School was over and I felt quite tired. I sat at the very 41 of the crowded bus because of my anxiety to get home. Sitting there makes me 42 out like a shiny coin in a pile of dull pennies.
Janie, the 43 , tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by striking the match of 44 .
I tried to mind my manners and 45 listen, but usually I am too busy thinking about my day. On this day, 46 , her conversation was worth listening to.
“My father’s sick,” she said to no one in particular (專門) , I could see the 47 and fear in her eyes. “What’s wrong with him?” I asked. With her eyes wet and her voice tight from 48 the tears, she answered, “Heart trouble.” Her eyes 49 as she continued. “I have already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.”
I was 50 . My heart ached for her. And this reminded me of the great 51 that my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and 52 is, for her. I wouldn’t like anyone to 53 that.
Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver. That was 54 her job. She had a whole world of 55 and concerns, too. I suddenly felt very 56 . I realized I had only thought of people as far as what their purposes were in my life. I paid no attention to Janie 57 she was a bus driver. I had 58 her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.
For all I know, I’m just another person in 59 else’s world, and may not be 60 . I should not have been so selfish and self-centered. Everyone has places to go, people to see and appointment to keep. Understanding people is an art.

Sarah Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school:
Wentworth Girls’ school
Beachside
July 20th
Dearest Mom and Dad,
I’ m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.
The trouble started last night when I was smoking in bed. This breaks the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.
As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away.
Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire.
There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning.
The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.
The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.
I’m very sorry about this.
Much love,
Sarah

Ibrahim became disabled after contracting polio (小兒麻痹癥) when he was three years old. At first his parents, like many other parents of disabled children in Niger, did not want to send him to school. They were worried he would be laughed at by his classmates.
Despite his disability, and his parents’ doubts, Ibrahim was determined to go to school. “When I was eight,” Ibrahim says, “other kids of my age were going to school while I stayed at home. I did not like that. So, I pestered (纏著) my parents until they finally let me go to school.”
Ibrahim’s parents sent him to a private school nearby. Although the journey to and from school was a short one, it still wasn’t easy for Ibrahim. He had to use his hands to help him move along, protecting them with plastic slippers. But at least he was getting an education.
However, after only a year in school, Ibrahim’s education was interrupted when his parents separated. His mother did not have the means to continue paying for his tuition.
In 2007, Ibrahim received some money to be fitted with a leg brace (支架), corrective shoes and his first pair of crutches (拐杖). Now that he was more mobile than before, the most important thing for him was to find a way to go back to school.
“I wanted to start school again last October,” Ibrahim says. “After my mother told me she could not afford it, I went to visit some of my relatives for support. And I collected 5,000 francs CFA (US $8) to pay my tuition for half a year. I will find the rest of the money somehow.”
Ibrahim attends a school in which he is the only disabled student. According to his teacher, he is among the top five students in a class of 55.

A. There was a lot of housework for him to do.
B. They had no money to pay for his tuition.
