2.No Grammar Errors
I prefer Lynne Truss's words:I am a grammar"sticker".And,like Truss-author of Eats,shoots & Leaves-I have a"zero tolerance"approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.
Now,Truss and I disagree on what it means to have"zero tolerance".She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar"deserve to be struck by lightning,and buried in an unmarked grave",while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job-even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.
Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies,iFixit or Dozuki,takes a compulsory grammar test.If they can't distinguish between"to"and"too",their applications go into the bin.
Of course,we write for a living.iFixit.com is the world's largest online repair manual (指南),and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation(證明文件),like work instructions and step-by-step user manuals.So,it makes sense that we've made a strong strike against grammar errors.
But grammar is relevant for all companies.Yes,language is constantly changing,but that doesn't make grammar unimportant.Good grammar is credibility,especially on the Internet.And,for better or worse,people judge you if you can't tell the difference between"their""there"and"they're".
Good grammar makes good business sense-and not just when it comes to hiring writers.Writing isn't in the official job description of most people in our office.Still,we give our grammar test to everybody,including our salespeople,our operations staff,and our programmers.
Grammar signifies more than just a person's ability to remember high school English.I've found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing.Applicants who don't think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren't important.
63.The author agrees with Lynne Truss in thatA.
A.grammar mistakes can't be tolerated
B.books on grammar make people stupid
C.people need to learn basic grammar
D.grammar mistakes are unavoidable
64.What's the author's attitude towards the job seekers who mix up basic grammar?C
A.They aren't qualified for their jobs.
B.They must be severely punished.
C.They should be left out for a job.
D.They have to correct their mistakes.
65.Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?A
A.Grammar is quite important for their existence.
B.They are companies where one learns grammar.
C.They depend on grammar correction for a living.
D.Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test.
66.What can we learn from the passage?D
A."Zero tolerance"approach to grammar errors seems unfair.
B.Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.
C.Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense.
D.People who attach importance to grammar may pay attention to other things.

And,like Truss…I have a"zero tolerance"approach to grammar mistakes"可知,作者和特魯斯一樣對(duì)待語法錯(cuò)誤是零容忍,所以作者在不能容忍語法錯(cuò)誤上同意特魯斯的看法,故選A.
64.C 細(xì)節(jié)理解題. 根據(jù)第二段"while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job-even if they are otherwise qualified for the position."可知,作者認(rèn)為,不應(yīng)該給那些混淆基本語法的人工作機(jī)會(huì),即使他們?cè)谄渌矫婺軌騽偃喂ぷ,pass over不考慮(給某人工作機(jī)會(huì)),故選C.
65.A 推理判斷題.根據(jù)第三段"If job hopefuls can't distinguish between"to"and"too",their applications go into the bin."和第四段"Of course,we write for a living…So,it makes sense that we've made a strong strike against grammar errors."可知,這兩個(gè)公司都是靠寫東西為生的,因此,對(duì)語法知識(shí)要求格外嚴(yán)格,故選A.
66.D 推理判斷題.根據(jù)最后一段"Grammar signifies more than just a person's ability to remember high school English.I've found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing…Applicants who don't think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren't important."

1.Besides containing attractive flowers,trees and other plants that beautify the community,ecofriendly rain gardens are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby.
A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden.It is just a far more ecofriendly garden.Usually it is built lower than the ground.Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak(浸入)slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply.
Thus,a rain garden keeps the water,allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden,rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused.The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two.This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed.This is a simple,attractive,and ecofriendly"green"way to treat storm water.
What's more,planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment.Without using expensive machinery and chemicals,rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.
Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate,soil,and water conditions.They may attract local wildlife such as native birds.Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week,unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week.Once native plants establish the necessary root system,they will require little care.
Often,local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems.However,you don't need to be a professionally environmental engineer to create a rain garden.As long as you're ecoconscious homeowners,you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.

4.Which of the following is NOT true for the function of rain gardensB?
A.They are good for living conditions.
B.They increase pollution.
C.They can beautify the community.
D.They improve the environment.
5.Which of the following is the ecofriendly function of rain gardens discussed in Paragraph 4A?
A.They can help reduce the pollution problem.
B.They can keep the rain and storm water.
C.They can be healthy for the people around.
D.They can make the environment more beautiful.
6.One of the main reasons why native plants are recommended is thatD.
A.they cost less and are much easier to get
B.they may attract local wildlife to come
C.they require little care from the local gardener
D.they are more used to the local growing conditions
7.What do we know about rain gardensC?
A.They need little water after all the plants are planted.
B.They may attract local birds and change the local climate.
C.They usually need at least an inch of rainwater a week.
D.They may reduce the water pollution problem by 70%.

18.Researchers are reporting the first treatment to speed recovery from severe brain injuries caused by falls and car crashes:a cheap flu medicine-amantadine,whose side benefits were discovered by accident decades ago.
Severely injured patients in the United States,Denmark and Germany who were given amantadine got better faster than those who received another medicine.After four weeks,more people in the flu drug group could give reliable yes-and-no answers,follow commands or use a spoon or hairbrush-things that none of them could do at the start.Far fewer patients who got amantadine remained in a vegetative state,17percent versus 32percent.
"This drug moved the needle in terms of speeding patient recovery,and that's not been shown before,"said neuropsychologist(神經(jīng)心理學(xué)家) Joseph Giacino of Boston's Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital,co-leader of the study.He added:"It really does provide hope for a population that is viewed in many places as hopeless."
Many doctors began using amantadine for brain injuries years ago,but until now there's never been a big study to show that it works.The results of the federally(聯(lián)邦地) funded study appear in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
A neurologist(神經(jīng)病學(xué)家) who wasn't involved in the research called it an important step.But many questions remain,including whether people less severely injured would benefit,and whether amantadine actually improves patients'long-term outcome or just speeds up their recovery.
Each year,an estimated 1.7million Americans suffer a brain injury.With no proven treatment to rely on,doctors have used a variety of medicines approved for other diseases in the hopes that they would help brain injury patients.Those decisions are based on"guesses and logic rather than data",said Dr.John Whyte,of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute in suburban Philadelphia.He led the study along with Giacino.
Amantadine,an inexpensive medicine,was approved for the flu in the mid-1960s.The first hint that it might have other uses came a few years later when it appeared to improve Parkinson's symptoms in nursing home patients.It was found to have an effect on the brain's dopamine system(多巴胺系統(tǒng)),whose many functions include movement and alertness,and it was later approved for Parkinson's.
It's now commonly used for brain injuries, and the researchers felt it was important to find out"whether we're treating patients with a useful drug,a harmful drug or a useless drug,"Whyte said.

74.According to Paragraph 2,the patients in a vegetative state may be those whoD.
A.can follow simple orders
B.recover faster than expected
C.can't breathe on their own
D.show no sign of brain activities
75.According to the passage,Amantadine is a medicine thatC.
A.is useful for flu only
B.is aimed to improve memory
C.speeds up brain injury recovery
D.benefits patients'brain injuries in the long run
76.The aim of the study led by Giacino and Whyte is toB.
A.get enough fund from the federal government
B.prove the effect of Amantadine on brain injuries
C.publish its results in New England Journal of Medicine
D.provide hope for patients considered hopeless in the past

19.Following Christmas dinner,my family was relaxing around the kitchen table. The goodcooking smells still stayed. My sister, our chef, was enjoying the compliments.一"Delicious meal!""Everything was wonderful."Dad had risen from his chair and was contentedly standing nearby.
My nephew, never one to sit still for too long, began playing his new basketball around the table and throughout the kitchen.Upon nearing Dad,he stopped--almost uncertainly. With shaking, wrinkled hands,Dad had reached out for the ball.He did not speak, and the boy, confused, looked up and over at us.It took some convincing, but the ball was lightly passedover.
I watched my father closely to see what he would do.A playful smile appeared on his face.Holding the ball and reaching forward,Dad bounced it on the floor then caught it.This action was repeated.Nodding approvingly,he then turned towards our assembled group.Gently throwing the ball away,Dad began a game of catch.
