Trying to come to a decision complete on your own can be risky. Some decisions are very important that they shouldn’t made without talking to others first. There have several advantages if you consult the persons you trust. For one thing, they can give you valuable advice and they may point out some things you may have been overlooked. For another, friends may stop you from making big mistakes.

When consult others about important decisions, you should keep two things on mind. The first one is that you need to find someone whom you respected enough to trust his or her judgment. The second thing to consider is how to do if you disagree with this person. Maybe turning to a third or fourth person for help is a good choice. In a word, making any big decision alone can lead to problems. Talking to friends or family members first are always a good idea.

In her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超過……分?jǐn)?shù)) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, for that matter, teams of any kind.

That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers.

Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(瑕疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”

One of the ironies(諷刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible. American kids’ performance on the field shows just how well they can do when expectations are high. It’s too bad that their test scores show the same thing.

1.According to Paragraph 2, we know that ________.

A. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schools

B. too much importance is placed on sports in America

C. American high schools complain about sports time

D. PISA plays a very important role in America

2.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means ________.

A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lot

B. high expectations push up American students’ academic performance

C. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performance

D. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance

3.The purpose of this article is to ________.

A. compare Polish schools with those in America

B. call on American schools to learn from the Polish model

C. draw public attention to a weakness in American school tradition

D. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions

科目:高中英語 來源:2016-2017學(xué)年湖北武漢二中高二上期中考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

The universe looks like a pretty quiet place to live. But the universe is filled with dangerous things, all struggling to be the one to wipe us off the planet. Happily for us, they’re all pretty unlikely, but if you wait long enough, one of them is certain to get us. But which one?

1. Death by Asteroid (小行星)

Of all the ways we might meet our untimely death, getting wiped out by an asteroid is the most likely. Why? Because we sit in a universal shooting gallery, with 100 tons of material hitting us every day. The problem, though, occurs every few centuries when something big this way comes. If you could ask a dinosaur, I’d imagine they would tell you to take this seriously.

2. Death by Exploding Star

When a huge star ends its life, it does so with a bang, which sends death spreading across space in the form of high-energy radiation. Many studies show that the bang would have to be closer than about 75 light years to do us any harm. The good news: no stars so close are able to do the deed.

3. Death by Dying Sun

The sun is important to us; without it, we’d freeze. But the sun is also middle-aged, already halfway to running out of fuel, expanding into a red giant, and cooking us to a fine crisp. Even long before then, it’ll warm up enough to raise our average temperature and cause a runaway greenhouse effect, boiling our oceans.

Happily, that’s a long time from now.

4. Death by Black Hole

Black holes are misunderstood. They don’t wander the galaxy looking for tasty snacks in the form of planets and stars; they turn around the Milky Way just like the hundreds of billions of other stars do. But it’s possible that one could wander too close to us. If it did, planetary paths would be disturbed, causing the Earth to drop into the sun or be thrown out into deep space.

Given that it could be trillions of years or more before even that happens, we don’t have to worry too much about black holes.

My advice? Go outside, look up, enjoy the sun, the moon, and the stars. They may be there forever as far as any one of us is concerned...and forever is a long, long time.

1.The underlined word “this” probably refers to ________.

A. getting wiped out by a dinosaur

B. an untimely death

C. a cosmic shooting gallery

D. 100 tons of material

2.Which of the following will cause the earth’s average temperature to go up dramatically?

A. The dying sun.B. The black hole.

C. The asteroid.D. The exploding star.

3.Which of the following statement is possible about black holes?

A. They wander the galaxy.

B. One of them wanders very close to the earth.

C. They turn around the galaxy.

D. They look for planets and stars.

4.While the author is introducing the ways the universe could wipe out humankind, he is ________ us.

A. warningB. comfortingC. entertainingD. ignoring

“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing (罵) is a sign of love.”

Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still ring true.

Today,it seems,Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to pre?college military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.

“Good education doesn't mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming,an entrepreneur (企業(yè)家) in Jinhua,East China's Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”

In August,Song sent his 17?year?old son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.

Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.

A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28. “All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families;some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.

Song's only son,Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.

Now,three months later,he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism,no matter how unreasonable.

“The training is hard but I know it is good for self?development of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character;they are not personal.”

But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.

But for those who stick with it,there is a reward for all the hard work.

1.From the second paragraph,we can know the old Chinese saying ________.

A.is out of date in modern times

B.is disagreed by rich parents

C.is still worth trusting

D.is deeply believed by better educated parents

2.The underlined sentence means that ________.

A.Song sent his only son to military school,so he feels lonely

B.Song is the only one who sends his child to military school

C.there are other people sending their children to military school besides Song

D.the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it

3.Song Siyu got some achievements in the military school except ________.

A.taking a bath in a short time

B.improving his character

C.taking unreasonable criticism

D.having his meal with his eyes closed

4.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.It's likely that more and more Chinese students will attend VFMA.

B.Most Chinese parents approve of educating their children by beating and cursing nowadays.

C.Song Siyu had no difficulty in adjusting to the life at VFMA.

D.Most Chinese students support the way of education at VFMA.

Just saw the superhero movie, Kick-Ass, and it raised an interesting question: just because we are not superhuman, can we lead a super-heroic life? I believe we can do it in some easy steps!

Activate(刺激) our super powers.

Superheroes are all good at different things. Some are really fast, some can see things others can’t, and some can move things with their mind. Also we all have special talents and passions. We just have to know what they are and develop them.

Try this. List several things you’re especially good at— we’ll say these are your core super powers. Next, write down what makes each of your core super powers and look for chances to use them and improve them.

Get a sidekick or two.

Superheroes are out there all day, fighting the good fight. And who’s there to help? Every superhero has teamed up with someone else to defeat some enemies they couldn’t deal with alone.

We need a support team: one or more who can be trusted and will help us when necessary. Our team members should bring different, constructive perspectives(觀點(diǎn)) and all kinds of super powers. But we must choose wisely.

Be brave and bold.

Does it take more courage to venture(冒險(xiǎn)) down a dark road or to face a life of no ventures at all? Both can be pretty scary. But we should be brave and bold just as some successful person said: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition(直覺).”

Live the code.

Superheroes die to protect others. They don’t cheat or lie or steal. They’re good role models, and they do the right things even when nobody is watching.

Though nobody’s perfect, yet we should learn from superheroes and struggle not to disobey the superhero code. Turn a friend down who trusts me? Of course I won’t.

1.One of the similarities between superheroes and human beings is that both of them ________.

A. are very clever and passionate

B. have their strong points

C. try to remove their own weak points

D. know how to be clever and bold

2.The underlined word “sidekick” in the passage refers to a person who ________.

A.tries to watch you all the time

B.is much cleverer than you

C.has super powers to support you

D.is ready to help you anytime

3.What is the superhero code?

A.Don’t be a bad person.

B.Be willing to lose everything for others.

C.Try to be a perfect person.

D.Satisfy the needs of the friend you trust.

4.What is the passage mostly about?

A.How we can become a superhero.

B.What a superhero should be like.

C.How we can live like a superhero.

D.Why we should learn from a superhero.

Simple Ways You Can Avoid Overeating During Holidays

The holidays are all about best purpose: early finish of shopping, mailing cards on time, and what is the most important one—surviving the year’s fat-filled feeding race. Sorry, we can’t help licking envelopes or shopping that is up to you! But we can arm you with these smart eating tips for indulging(大吃大喝) without weight gain.

__1.__ The worst thing you can do is stand around the table at a party and dip into the bowl. You will have no idea how much you are really eating unless you do put your choices on the plate.

Calm yourself. __2.__ When someone gets third or orders that second glass of wine, you can go along them naturally. Why do we eat more than we think? If you are surrounded by fast eaters, take a half glass of water between bites to slow down.

Reduce those portions. Choose the smallest plate as possible. __3.__ It has been tested out that whether it is popcorn or even spaghetti the bigger the plate, package or bowl is, the more you are likely to eat.

_4.__ Variety might be the best of life, but it is also a recipe for overeating. Researchers found that adults who were offered sandwiches with four different kinds of filling ate a second more than those who got only their favorite ones. So the advice is to pack together similar tastes.

Don’t talk with your mouth full. One of the best ways to keep from employing yourself at a big family dinner is great conversation. So as Mom used to say, before you start chatting first finish chewing. When you talk and eat at the same time, you are not really paying attention to either of them. __ 5.__

A. Control your choices.

B. Always pick up the special food.

C. You look pretty unpleasant as well.

D. Your eyes can trick the stomach.

E. Get away from the table.

F. Feel the taste of each bite.

G. Take your seat near the slowest eater at the table.
