I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be   36  Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, “What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d   37 ?” Just when I started to   38  that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women   39  at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll, I felt such a sense of   40  that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn’t   41 . Somebody had thought   42  of me to bring me a gift.
Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my   43    Christmas there special and memorable, I   44  remembered the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of   45  for as many children as I could possibly reach.
So I   46  a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤兒) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school suppliers,   47  with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were   48 . Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I   49  them that they couldn’t open their presents   50  every child had come forward. Finally the   51  they had been waiting for came as I called out, “One, two, three. Open your presents!” As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles   52  up the room. The   53  in the room was obvious, and   54    wasn’t just about toys. It was a feeling –the feeling I knew   55  that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody thought of me. I matter.

(2010?江蘇模擬)
I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.
I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.
So here’s what I wanted to tell you today:Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion, the bigger pay-check…
Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.
It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to existinstead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, and something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.
I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.
By telling them this:Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.

I was sleeping in my room when my bed started shaking and a loud noise was heard. I woke up and my mom was screaming my name. Next moment I was running along with my younger sister, mom and dad. Before I ran out of the door, I realized my elder sister hadn’t come out yet. So I screamed her name at the top of my voice. My mom said she had gone to her class. Then the four of us, along with many others, were running on the staircase. We lived on the seventh floor, so I thought we would not be able to make it and the building would fall before we managed to reach even the fourth floor. My dad’s head was injured by something falling down. I did try to put my hand over his head. When we reached the sixth floor, the building split into two. We had no way to get down.
The next thing I remember is silence. There were around 30 people on the staircase and none could react. Five minutes later, someone opened the door of the sixth-floor flat. We all went in. We were wondering how would get down. From the balcony of the sixth-floor flat, I saw people standing on the ground floor. All eyes were stuck on us. I could see my elder sister crying.
Our first hope of surviving came when a worker climbed a rope to where we were. That was the first time we thought maybe we could get down. Half an hour passed and we were still trapped. Finally RSS people arrived with ropes. They got people down one by one. My biggest worry was how my dad would get down. Finally after two and a half hours, we all got down.

"What’s in a name?”According to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, there is not too much.“That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. "But Shakespeare may have been wrong. In most cultures, names matter a great deal.
Americans choose names for their children with care. Parents usually think about the impression a name gives, not its meaning. Most Americans would consider a “Jennifer” more attractive than a“Bertha",for example. The last name,or,surname, must also be considered when choosing a first and middle name. A name like Lester Chester Hester would sound poetic, but odd. Parents would avoid names that remind them of people they don’t like. On the other hand, people might name their children after a respected elderly relative or even a famous person. The popularity of certain names can change with each new generation. Names that were once common, like Fanny or Elmer, sound old-fashioned today. But other names—like John and David,Mary and Sarah—have stood the test of time and continue to be favorites.
People in Ameica don’t always call their friends and relatives by their given names. Instead, they often use nicknames. Sometimes nicknames are short forms of a longer name. For instance,a girl named Elizabeth may be called Lisa,Beth or Betsy. As children grow up,they may decide for themselves which nickname they wish to be called.
Some people just go by the initials of their first and middle names, like B. J, or R. C. And of course, people may call their children or their sweethearts other special nicknames. Often they have a “sweet” flavor, like Honey or Sugar. What’s in a name? A world of significance. So if you’re choosing an English name for yourself, take care to choose a good one. A made—up name could sound strange to native English speakers. And a translation of your Chinese name may not make an appropriate name, either. But a good name can leave a positive and lasting impression.  As an American politician once said,“In real life, unlike in Shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears.”
小題1:What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.People change names in order to be popular with the new generanon.
B.Names will change by themselves in order to be popular.
C.Some names may no longer be popular among the new generation.
D.No names can stand the test of time.
小題2:When choosing names, you should stick to the following principles EXCEPT that
A.the impression a name gives is more important than its meaning
B.you can name after a well-known person
C.surname should be paid attention to
D.you can create a name that is special
小題3:The author will name a newly born baby girl________.
A.BerthaB.FannyC.YunyunD.Elizabeth
小題4:What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Names have great significance to Americans.
B.Names change when time goes by.
C.Chinese people should be careful when choosing their English names.

Anthony Horowitz was miserable as child. He was, as he put it, “not very bright” and couldn’t win the attention of his very wealthy parents, who preferred his “clever” older brother. At age 8, Horowitz was sent away to an abusive boarding school in his native England, even though he screamed and pleaded(懇求) with his parents year after year not to send him. “The thought was, It’ll be good for him,” he recalled.
It was not. Horowitz did badly in his studies, had few friends and was bullied (欺負) for five years. “My teachers couldn't have had a lower opinion of me,” he said. “I wasn't even smart enough to rebel . The one thing I remember from the very earliest age was this desire to write. When I was 10 years old, I remember asking my parents to get me a typewriter for my birthday because I wanted to be a writer.”
Now, at age of 55, Horowitz is one of the world's most successful children's book authors. His Alex Rider series has sold more than 5 million copies, and the eighth book featuring the young spy, Crocodile Tears, came out this month.
The Alex Rider books tell the adventures of 14-year-old Alex Rider, an agent for the British intelligence agency M16.
Horowitz said he doesn't try to write for kids; it just comes out that way. “I have a feeling it's to do with purity and simplicity. I give as little information as is necessary to describe the room, the character in the room, and get on with the action,” he said.
The style has also made Horowitz a successful writer of television shows for adults in Britain because, he says, writing books for kids is a lot like writing television for grown-ups: In both cases, it's all about entertaining people with a good story.
Now, Horowitz couldn't be happier with his life. He sums up his success: “…you can be anything you want to be if you just believe in yourself. I do believe it completely.”
小題1:In the boarding school, Horowitz’s teachers           .
A.often criticized himB.showed great concern for him
C.taught him how to write storiesD.thought little about his ability
小題2:Which of the following is true of Anthony Horowitz?
A.He was the beloved child of his family.
B.He benefited a lot from boarding school.
C.He emphasizes the plot rather than character in stories.
D.Although he is successful, he isn’t very happy.
小題3:What advice does Horowitz have for readers?
A.Confidence is the key to success.B.Hardship teaches valuable lessons.
C.Interest is the best teacher.D.Industry is the parent of success.
小題4:In which section can you most probably read the passage?
A.Campus TrendsB.Culture & Leisure
C.Our World D.Science Life
