Brazil is beautiful and more than just football
How much do you know about Brazil? You might think of football , samba (桑巴) and the Amazon. But there is a lot more to this country: its wonderful land, history and culture.
On September 7 , 1822 , Brazil won its independence (獨(dú)立) from Portugal. So that day is Brazil’s National Day.
It is the largest country in South America and has the second longest river in the world. It is called the Amazon. The river is 6, 440 kilometres long and runs through the world’s largest rainforest. The rainforest is home to between 800, 000 and 5 million kinds of plants and animals. But be careful when you swim because the biggest snake, the Anaconda (大水蟒), and the most terrible fish, the Piranha (水虎魚) , live there!
Brazilians love sports, especially football. Many great players were born in Brazil like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. Football is-played everywhere. It is so popular that schools and businesses close during their important matches !
The Brazilians also love dancing very much. The national dance is the samba. Samba is a very lively and fun dance. Every year in February or March, there is the Carnival (狂歡節(jié)) in Rio de Janeiro. This is a time for parades and partying ! People go out and dance in the streets Dancers dress up in colorful clothes and go through the streets on big cars called floats. Tens of thousands of people watch the dancing.
If you want to be part of the carnival, then find a chance to travel to Brazil!

New York’s streets were covered by people dressed in elephant costumes (服裝) and others waving antiwar posters with pictures of US President George W. Bush on them last week. But this was no carnival (狂歡節(jié)) – it was the Republican Party’s National Convention (共和黨全國(guó)大會(huì)), which attracted thousands of protestors (抗議者). It was the largest protest ever at a US political convention, with at least 120,000 people marching through Manhattan on August 29. They demanded that the US leave Iraq and a new president be chosen.
The Republicans say the opposition – Democrat Party (民主黨) encouraged the people on to the streets. They believe it is a democratic move to help win presidential election, to be held on November 2. The election is described as “the decisive battle between donkey and elephant”. The two animals are the symbols of the two major political parties in the US. The elephant represents (象征) the Republicans, whose candidate (侯選人), President George W. Bush, is trying to defeat the donkey to win his second them. The donkey represents the democrats, whose candidate, John Kerry, is trying to kick the elephant out of the White House.
Republicans think the elephant is powerful and clever, but the Democrats argue it is stupid and conservative (守舊的). In return, the Republicans regard the donkey as stubborn (倔強(qiáng)的) and silly but the Democrats say it is humble, plain, smart and courageous.
The Republicans have been sending emails to Bush supporters and journalists with the heading, “An Elephant Never Forgets”, said party spokeswoman Heather Layman. Elephants are known for their long memories. The emails suggest that Bush will keep his promises, while Kerry will not stick to his words.
It is interesting that both symbols were created by a single person, Thomas Nast, a famous political cartoonist of the late 19th century. During the election in 1874, Nast drew a cartoon, in which a donkey in a lion’s skin frightened an elephant marked “Republican”.
What does “kick the elephant out of the White House” mean?
A. Drive the animal out of the White House. B. Drive President Bush out of power.
C. Keep the elephant out of the White House. D. Insist on Bush’s being elected.
In the eyes of the Republicans, the donkey is considered as .
A. clever B. foolish C. polite D. brave
Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The same artist created the two symbols.
B. The emails suggest Kerry will not carry out his promises.
C. “An Elephant Never Forgets” means that an elephant has a good memory.
D. John Kerry is a Democrat.

Carnival(狂歡節(jié)) does not take place only in Louisiana. There are many celebrations around the world.
In Brazil, the celebration is supposed to go on from the Saturday before Mardi Gras (大齋節(jié)前的最后一天)to Mardi Gras Day, but in some Brazilian cities the celebration can last seven or eight days. Just like New Orleans, not many important things are decided in Brazil from New Year's Day to Mardi Gras Day because everyone is preparing for or celebrating carnival. Most Brazilian parades have a subject, which could be political or historical. The parades had to have a subject related to Brazil until 1996. Some cities in Brazil do not have a street carnival, but they might have an indoor party.
Bolivia has carnival parades for children and then more parades for adults. The children dress up in costumes and march in the streets. The adults make traditional dance groups and dance in the streets. But the main part of Bolivia's carnival is getting wet. Almost everyone gets wet from water balloons and water buckets. In Oruru, Bolivia, their carnival is held in the last ten days of the carnival season. People there join in dancing, but their main carnival event is a ceremonial parade that lasts for twenty hours and parades for four kilometers. Over 20,000 dancers are involved as well as 10,000 musicians. This parade attracts at least 400,000 people.
The carnival in Venice, Italy is often regarded as the most carefully prepared carnival and lasts ten days before Lent (大齋節(jié)). Many events are held in the canals including shows, concerts, dances and water processions(隊(duì)列). The official ending to the celebration is the party held in St. Mark's Square.

Must-Read about Notting Hill Carnival(狂歡節(jié))
Route
The carnival procession itself begins at 9am on both Sunday and Monday. It starts on Great Western Road, winding its way along Chepstow Road, then on to Westbourne Grove, and then down Ladbroke Grove. See our Notting Hill Carnival map for the full route.
While extra services will be in operation, no buses will enter the Carnival area from first thing Sunday morning until the first service on Tuesday morning. On both days bus services begin from Notting Hill Gate in the south and from Harrow Rd (close to Elgin Avenue) in the north.
Bike
Last year the nearest bike-parking stations – Chepstow Villas and Pembridge Road – were removed for Carnival, so don’t rely on being able to park your bike nearby this year.
Safety
Avoid carrying expensive items, such as jewellery and digital cameras. Take a bag with a secure zip to keep your more valuable possessions in and avoid putting your valuables in your back pocket.
Do tell police if you see an incident. Officers will be stationed throughout the Carnival area. Don’t try to walk against the flow of the crowd, as you won’t get far. Drink plenty of water on the day too, especially if the sun makes an appearance.
Children
Children’s Day on Sunday is recommended for families as the smaller crowds and kid-friendly floats(游行花車) create a fun atmosphere. Arrange meeting points in case you become separated. The smaller the buggy(嬰兒車), the better. Ear defenders may be necessary for very young children.
1.Visitors are warned not to bike to the Carnival because _________.
A. there are an increasing number of bike thefts there
B. there are no bike-parking stations nearby
C. roads to the Carnival area are closed to bikes
D. they will be charged with extra parking fees
2.Visitors had better_________.
A. wear trousers without back pockets
B. bring plenty of beer with them
C. leave their valuables in the hotel
D. walk along the flow of the crowd
3.People who go to the carnival with children are advised_________.
A. to be there on Sunday
B. to let their children go wherever they like
