“Most people in Britain or America spend four hours every day staring at a piece of furniture. ”said a spokesman. “Television eats up half the time you are not working or sleeping —ten yeas of an average life. All those things you want to do —when are you to do them? TV takes away your real life.”
A study of 20,000 British children published in 1999 compared TV viewing habits with social attitudes. Children who watched over four hours' TV per day were more likely to agree with statements like “I am not worth much as a person. ”and “There is nothing I can do about the world problems. ”
White Dot organizes an annual (每年的) “TV turn off week ”, which will start from April 23 this year. The group said that last year over 5 million people in Britain and the United States supported the event, mainly concerned parents and students.
This year they want more people to join in. That's why a spokesman, David Burke, went into the enemy camp. In a TV program shown in Britain in late March he put the case against television. Next day , the TV critics were unanimous (一致同意的) . Mr. Burke had made his points with force, wisdom and style. Give this man his own TV series!

The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a signal to attract the female from where she has been feeding.
Among many birds that nest in holes, the male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鳥羽) which acts as signal for drawing the female’s attention to a suitable nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(紅尾鴝) may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to reveal(顯露) his tail.
If the female failed to react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts by following the male through the hole the displays stop, you must be at the right place at the right time to watch them.
36. How do the blue tits choose their nest?
A. They choose their nest together.
B. The male chooses their nest.
C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.
D. The female chooses their nest.
37. The writer was lucky to see ________.
A. how the male made his tricks
B. how an interested female played with the male happily
C. what the male displayed and won the female
D. that the male tried his best but failed to attract the female
38. You can spot a pair of redstarts in a Walsh wood ________.
A. at any time B. regularly C. in April D. occasionally
39. The writer is probably ________.
A. a bird expert B. a bird-hunter C. a bird raiser D. a scientist

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A,B,C,D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Mike McClure walked into Sarasota Bay for a little fishing on a beautiful day last April. This afternoon, the water was shallow enough at low tide that McClure could easily walk 100 yards offshore and cast(投)his line in any direction.
Near sunset, still without a fish, he decided to turn back. Rather than turn to his earlier course, he chose a more direct path toward shore, thinking the bay wouldn't get deeper along the way. Instead, he was trapped. He tried to walk in different directions, but shallower water eluded(避開)him. Finally, he decided his safest choice was to head straight for land.
"Within about five steps, the water was coming in through the top of the waders(高筒防水膠靴)," says McClure.
He felt the deadweight of the flooding waders pulling him down and knew that if he didn't get out of them, he would drown. But he failed to kick his way out of the waders. Instead, they pulled him completely below the surface.
Back onshore, Eliza Cameron, 19, Loren Niurka Mora, 20, and Caitlin Petro, 20, had been watching McClure fish as they rested on the grass after a long week of classes. They saw McClure go under and then heard him cry, "Help!”
The three friends kicked off their shoes and ran into the bay. They were all good swimmers, but all hid a fear that he might pull them down too because they'd have to dive to save him.
When they reached him, he'd managed to kick himself out the waders, but his eyes had partly rolled back. Cameron and Mora each hooked an arm under his shoulders, while Petro supported his back and held his hand. Then the three friends tried their best to tug him towards shore. Finally, they all returned to shore safely.
56.Mike McClure didn't turn back by his earlier course because _____.
A. He wanted to choose a short course
B. His earlier course was dangerous
C. He just wanted to take a risk
D. He knew where the water was deep
57.What directly trapped Mike McClure in the bay?
A. His wrong decision B. The coming high tide
C. His waders' being flooded D. The depth of water
58.During the rescue, ____.
A. The three women were afraid of being trapped in the water
B.Cameron and Petro helped catch Mike McClure's arms
C. The three women removed Mike McClure's waders
D. Mike McClure still wore his flooding waders
