reality.
