In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize all possible basic knowledge. Instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asia societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects society's belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments.
There are advantages and disadvantages of both systems of education. For example, one advantage of the system in Japan is that students there learn much more about maths, physics, biology and chemistry than American students by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from school, they haven't memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.
1.The writer's purpose of writing this passage is________.
A. to share his idea with others in a new way
B. to introduce two different systems of education through contrast
C. to criticize the society that values memorization
D. to prepare students for society
2.Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The system of education in the West is more creative than that in the East.
B. Japanese students learn much more about science than American students.
C. Canadian students are more individual than Korean students.
D. Students in North America are not as friendly as those in Asia.
3.From the facts, we can infer that________.
A. Asian students are more likely to do better in teamwork than American students
B. Chinese students are more hard-working in their studies than Mexican students
C. the Western educational system is much better than the Eastern educational system
D. the Eastern educational system is as difficult as the Western educational system
4.What is the best title of the passage?
A. Advantages and disadvantages of educational system
B. The value of individualism
C. Educational system—an obvious difference between the East and the West
D. Memorization—an important learning method

When a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn’t touched a cat or a dog in over 20 years.I spent at least 20 minutes, knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around, relaxed. What he was expressing outwardly, I was feeling inwardly. It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a li fe or another creature with something as simple as my care.
Over the next few days, there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered t here. They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat. These were guys you wouldn’t usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water appeared along with bread, wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.
The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place. He's getting treated like a king. This was true.but as I watched I was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America. We need more programs. We need more psychologists or treatment of various kinds. Some may even talk about making prisons more kind. But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness. Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged. It's often seen as a weakness.
Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak.
The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,”I need some help here”,he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.
1.Which of the following statements is true?
A.The cat was dirty because it was kept in prison.
B.The author realized the importance of practising kindness.
C.The officer in the prison enjoyed petting the cat.
D.The prisoners prepared food for both the cat and birds.
2.We can infer from the third paragraph that______.
A.caring for others is encouraged in American prisons
B.the American prison culture will be improved
C.showing love to others ca n make prisoners strong
D.the author is not content with the prison culture
3.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Animals Need Care.
B.Prison Culture is Important.
C.Caring Makes Us Human.
D.Everyone Needs to be Cared for.
4.In Paragraph 2,the author mentioned that “Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.” to______ .
A.show us the officer and prisoners get along well with each other
B.show us the officer and prisoners all like the cat
C.show us the American prison culture does need improvement
D.show us the American prison culture is great

On Jan 15th, 2015, Justin Valdez, a college student, was shot in a subway station in San Francisco. The surveillance video(監(jiān)控錄像) showed that before Justin was killed, the killer pulled out his gun several times, and even wiped his nose with it. However, nobody noticed the killer. The surrounding passengers all focused on their cell phones.
We may see the same scene everywhere in our life: in subway stations, restaurants, elevators and so on, people are watching their cell phones. From a family reunion to a date with a friend, people couldn’t stop checking their twitter and facebook on the cell phones, ignoring the persons in front completely. Phubbing(低頭癥) not only involves young people, but also the elderly and kids.
“Phubbing” is a new term which comes from the words “phone’’ and “snub(冷落)”. It describes the habit of snubbing someone in favor of a cell phone. The word “phubbing” was included in the Australian National Dictionary in 2012. Obviously, the indifference(冷漠) and rudeness of the information age are spreading globally. A Stop Phubbing campaign website has been set up. You can find the slogan of the website as follows: “stop twittering, stop posting photos…enjoy your food, enjoy the music and respect others.”
Phubbing appears harmless. However, it does influence our life. Jimmy, an epicure(美食家), wrote in his blog: “I can no longer focus on what I am eating since I started twittering. My skill of food photography has improved very fast, while my interest in food drops as a result.”
Let us put down our cell phones and re-enjoy the real taste of our food and the warmth of interpersonal communication.
1.The case of Justin Valdez is given in the first paragraph to show
A. gun violence happens easily in the US
B. phubbing may lead to terrible disasters
C. the killer didn’t mean to kill him
D. the killer had made a careful plan
2.Jimmy’s words suggest that
A. phubbing is actually harmless
B. phubbing stops people enjoying their life
C. phubbing affects people’s eating habits the most
D. phubbing helps people improve their photographic skills
3.What is the text mainly about?
A. How the word “phubbing” came into being.
B. The popular campaign of stop phubbing.
C. The meaning of the word “phubbing”.
D. The great harm of phubbing.

A strong memory depends on the health and vitality (活力) of your brain. They say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but when it comes to the brain, scientists have discovered that this old saying simply isn’t true. 1.
Give your brain a workout. Memory, like muscular strength, requires you to “use it or lose it”. The more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. 2.
Don’t skip the physical exercise. While mental exercise is important for brain health, that doesn’t mean you never need to break a sweat. Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp. It increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss.
Get enough sleep. There is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get by on and the amount you need to function at your best. 3.
Keep stress in check. Stress is one of the brain’s worst enemies. Over time, stress destroys brain cells. Studies have also linked stress to memory loss.
Have a laugh. 4. That holds true for the brain and the memory, as well as the body. Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter engages multiple regions across the whole brain.
5. Just as the body needs fuel, so does the brain. You probably already know that a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, “healthy” fats and lean protein will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory. For brain health, though, it’s not just what you eat—it’s also what you don’t eat.
A. Eat a brain-boosting diet.
B. Play games with memory.
C. Laughter is the best medicine.
D. But oversleeping is not good for your brain.
E. Even skipping a few hours makes a difference!
F. You have to shake things up from time to time!
G. The human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change.
