A study conducted in the Svalbard Archipelago of;Norway showed the first recorded case of polar bears seeking out white-beaked dolphins(白喙斑紋海豚) for prey(獵物) . Warming waters have allowed the dolphins to travel north to an area they would normally avoid until summertime. “It is likely that new species are appearing in the diet of polar bears due to climate change because new species are finding their way north,” study author Jon Aars said.
Arctic waters have warmed at a rate twice that of southern waters, putting the ice-loving bears in trouble. Polar bears typically sit on large pieces of ice to hunt swimming seals, but without the platform of ice to sit on,the bears have to look elsewhere for food. Two ice-free winters attracted the dolphins into the Arctic region, where their food has also shown up thanks to warm water. But a sudden influx (匯集)of ice trapped the dolphins, making them easy prey for hungry plar bears.
The scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute first discovered this eating habit in April,2014 and documented another five cases in the following year. Most of the bears appeased well-fed,although one was visibly thin and found covering a dead dolphin with ice as a means to hide his food source from other animals —another strategy that scientists had not yet seen before.
It' s unlikely that there are enough dolphins to feed the large population of polar bears. And as the bears were only able to hunt the dolphins because of a sudden storm, their consumption could be a fluke(使幸) .
Polar bears living in Canada and Alaska have been found traveling north to live in the icy regions they need, but Svalbard is about as far north as it gets before the water becomes too deep to serve as a livable habitat, leaving the bears with nowhere else to go.
9. What does Jon Aars think is to blame for polar bears' eating dolphins?
A. Loss of habitat: B. No other prey.
C. Warmer climate. D. Shorter summertime.
10. What do we learn about today's polar bears from Paragraph 2 ?
A. They fmd it harder to hunt seals.
B. They have more food than before.
C. They face more competitors than before.
D. They are troubled by a sudden influx of ice.
11. It is very rare for a polar bear to.
A. appear well-fed
B. get nothing to eat
C. hide food from other animals
D. share food with other polar bears
12. After polar bears reach Svalbard,they .
A. get no dolphins to eat
B. cannot go any further northward
C. hardly want to go anywhere else
D. make it a comfortable livable habitat

The American Dream has been described as "a dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyoneThis dream became reality once in the United States, but are Americans today enjoying the standard of living that their parents and grandparents enjoyed in the post-war years?
After the Second World War,many Americans became richer and their living standards increased as the economy grew. From 1945 to 1973,incomes increased by about 3% per year. From the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s,incomes rose very slowly, but then they increased sharply for five years between 1995 and 2000. Overall, incomes have been rising by less and less each year and now the annual increase is almost nothing.
Job security and unemployment also play a role in the standard of living. Nowadays, factories and offices are closing,so jobs are less secure. Unemployment, too,is higher than it was in the past. The number of people without a job in the 1950s fell to around 2. 5%, but now this figure stands at around 9. 5%.
Another measure of the standard of living is the health of the population. Life expectancy is an important measurement of the health in a country. Life expectancy has increased from 68 years old in 1950 to 78 today, but the United States is now behind Germany and the United Kingdom (80) , France (81) and Japan (82) . One reason for this problem with life expectancy in the United States is obesity, because this has an effect on the general health of the population. In the United States,35% of adults are obese now, compared wilh 10% in 1950. This increase is due to the consumption of fast food.
Of course, most Americans own more things than in the post-war years such as TVs and phones. However, some economists would argue that the standard of living cannot be rising if people are becoming less healthy,or if they cannot afford to retire. It seems that although we think we have a better standard of living, this may not be the real picture.
9. According to the text, which of the following is a measurement of the health in a country?
A. Obesity rate. B. Life expectancy.
C. The food people eat. D. The exercise people do.
10. How does the author probably feel about the standard of living in America today?
A. Hopeful. B. Surprised.
C. Dissatisfied. D. Uninterested.
11. The author introduces American people's living standards mainly by.
A. listing figures and making comparisons
B. following the order of importance
C. following the order of space
D. giving definitions
12. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?
CP: Central Point P: Point

You've probably heard about the -dangers of smoking. The good news is that fewer teens smoke today than at any time since the 1990s. But here's the bad news. Every day, nearly 4,000 kids in the U.S. try a cigarette for the first time. And every day,1,000 kids become regular smokers. Almost all teen smokers plan to quit within five years. But more than 60 percent are still smoking 7 to 9 years later.
Most people hope every teen in the world stays away from cigarettes, but not the people who work for- tobacco companies. Before people knew that cigarettes were dangerous, tobacco companies openly marketed their products to teens. In the early 1900s,some cigarette packs included collectible baseball cards. In the 1940s and 1950s,tobacco advertisements often featured actors and actresses. That ended in 1964,when the U.S. government released the results of a major scientific study on the effects of smoking on health. New laws banned cigarette advertising on TV and radio.
Advertising isn't the only way tobacco companies have tried to market their products. Candy-flavor^
cigarettes were once common. They contained tone (有毒的) chemicals and were as dangerous and addictive as regular cigarettes. Studies showed that these products were especially popular among teen smokers. And many teens mistakenly believed that these sweet cigarettes were safer than unflavored cigarettes. In 2009,flavored cigarettes were banned in the U.S..
By now, maybe you,ve noticed a pattern: Each time new laws are passed to protect teens, tobacco companies come up with new methods. Many states have approved high taxes on cigarettes; and prices have been increased to reduce smoking. To deal with this, tobacco companies give discounts to convenience stores so they can charge less for cigarettes.
The fact is that tobacco companies need you to become addicted to a deadly habit. Without new smokers, they will eventually go out of business. But you can at least make sure of one thing: They won't get you.
