The survey about childhood in the Third World shows that the struggle for survival is long and hard. But in the rich world, children can 1 from a different kind of poverty-of the spirit. 2 , one Western country alone now sees 14 000 attempted suicides (自 殺) every year by children under 15, and one child 3 five needs psychiatric (心理) advice.
There are many good things about 4 in the Third World. Take the close and con-stant relation between children and their par-ents, relatives and neighbours for example. In the West, the very nature of work puts dis-tance between 5 and children. But in most Third World villages mother and father do not go miles away each day to work in of-fices. 6 , the child sees mother and father, relations and neighbours working 7 and often shares in that work.
A child 8 in this way learns his or her role through joining in the community's 9 : helping to dig or build, look after ani-mals or babies-rather than 10 playing with water and sand in kindergarten, keeping pets 11 playing with dolls.
These children may grow up with a less oppressive sense of space and time than the 12 children. Their sense of days and time has a lot to do with the change of seasons and positions of the sun or the moon in the sky. Children in the rich world, 13 , are pro-vided with a watch as one of the 14 signs of growing up, so that they can 15 along with their parents about being late for school times, meal times, bed times, the times of TV shows...
Third World children do not usually 16 to stay indoors, still less in high-rise apartments (公寓). Instead of dangerous road, “keep off the grass” signs and “don't speak to strangers”, there is often a sense of 17 to study and play. Parents can see their children outside rather than observe them 18 from ten floors up.
19 , twelve million children under five still die every year through hunger and disease. But childhood in the Third World is not all 20 .

[1]Losing weight is hard enough.Keeping it off is even harder. Now a new study by researchers at Penn State suggests that the techniques that work for losing weight aren’t necessarily the same as those that help keep you slim.
[2]First the researchers surveyed over 1,100 people who had achieved significant weight loss and maintained it.The researchers identified 36 weight-loss and weight-maintenance practices that at least10% of the group used.

[5]Still, say many nutrition and obesity experts. The basic principles of weight loss and maintenance are the same; you have to eat a healthy diet and increase your exercise.People who lose weight and keep it off tend to eat significantly healthier foods and do a lot more exercise than the average American.
[6]But what may maintain between weight-loss and maintenance is a person’s attitude; rather than focusing on actively losing weight in the short term.People have to start focusing on long-term, permanent lifestyle changes and behaviors, if they want to maintain the weight that’s been lost. The key to success, experts agree, is motivation, not necessarily the particulars of your weight-loss program.

(1)The British summer is extremely beautiful.Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this picturesque scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them?
(2)Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected.According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining population, including the most popular ones. What's more, half of all butterfly species are in the danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping dramatically. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly was commonly seen in the south. However, it has started colonizing(遷徙至)Edinburgh in the past few years.
(3)The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past three years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler and their habitat is also worsening.Fortunately Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year compared to the last few summers.Conservationists believe the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies.
(4)Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said:“Large quantities of butterflies tell us that all is well with nature. When they decline it's a warning that other wildlife will be soon ________.”
(5)The survey is still going on.The public are also encouraged to keep track of the UK's butterfly population. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness of the value of butterflies in the UK.Butterflies give an indication of the well-being of nature and the environment.

Celebrating sleep
World Sleep Day, observed on 21 March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide.Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common.
In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa.Of the people that responded to the survey, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed(診斷)with insomnia(失眠)and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia. In addition, 30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.
Overall, the survey found that ninny people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey's findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of putting on weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep.First, you should have regular sleep habits.Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day.You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you.At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone.By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.
