She is a cute, quiet girl. As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her. But recently she has become somewhat mysterious, and not so open as before. She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key. Her mother can’t help worrying about her: what if she falls in love, which is too early for a girl of her age? After all, she is reaching the “dangerous stage”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.

One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate and would return late. As this was the first time, her mother agreed, but she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited till nine and decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. When the girl came in, the mother was watching TV, pretending nothing had happened. “Mom, I’m back.” “Yeah.” “Sorry to be late. Still sitting up?” “Yes, oh, that… who’s that boy?” The daughter was silent for a moment. “Ah. It’s my monitor. He gave me a lift on his way home. Mom, I’m going to bed.” “All right. Go to sleep early.”

Next morning when the mother went to the daughter’s room to do some cleaning, she found her diary left at her pillow. Finally she opened it. It read: Mom, it’s love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn’t.

Most mornings, the line begins to form at dawn: scores of silent women with babies on their backs, buckets balanced on their heads, and in each hand a bright-blue plastic jug. On good days, they will wait less than an hour before a water tanker goes across the dirt path that serves as a road in Kesum Purbahari, a slum on the southern edge of New Delhi. On bad days, when there is no electricity for the pumps, the tankers don’t come at all. “That water kills people,” a young mother named Shoba said one recent Saturday morning, pointing to a row of pails filled with thick, caramel (焦糖)-colored liquid. “Whoever drinks it will die.” The water was from a pipe shared by thousands of people in the poor neighborhood. Women often use it to wash clothes and bathe their children, but nobody is desperate enough to drink it.

There is no standard for how much water a person needs each day, but experts usually put the minimum at fifty liters. The government of India promises (but rarely provides) forty. Most people drink two or three liters—less than it takes to wash a toilet. The rest is typically used for cooking and bathing. Americans consume between four hundred and six hundred liters of water each day, more than any other people on earth. Most Europeans use less than half that. The women of Kesum Purbahari each hoped to drag away a hundred liters that day—two or three buckets’ worth. Shoba has a husband and five children, and that much water doesn’t go far in a family of seven, particularly when the temperature reaches a hundred and ten degrees before noon. She often makes up the difference with bottled water, which costs more than water delivered any other way. Sometimes she just buys milk; it’s cheaper. Like the poorest people everywhere, the people of New Delhi’s slums spend a far greater percentage of their incomes on water than anyone lucky enough to live in a house connected to a system of pipes.

1.The underlined word “slum” most likely means ______.

A. a village

B. a small town

C. a poor area of a town with badly-built, over-crowded buildings

D. the part of a town that lacks water

2.Sometimes the water tanker doesn’t come because ______.

A. the weather is bad

B. there is no electricity

C. there is no water

D. people don’t want the dirty water

3.Which of the following statements is wrong?

A. water is the biggest expense for people in New Delhi’s slums

B. Shoba has a family of seven people

C. in Kesum Purbahari milk is cheaper than bottled water

D. Americans uses the largest amount of water each day

4.The passage mainly tells us ______.

A. how women in Kesum Purbahari gets their water

B. how much water a day a person deeds

C. that India lacks water badly

D. how India government manages to solve the problem of water

Your car is a necessary part of your life. You use it every day. Of course, you want to hold on to it so you make sure it has the latest alarm and immobilizer(防雷控制系統(tǒng)). But despite all these, cars like yours are still stolen every day. In fact, in this country, one car is stolen almost every minute! And if your car is stolen, you only have a 50:50 chance of seeing it again.

Each year, car crime costs nearly £3 billion. Of course, if you’re insured, you won’t lose out, or will you? Firstly, you will have to pay extra insurance later on, and then you may not be offered the full amount by the agent. You will probably have to hire a car and you will also lose the value of the contents and accessories (配件) in the car.

Now comes the solution. An RAC Trackstar system, hidden in one of 47 possible secret locations in your car, is the key of our system. If your car is stolen, radio signals are sent at twenty-second intervals from the car to the RAC Trackstar National Control Center via a satellite network. Then a computer gives the vehicle’s exact location, speed and direction.

The RAC Trackstar National Control Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will immediately inform the police in the area where the car is located. Because the police receive information every twenty seconds, they will always know the vehicle’s location. Once the thief has been arrested, your car will be returned to you.

RAC Trackstar is unique in being able to provide the National Control Center with details of the exact location of your car, its speed and direction. And speed is the key to successful recovery of a stolen vehicle. RAC Trackstar Control will immediately tell the police if you report your car stolen and under the 24-hour Guardian Option. It will also tell you if your car has been stolen. RAC Trackstar’s constant updates mean the police are kept informed of the car’s location. All these greatly improve your chances of seeing your car again.

1. If your car is stolen, you will have to ______.

A. hire a new car

B. pay more insurance

C. buy a RAC Trackstar system

D. inform the National Control Center

2.The Trackstar system can tell the police ______.

A. how the car is stolen B. who the thief is

C. what brand the car is D. where the car is

3.The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refers to ______.

A. the local police station

B. the Guardian Option

C. the insurance company

D. the RAC Trackstar Control

4.According to the passage, people with RAC Trackstar ______.

A. automatically find directions

B. seldom get their vehicles damaged

C. have less chance of being in an accident

D. are more likely to get the stolen cars back

Worst Game Ever?

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a video game that came out for the Atari 2600 game system in 1982. It was based on a very popular film of the same name. Star programmer Howard Warshaw created it with consultation from the film director Steven Spielberg.

It was July 27th, 1982. Howard Warshaw was hot off the success of his most recent game, Raiders of the Lost Ark. He received a call from Atari C.E.O, Ray Kassar. Atari had bought the rights to make a video game version of Spilberg’s Movie, E.T., which had just been released(發(fā)行) in June. Kassar told Warshaw that Spielberg had specifically asked for Warshaw to make the game Warshaw was honored, but there was one huge problem. Atari needed the game finished by September 1st in order to start selling it during the Christmas season.

It had taken Warshaw six months to create Raiders of the Lost Ark. The game he made prior to that took him seven months. He was expected to create E.T. in around five weeks. Warshaw accepted the challenge anyway and production began. Spielberg wanted Warshaw to create a simple maze game similar to Pac-man, but V had a bigger vision. He wanted players to explore different environments in 3D world. Usually companies like Atari have people test games before releasing them, but they decided to skip testing due to time limitations.

The game was a hot holiday item at first. Unfortunately, Atari overestimated how many they would sell. They made 5 million copies and they only sold 1.5 million. Most people who played the game hated it. The graphics(畫面)were bad. Game play was awkward. Players got stuck in holes that they couldn’t escape. Some people who stuck with the game grew to like it, but it wasn’t the mainstream success that Atari had hoped it would be.

Too many copies of the game sat on store shelves. One employee remembers the game being discounted five times, from $49.95 to less than a dollar. A newspaper in New Mexico reported that between 10 and 20 semitrailer truckloads of Atari products were crushed and buried at landfill in Alamogordo. Atari lost over $100 million on E.T.. The game was so bad that it was said to have affected Atari’s reputation. The video game industry soon fell into a deep depression, with a profit $3.2 billion in 1983 to just over $100 million in 1985, almost a 97% drop. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will long be remembered as one of the worst games ever made, if not one of the causes of the decline of entire video game industry.

1.What can we learn about Howard Warshaw from the passage?

A. He was ambitious. B. He was cautious.

C. He was unreliable. D. He was inexperienced.

2.Why did E.T. end up one worst video game ever?

A. It was produced in a hurry.

B. It was set in a 3D environment.

C. It was released at a wrong time.

D. It was based on a popular movie.

3.According to the passage, the failure of the game E.T. may have____

A. destroyed the reputation of the film E.T.

D. made people lose interest in 3D environment

4.In the passage the author describes Atari’s failure________
