Jean-Michael Lourdis was a promising young pianist. But when the young man played, it seemed to him, as if his hands were iron. That night as he played, he felt as if it were the worst concert of his young life. The next day, in the newspapers, some of the comments were so unkind. The young musician was painful.
That day, as he sat in his hotel room in total despair(絕望), there came a knocking at his door. He had a visitor. The famous Finnish composer(作曲家) Jean Sibelius had come by to congratulate the young pianist on his performance. Jean-Michael asked how he thought of that and began to quote some of the newspaper critics. “ Hands of iron. No imagination. Little skill. No joy. Don't you hear what they say?” he asked.

That morning, I got the train as always. I was a publishing director and was looking forward to embracing a new day of work, as usual. I would always turn to the crossword(縱橫填字游戲), but that day it didn't     . I'd been doing it for 30-old years, but trying to read this one was like walking through syrup(糖漿):    slow and hard. I thought I must be tired.
I said to my assistant. The      colleague contacted my wife, Beth, and she drove me straight to hospital. There, confirmation came that I'd had a stroke in the part of my brain that communication. I was now in a condition that means it's difficult or   to receive and produce language. It was the only time I     .
I was back at home a week later, and my goal was to get better and      work in a couple of months. The way to   my language ability was rough. I'd look at simple pictures and try to describe them as my mind      round and round in the darkness, looking for words.
As the months passed, it became      that I wasn't going to be able to go back to my old job. For 25 years, I had      myself as a publisher. I was used to a busy day of meetings. I enjoyed colleagues and the      I'd had. I didn’t feel ready to say goodbye to my old self. There were times when I felt incredibly     .
In the darkest months, I devoted myself to     . I couldn't manage novels or newspapers,   I tried reading poetry, and found the shorter lines less overwhelming(勢不可擋的). My speech came back, and I learned how to read again, though much more slowly. I also learned the      to keep up. I allowed myself to slow down, and started to enjoy it.
,  I get rid of my old skin. I grieved(感到悲痛) the past, its passing and its absence, and started to     it. Now, 10 years later, I look after my grandson a day a week, and my relationship with my family is deeper than ever. If you'd asked me 15 years ago to      the importance of the things in my life I might have said work, but now I'm no longer a high-achieving publisher or someone who reads 10 books a week. I'm a      man, and if I read 10 books a year, that’s pretty good.

On the first day of college our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know.
I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you can!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”
“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We instantly became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk non-stop.

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease(疾病) called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (細菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精煉米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (維生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.

I was riding my special motorbike this past weekend and stopped at a convenience store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back, a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat. We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter. “Well, do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me?” I asked. He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this. He thought about it for a second and said, “OK, as long as I can follow you.”
He introduced me to Amy and he sat her on my back seat. Her father followed me for a few miles and she talked non-stop about what she wanted for Christmas.
As we came back to the convenience store, she said, “This ride is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life and didn’t know I could do this.” I told her about some of the other things I do (ski, travel the world by myself, etc.). As her father was taking her off my bike, she turned to him and said, “Oh Daddy, I’m going to be OK. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things, and I will too.” Her father turned away as a tear of joy rolled down his cheek. He hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. She often felt that her life was dull compared to other children. God answered my prayer just now. Now I pray that God will bless you for your gift to Amy today.” I believed what he said. Being kind and thoughtful to others, we can be an answer to prayer.

Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That's where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.
I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister.
When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she'd outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations.
We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from smiling so much. She showed me her wardrobe, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.
Paris had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.
小題1:The writer and Paris were similar in that     .

小題3:What did the writer learn from Paris?
A.How to make best use of her neighborhood.
B.How to dress and look fashionable.
C.How to become a good writer
D.How to make friends.
小題4:From the article, we can see that through her friendship with Paris, the writer     .

B.was able to fit in at her new school with Paris’ help
C.was not so awkward or shy as before
D.learned more about fashion herself
